For dark beer drinkers - Tooheys Old is $49 a carton and Monteiths Black is $14 for 6, both for DM members. Both are decent.

    • Monteiths is brilliant for that price, or you could have a not-really craft but good just the same from Lion, White rabbit, for $20 for 6 @ members price.

    • Drinking Monteiths Black now. A favourite.
Good price. Bought a few cases from Catch for $45 each delivered (after $20 off with Latitude) a month back.

  • I have never try Guinness. How does it taste compare to Kilkenny which I do like very much.

    • +3

Kilkenny is creamier and for most I would say easier to drink. But if you like Kilkenny then def worth giving the Guinness a good attempt. You'll prefer in the long run. Just don't expect to really like your first one.

  • Hmm - as a member, the offer is:

    $59.00 per case

    $68.95 per case of 24

    $22.49 per pack of 6

    $5.89 per can (in store)

    The bottles are cheaper:

    $39.90 per case of 24

    $10.90 per pack of 6

    • That’s odd - I’m in Victoria and as a member the offer is $56 per case of 24.

      • There's a 10 cent deposit in S.A. 6 x 10 must = 300 in a Taylor field…

Bottles are brewed locally under licence I believe. The cans are imported and have a widget, so they pour into a glass with a creamy head, like from the tap.

      • No - some may have been, but the six boxes I've bought in the last week are all Dublin bottled with a sticky Australian standard information label over the N.Z. 'brewed by … imported by…" blurb on the side

I've a sneaking suspicion we may be getting stock held up when a large ship tried turning in a canal…

The story I got from a mate at Coles Liquor was that due to the pandemic, the pubs were mostly shut in Europe/UK/Ireland, so most of the cans were kept for EU/UK home consumption. Some of the bottles Woolies Liquor were able to score as they're not so popular up Nth.

But I like your suggestion of the canal issue…. I'll have to ask.

    • bottles = 330ml

      • +1

Yep, but 440/330 <> 2/1, whereas 22.49/10.9 gets pretty close.. Less than half price for 3/4 the amount is a better bargain. You don't get a widget to rattle tho.

The bottles are not as thick and creamy though, I’d rather pay the extra at this price

          • @jjno41: There is that, however I find the extra nitrogen masks the flavour, but there are meals that are better with the canned Guiness/Killkenny smoothness.

  • Nice one - I've been waiting for this for a while so will definitely stock up on a few slabs

A friend recently sent me a recipe for a chocolate guinness cake which I might attempt as well https://www.nigella.com/recipes/chocolate-guinness-cake
