Nice find but hema lost me as a costumer several years ago. I would trust them to even keep their own devices running smoothly.

    • Poor customer service. Before item became faulty. Made several calls on troubleshooting. Met with uninterested service

    • My last comment should have read wouldn't trust them

Agree with feisty, Hema has gone downhill for years now, wouldn't touch this navigator also because it is not very good.

I would never buy this device even if it was $1.. They literally explode- Hema takes no responsibility for the warranty. Crappy plastic design. Get a Garmin overlander.

    • Agree. Had 1. Split into 3 pieces. No responsibility. Poor customer service

    • Ahh cheers for the feedback here everyone.

Why don't people just use a mobile phone with offline maps?

Seems like a lot of money for something that was more suited to the early 2000s

    • Mobile phones aren't really big enough to display enough useful information. Plus Google maps offers about 5% of the information a good topographic map does.
Dedicated gps units are good for getting you from A to B but not much else.
I consider myself lucky to have several early tab s tablets running hema Explorer that I have never updated. Either the app of the operating system. They are all rock solid and have full functionality pre the period when hema nobbled their apps and then tried to sell you back the functions they took off you. I feel for those with newer tablets running hema's current products

      • Fair enough, I guess there's more to a GPS then basic coordinates

    • A lot of these 4WD/off-road standalone GPS have 4WD/off-road tracks and camping sites which many standard GPS apps don’t have as the latter primarily focus on unsealed roads.

  • Now I am not an experienced overlander but when I was looking for a off-road gps, someone suggested me Newtracs and maps.me apps. I found them to be adequate in my limited experience

  • I tried to use a Hema HX navigator. The HX-1 was temperamental and I sold it quick.

Now I use a Garmin RV770 (bought on special for $225) from JAS. The Garmin works a lot better - the firmware can be "adjusted" so it will load almost any maps.
I still have Hema maps and waypoints loaded (both 72K:1 and 150K:1) also Aus topo v6, Marine Coastal maps and city navigator.

It also maps APRS locations as waypoints from my Yaesu FTM400 and it has a wireless reverse camera and traffic information receiver.

  • If online/your local SCA doesn't have it, be sure to price match this at your local BCF or call the 1300 number on the website to order online price match :)

Tip: I am BCF associated, not SCA. OzB made me tick the box.

  • Any of the offroad junkies would like to have a half a.. device to get lost easily? No thank you!

  • Better than VMS?

A negative to this device is that it only has 8gb internal memory (from memory). You need to cache your maps for offline use, so for instance, you wouldn't be able to load the whole of Victoria on there. Maybe the high country and that's about it.. The memory card slot is only used for photos.

On a side note, if anyone is of assistance in enabling the developers menu on this hit me up? I can get to the login prompt but whats the password whistles..
