Behringer XM8500 Ultravoice Dynamic Cardioid Vocal Mic $29 Delivered @ DJ City

210

Probably the best bang for your buck microphone out there. I bought it last year for $35 and even then it was a bargain, so at this price it's incredible value.

Note: Needs a pre amp and other accessories like the mic arm, xlr cable and preferably a pop filter, this is just the microphone, carrying case and mic clip/stand adapter

Worth upgrading to the UMC202HD so you can grab 24-bit audio, and that's regularly on Amazon for $100ish via the UK store.

In total, at $125ish total via Amazon, this smashes everything else in the price bracket, at least before you start messing around with some ChiFi mics (though they are much more rare than the IEM/headphone space).

        • I guess it depends on what you're using it for. For youtubing or streaming, you'd be dealing with a lot of compression so I'd imagine 24bit won't matter as much

@Julius: Twitch goes up to 320kbit for audio these days, and I'm sure it happily supports 24-bit under that, which is basically a necessity between comms & game sounds.

I'd imagine YouTube scales much higher to pair with VP9, as well as YT music.

            • @jasswolf: How would this mic compare to the SM58?

              • @Julius: In terms of overall versatility this can pale to the SM58 - which it is clearly a replica of - but for male spoken word you wouldn't discern much difference in terms of detail, just the tuning on the Shure is a bit more neutral.

      • I have this one. Do you think that will work with this mic?

  • Great microphone. $28 on amazon.com.au

    • Need to spend more than 50 to get free shipping with prime

    • Regularly $20-$25 via the Amazon UK store on there.

  • What is a recommended desktop stand for this?
(tripod vs scissor arm, shock-mount or standard? Dead-cat type filter, or pop-screen?) Any kits you would recommend?

How does it compare to the Neewer kit (with mic, stand, filter and power)

Also, $30 on DJ City eBay store with PLUSF5 too.

This mic absolutely thrashes everything up to $150, but it also needs an interface. I'd imagine it's still highly competitive with a USB-to-XLR cable right up to about $120. Keep in mind this is a stage mic, so it's quite light/small compared to condensere mics, so any bad arm or even a desk stand will be fine.

The Neweer mic is a scratchy mess by comparison.

      • I am looking for a new mic for better voice during video conferences. I've tried a bunch of headsets (wired with a mic-boom, as well Bluetooth with noise-cancelling (fancy mic array?)) and never really been that impressed.

I'm currently using a Zoom H5 unit (with default mic capsule) as a USB audio interface, and it is great, albeit a little clunky to have sitting on my desk with a bunch of cables running in and out of it.

The Behringer would plug in nicely with the H5 (does it come with an XLR-XLR cable?), but I would be left with the same clunky set up.
I really need to have some kind of desktop stand.

        • No cable, but you should be able to get a pretty decent one on eBay, or a basic one on Amazon. I'd recommend these guys, but it's obviously not studio grade gear if you upgrade your mic over time.

It comes with a clip that screws into 3/8" setup, so it's really just a case of if you want a boom arm for it, or a desk stand.

An alternative if you still want the overall condenser sound for spoken word is the Mackie EM-91C via Amazon US with Prime. The blow of the extra $70 is offset by the fact that it comes with a cable, but no shock mount. It's a dark sound, but the mids are beautiful for the price.

        • Don't these have to be too in your face for video?
It's trendy for youtubers, but in business conference a big mic in shot is an odd look.

          • @joelmuzz: Ah, didn't know this - Was hoping to have a small desktop stand with the mic just in-front and below my raised monitor and out of the webcam view.

Definitely do not want to have it up to my mouth during calls

  • If I buy an XLR to 1/4 (guitar) Cable, I can plug this straight into an amp without need for a preamp unit right?

    • +1

Do you mean something like a guitar combo amp? Yeah, that would work because combo amps have a pre-amp and power-amp section

      • +1

        Yep! Thanks

  • Can you use this on karaoke?

Any suggestions for budget / best wireless mic (2 sets)?
