In today's Daily Telegraph. Says it's available in-store. Minimum commitment is $240 and phone locked to Vodaphone network. Plan includes $50 talk/text, unlimited talk & text to Crazy John's (standard national only) and 100 MB.

Expiry date is made up as I couldn't find a date in the ad.
Looks like a good deal to me, but I'll leave it to more expert ozbargainers to inform us otherwise.

dont they give u a $50 visa as well??

    • +7

make sure you ask for it - I signed up recently (in store) and it went something like this:

rep: thanks for signing up - goodbye!
me: about the visa gift card - do you get it in the mail or something?
rep: oh! (feigned surprise) - you would actually like the gift card?
      me: uh…yeah
rep: let me go and find one for you

      dodgy as hell…

      • when you look on the website they say the visa gift card is for online signups only, so you did well to get it.

        • +1

the adds in the shop clearly say it's part of the deal - so not sure why they say online only

      • +6

They probably hope u dont ask, so that they can pocket it in themselves at the end of the day.

        • +1

That is closer to the slimy truth..

        • +1

that's certainly what it felt like

  • +3

If you use more than $50 worth of calls on this plan you are seriously going to jack yourself.

    • +4

      I checked call rates online:
calls per minute 99cents, flag fall 40cents, sms 28cents

  • does anyone have a comment re the phones? I was looking at a smart phone and wondered which was better, the LG or Acatel.

    • +4

You need to be careful with this plan as it is so easy to go over on this plan.

Assume you make 1 phone call per day for 1 minute

      (0.99 + .40) * 30 = $41.70

Assume you make 1 phone call per day for 1 minute and 1 sec

      (0.99 + .40)*30 + (0.99 *30) = $71.40

Now your phone bill is $31.40 instead of $10.

If you can spend more you might as well go with the virgin deal as it's better value, much better phone and better provider.

      • i agree that crazy john seems to be all about 'catching people out'

offer a nice looking monthly but hit them with a nasty bill if you're dumb enough to actually use their service

        • If you signed up with "anyone" else you would be better off.

      • MOST low-cost postpaid plans these days are a scam that relies on you going over quota to make big profits.

They still have flat-chat with 10c/min rate, but no "free" phone to suck you in.

    • which was better, the LG or Acatel

Spend some time researching… there are a heap of super phones out there and just as many opinions on what is good and what is not.
The final choice is yours and the wrong choice is easily made.
Check out the features in the super phones and figure out which ones you need then start reading from there.
I like the LG E900 Windows phone after having a couple of android phones. Others would recommend different… its up to you. Go to a telstra shop and you can play with them live.

  • Not sure about the other phones , but for the Optimus, you can easily get that <$100, go on the liveconnected $5 plan and still be in front (with $100+$100 talk/text) +100mb over 24 months ($5x24=120) .

    …plus, no contract.
    …plus, not vodafail
…plus, call rates (slightly, but not much) better

    • But phone would be locked so how can you do that?

      • Or you can just get an unlock code off ebay for a couple bux.
EDIT: or even if its locked to Virgin, it'll still work with liveconnected

        • virgin locked phones don't usually work with any non virgin sim including optus and resellers.

        • My P500 virgin locked worked on L.C

  • these have been going for a while, they've just added the $50 visa

obviously the nokia is a pile of garbage and the other two are just basic Androids

and of course, if you actually use the plan at all expect the bill to skyrocket

"you must be crazy <insert name here>" to take up this offer

  • My wife has the Nokia, and she loves it. You can even get it syncing with OSX for calendar sync over bluetooth

You can even get it syncing with OSX for calendar sync over bluetooth

Funny how a $50 Nokia can do that, but an iPhone cannot. :)

      • +5

You can with an iPhone. All you need to do is buy an app from the appstore. You can buy an app to change your ringtone as well, alarm ringtone and to download files.

It's funny how Apple can charge people to do simple tasks that they have previously done for free in the past.

That's what they mean when they say Apple has revolutionised the mobile phone industry.
