Mobile Phone for the elderly

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a mobile phone for the elderly. Shes approx 85 years old and pretty tech illiterate. Need something with solid battery life. Not sure a smartphone is the way to go.

Does anyone have suggestions or experiences that could help me.

Thanks

flip phone is nice, i know my parents preferred that so it was easier to hang up and usually dont butt dial

also buttons, they preferred that to being on the screen

    expensive but someting like this

    • Thanks for the suggestion.

Cost isn't really a huge factor.

Maybe take her into a shop to have a look at some. Or see how she goes using your phone with some instruction as a trial. There’s actually a fair bit of research to show that older people without or with mild cognitive impairment can learn to use a smart phone at that this has benefits for social inclusion and function. iPhones are pretty easy to learn to use. Also libraries and community centres do courses to help older people learn to use a smartphone.

    nokia 2720 flip phone?

    • +1 I managed to get one of these for $80 for mum. She has been managing a lot better with physical buttons and some contacts added to speed dial.

Do they need a smart phone in the first place?

What is the reason for getting this phone? Phone calls and text messages or using apps etc?

Something simple, like a Samsung A3x serious and then enable the simple interface on it. Which will limit you to a handful of apps etc.

You can also hide apps/lock the homescreen layout etc.

Then install something like anydesk so you can remote control the phone to provide help!

  • Have no idea of quality or battery life but looks looks pretty simple.

  • You need to specify exactly what functions are required other than talk and text?
i..e. Do people send them photos?
What phone are they currently using?

    • Just the basic call functions.

      Text would be beyond her.

She isbt using anything at the moment

    Sms/call, dumb phone.

    Internet, get a pad.

Smartphones are only for tech users. Waste of money to force it on non tech users.

  • Try KISA phone, sits on charging cradle, simple, basic, buttons, supposedly made in Australia.
    Worth a look.

What is she going to use the phone for? Calling only? If calling from home only, perhaps a landline would suits her better.

My 70+ years old dad has been constantly on his phone now, watching youtube, video calling with whatsapp and msging his friends in FB. I don't think a smart phone is hard to use for elderly people, they just need some guidance and assurance at the beginning. Also do not have any financial related thing connected to the phone, like email, banking, etc. for security. I just created a gmail account specifically to use for that phone and nothing else.

    "Her" age is irrelevant.
What are important details for responders to consider are:
    - What, if any, mobile is currently being used?
    - What will the phone be used for?
    - Is "she" quick to learn new things?
    - Does "she" have any impairments that may impact on phone choice / use? (visual, hearing, reading, dyslexia, etc.)

  • I am looking for a simple smart phone with few frills. I am 82 years old. Main uses are telephone calls, SMS, Gmail, and a camera for use on QR recognition when shopping. Maybe some basic apps like weather, news, QR etc and a few others. I can handle touch screen OK, as I mainly use a stylus.
    Any suggestions?

  • Thanks. I will check out these apps.

  • I am in the same boat and need to buy something for my technophobe mum who is 79. Can youp lease let me know what you ended up buying and whether you are happy with your decision. Mum needs text messages, phone, calls, photos, whatsapp and scanning in to venues for Covid. thanks
