      • Not able to find any good grey import deals which trumps this deal. The only ones which are kind of worth considering from grey import are:

        X4 (550D) Body Only - $488
        X5 (600D) Body + 18-55 IS Lens - $592
        * Price shown above includes postage - actually the postage portion is around ~$100.

So, if you want 550D + twin IS lens kit, this DSE deal is hard to beat.

        • X5 (600D) Body + 18-55 IS Lens - $592??
Could you pls post the link? Sounds a better deal

        • +2

Note: you need to be willing to accept X5 (if you want the 600D branding - it will cost more). Also, make sure you have a friend who can read Japanese or Chinese to help you set the language to English initially.

          http://cameraparadise.com/Canon-EOS-600D-Digital-Camera-Kit-…

          • Get the $10 off voucher from the site and use it
          • I factored in postage AND the voucher discount when quoting the price.
          • There is an $11 paypal surcharge - also factored in when quoting the price.
          • From forum, they will call you to confirm order apparently. So put in a number they can reach you.

The only reason I did not quote the 600D body only deal is because it is only $30 cheaper.

        • WOW $592
          Door-to-door warrant.
I am tempted to buy from them

        • My initial reading up on the Mack warranty suggests the standard ones aren't valid until the end of the manufacturer's warranty - that only the Diamond one applies from the date of purchase.

Is that correct? Maybe it plays out differently in practice, but the letter of it seems to suggest some risk of a coverage gap.

EDIT: sorry - this was meant to be in response to spawnpoint's post.

        • You can buy from here: http://www.d-d-electronics.com.sg/cart.php?suggest=4f2a25bbe…

If you miss out its $742 + ~$30p+h

      • @Jabba The warranty card I got with mine states warranty starts 30 days after purchase. I'll upload the card for you later to see.

        • No need - I believe you. Just curious which warranty it is exactly.

  • Spewing - I bought this same deal from Kogan 3 days ago for $100 more… Oh well.

  • Anyone know how this 550D compares to the older 10D? A worthy upgrade?

    • I did that exact upgrade. Definitely worth it. You'll get a lot better performance in every way, faster to to use and operate. The extra megapixels don't hurt either, or the Full HD video. Only thing you lose in the process is the two scroll wheels to adjust things like time and aperture. With 10D you have the big wheel at the back and the small one on top, one adjusting time, the other aperture. With 550D you only have that one top wheel and to adjust other things you'll have to press a separate button at the same time. Annoying, but you'll get used to it.

      • Cheers thanks for that dude, much appreciated. Yeh I figure the 10D is getting on 10 years old so despite it being more of a semi-pro camera (better construction etc..), the 550D would still produce better images.

  • Bought this about 3 years ago for $1150 from DWI with a single lens. Cant believe how cheap it is now.

so does the above indicate its the average price these days and not really that special?

    • Those prices are mostly for 1 lens or in some cases, no lens at all. Also, in many cases, it excludes freight (esp for online stores)

      • yeah good eye, bargain confirmed again…

  • Would it be wayyy better than the Canon 500D I have?

    • It's better but not wayyy better. :)

  • How much would delivery cost?

Could we buy online and collect from a store?

I don't normally buy anything online!

    • online only…free delivery

  • will any other stores will do price match for this ? Like the HN or TGG ?

    • doubt it…its a 1 hour sale between 7-8….you would need to be at the store between 7-8 for the guy to look it up and compare?

      also its online only
generally i thought price match is only with the closest store

    • tried to get a price match at jb on warrigal, no luck. But i got what i went there for - physically tried the camera out.

  • Hmmm I'm not sure if I want to buy it or not. I've always wanted a DLSR, but I don't want to spend much money. And these don't come with an inbuilt flash? How much extra is a flash?

    • +2

If you don't want to spend much money a DSLR is not for you! More seriously, there are some very good cameras around now that are not SLRs.

    • great camera to learn on

    • It does come with an inbuilt, pop-up flash.

      • Oh thank you! I didn't realise it did!

I've got a Canon ixus at home, which I find is a great little P&S camera. The girlfriend wants a DSLR though, and it's her 21st so I was looking at the 550D for her but didn't want to then go and have to spend hundreds extra on other accessories :)

        • It comes with a replaceable, rechargable battery, charger and enough lenses to keep her going for quite a while. All you will need is a proper camera bag, that's all.

    • -4

If you want to use the inbuilt flash then an SLR is wasted with you.

  • first slr for me. will this camera last a while?

    • +7

Yeah absolutely. Probably until September, maybe even October.

      • lol cheers. but seriously.

    • Yes, you will get probably years out of it, until you want more after realising how great SLR's are, after which you will then become poor.

      • Cameras will die (from dropping, drowning, decaying) before becoming obsolete.

Interesting in CameraParadise for 600D (Kiss X5):
    1) Body and 18-135 lens bundle:
Canon EOS 600D Digital Camera Kit 18-135mm IS Lens Kiss x5
    $851.59

    2) If I buy body and lens separately:
Canon EOS 600D Body Digital Camera Kiss x5 T3I English only
    $459.24
    Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lenses
    $299.36

    It comes $100 cheaper.

    • You missed the postage charges. Add them in and the difference will reduce (or might swing the other way).

  • -1

the thing is I reckon DSE will get too much traffic and noone can buy one.

    its still $1,296 atm

I can't even login their site is broken

    • must be just u then. i have no problems

      • Try logging in. Not just view the page

watch what happens tonight. it will get bombed out

        • logged in perfectly. even viewed the 550d page after logging in

        • logged in viewing the page just fine

price is still 1296 because its a 1 hour sale? so it will change when its time

  • +5

hopefully this DickSmith "super hour" deal isn't hosted on the Catch Of The Day servers

  • Wow, it is really good to see the competition is heating up in this arena. First 1100D by HN and now 550D by DSE, both are very good deals on their own.

    • +9

Guess all your money goes on weed..

      • +2

        hahahahah good call

        • Put his comment to music and you have a hit like some of 60s music.

    • I also subscribe to this theory and do not like taking photos, I do find it particularly frustrating some times when people on holiday are more interested in their camera than anything else. Having said that, whatever makes you happy.

      • +3

I'm guessing none of you guys have kids? I take lots of photos of the kids as they grow up :)

        • +1

This is fine, but some people seem more interested in the camera and photos than the kids themselves (not saying this is you).

        • +1

          Like Borat?

        • +1

Can I just recommend this camera for taking pictures of your own kids, not other peoples' (that's creepy)

      • All things in balance. Some photos for memories or to share with friends/family back home is nice.

Bad if people are taking in new sights view the view finder, but I think debonair's view that you must not take a photo unless for professional reasons is just as messed up.

        • +1

Reminds me of Leunigs cartoon of the guy watching the sunset on his tv when outside the window………….

  • +1

I will vote for the deal but buyers should think of a few things first before they buy it:

1)New 650D is expected to be released in Feb with improved performance, new image processor, higher pixels, potential touch screen???. This will be a better camera if you can wait.
    http://www.canonrumors.com/category/photography/canon-650d/

    2)Do you need twin lens?
A lot of people use their cameras to shoot portrait or landscape. Most of the time, you only need a 18-55mm not the 55-250mm. Of course You can sell it on ebay for about 150 to 200 dollars or sell both for about 200 to 250 dollars. That gives you a body cost about 450-500. On par with grey imports.

So if you can’t wait then get it. If you can wait, then wait for 650D.

    • +13

And the price will be much more than this. You can never catch up. for the moment this deal is best. Bang for buck

    • +2

18-55 IS goes for around $120
55-250 IS goes for around $250

So you could get some decent return on them if you wanted to upgrade. But for a starter/amateur, they are more than sufficient. Having a better lens doesn't automatically make your pics better. Just like buying a 650D won't make your pics any better.

Buy the best deal you can afford right now. Or simply never ever buy a camera, or a phone, or a car, or a TV etc because there's always a new model coming down the track with more features and gimmicks.

This is what I have been trying to say

  • Does DSE deliver using Australia Post, or via a Courier?

    • I got a Dick Smith package from Australian Air Express.

      • I got the same with tracking number

  • Does anyone have any opinions on the EOS 550D Premium kit with the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_18-200_3p5-5p6_is_…)?

It's a lot more dearer, as the lens itself costs around $600.

    • Do you need this type of lens? Don't but if it's not suitable for your photography purposes. If you start buying good lenses, you'll be broke within a few months.

    • I originally bought the camera with the twin lens kit but before going overseas, I purchased the 18-200 lens. I must admit it was great to have as a travel lens given its versatility. It wont be as good as other/prime lenses, but the quality is still very good, given its cost. You may also want to look into sigma or tamron lenses.

    • A lot heavier too (the lens)! Mainly used the 18-55mm lens when travelling

    • FWIW: My experience with this kind of lens (had the Nikon equivalent before) is that it is great for travel and convenience, at the cost of quality.

I'm starting to prefer to go other end of spectrum, carry 2-3 small primes with you to cover a range of lengths. A bit more cumbersome, and you may miss 'the shot' changing lenses depending on the environment, but will have ability to get much better shots, particularly in low light or where you want a shallow depth of field.

      • It also boils down to your style of photography. For me I travel only with the 16-35 f2.8II and the 50 1.2 with a 5d. The rest of the Ls stay at home and i don't feel any loss.

BTW. If you say bringing primes to reduce weight, any quality prime is heavy. Take the 85 1.2L as an example it's a small beast. The 50 1.2L is the lightest amongst everything at about 500+g. If i were to take 3 of my primes, 35 1.4, 85 1.2, 135 f2. That alone will be 2+KG just for lenses. Not to mention body.

  • Let's hope their servers don't fail under the load…

Does anyone have recommendations for SD cards for this camera? With HD video I guess a class 10 card would be on the safe side. Any great specials anywhere right now? (the one on mymemory is sold out now).

    • I have used both class 6 and 10 cards to capture video with no dramas. I think mine were sandisk ones. I suggest not using micro-SD cards with an SD adapter, regardless of what class it claims it is.

Your choice will also depend on the type of photos you take, ie if you take raw, the filesize will be massive, so higher speed cards will offer better performance.

      • Why the warning about micro-SD? Have you had some where the advertised speed was not reached or are there other issues?

    • I think class 6 is the minimum for HD video. All mine are class 10 Sandisks from OzB deals and they all work great (although I very rarely use the video function).

    • The BIG question is how many can actually grab the camera at this price within only one hour, assuming everyone wants it same time and server gets crashed, eventually no-one buys it successfully. If this does happen, it is a bit like a joke.

  • +1

Has ay one else noticed that if you click on the 'buy me now' link on the DSE front page it is bringing up the NON - I S twin lens kit!

This could make for a lot of problems, I know the description on the home page say IS kit but on the linked page the item number XG2501WEB doesnt mention IS at all ! - even in the specs it isnt mentioned. mmmmmmmm is Dick doing the dirty ?

    • It doesn't mention IS in the description, but have a look at the pictures. The lenses clearly have "IS" / "Image Stabilizer" on them. That's enough to claim false advertising if the ones you receive don't have IS.

      • Agreed, and on the main page it advertises the IS kit for that price.

I kept screen shots of everything.

  • Wow, didn't expect so many people have voted for this deal even before it start. Looks like there will be a lot of people going to miss out as it will be sold out quickly. Then there will be lots of people coming back here complainig and whinging. I think I will hold on to my old trusty 400D.

    • Yes, however the ebay one only has one lens. This DS one has two lenses, and the second 55-250mm lens can be sold for $200-$300 alone.

      • This one is also Australian stock. Up to the individual I guess as to how much that is worth, but it's certainly worth something to some people.

    • kogan is singles lens, dicky is dubs

  • A great price for local stock. I am also looking at entering into the world of SLR with my first buy. Done a lot of research and had zeroed in on the 550D/600D, but then when I went into a shop and tried them out they did not fit well in my hands(maybe I have extra large hands) and the 60D felt like it was tailor made to suit my hands. Hence my dilemma is still not over. I am considering paying the extra just for the way it felt in my hands. Features wise I did not find any that were really worth the extra for the 60D over the 550D/600D.

My suggestion is to get a feel for the camera you decide on before you buy. This would not be applicable if you are trying get one from this deal due to the time factor :)

HELp… Could someone please tell me this is a waste of money otherwise im going to buy it just coz it's a great deal!!!
What's the view on how good it is for macro??

    • +2

OZ bargain is not a real bargain place. People waste more money just for some bargains which they do not really need.

      • Amen to that! I still love it though.

      • it's more justifying a purchase than buying unneeded stuff

  • Are people talking this camera down in a way to scare off the hoards lol

Even I want a go of trying to get this as its a bargain from an Aussie shop, home delivered too for free.

  • its $4 more here if you miss out.. if you can look past the $99 shipping :)
