To those who raised concerns about the capacity of the 20000mAh power bank, thank you. The battery inside is infact 2 batteries, two 10000mAh li-poly cells joined together and packed inside of the case.

This is standard practice in high capacity li-poly batteries. In li-ion batteries you will find rows of 18650 cells lined together and that would result in the power bank being a lot bigger.

The other part to consider (and again let me stress that this is normal for power banks) is that the real capacity is different to the rated capacity. To put it very simply a power bank is rated at 3.7V and USB for the phone is rated at 5V. So to determine the real capacity for how much juice it's going to provide the phone you need to do the following conversion: 3.7V x Advertised mAh / 5.

So 3.7 x 20000 / 5 = 14800mAh. If your phone battery is 2000mAh, then a 20000mAh (14800mAh) power bank will get you up to 7.4 full recharges. There's also the efficiency of the PCB and battery cells that contribute to how much your device will get too.

Further to my comment this image actually shows you the battery cells inside the power bank and as you can see there are 2 batteries connected in parallel.

There is also this snippet from SGS who also provide their services in Australia that certifies the power bank and it's capacity. I have the 28 page document from SGS to be shared if necessary.

    FYI

I bought this and returned it.

I don't think it's a legit 20k ah pack. Only managed to charge my phone from empty to full twice. (Galaxy note 10+)

    Wouldn't recommend it.

    • +4

Mine also appears faulty, after not using it for approx 6+ months. I can fully charge it, it will charge for a little while but goes from say 80% to 0% and requires a full recharge. Battery must be no good

      • +3

These are definitely a let down.

I had another Romoss power bank that would refuse to fast charge a phone when in use.

A Xiaomi power bank fast charged it while in use flawlessly.

      • +4

Reach out to Romoss on Amazon and they'll send you a new one under warranty.

        • I think that was a feature.

Some power hungry phones when in use decrease in battery if it isn't fast charged, hence that feature is very annoying.

Plugging it onto the wall, or using a different power bank all work perfectly

        • How? I have tried to send them an email but they did not respond at all..

    • +7

Must have been a faulty one. I bought one and I use it every few days. Works like a dream. Heavy and bulky as (profanity) though.

      • +2

I also have one and use it every few days, holds charge well and can charge my iPhone 4-5 times before I have to recharge it.
The only issue I have, is after 2 years of use mine makes a weird noise when charging if you hold it close to your ear.

        • +3

The only issue I have, is after 2 years of use mine makes a weird noise when charging if you hold it close to your ear.

This happens to many other power banks as well.

2 yrs does seem a bit too fast

I bought one about 3 months ago and I was thinking the same thing when charging my OnePlus 8 so I pulled it apart and on the back of the lithium battery it literally says 10,000mah 4.2v. I took photos of it too. Is there anyway I can upload them here?

      • +1

Wow , that is certainly an eye opener if they are rebadging 10,000mAh batteries.
Upload on imgur and just post the link. Pretty sure that should work unless oz block external links in comments.

Yeah go to your account settings and you can upload files direct to ozb.

@PopBargain: WOW … Is it possible there's not a 2nd battery behind the one in the photo? Just thought they be paired.

            • +4

@discountguy: There is definitely only one lithium battery.

              • +1

@PopBargain: thanks for checking - it would be great to hear from Romoss as I'd think/hope Amazon would be interested in this

            • +1

@discountguy: That’s what i’m thinking too maybe there’s 2 batteries stacked and connected by the terminals in parallel, best way is to tell by the weight (unless there’s fake weight)

          • @PopBargain: what is the weight of this thing?

          • +1

@PopBargain: Probably need to see some side view pics to see if there's a second cell jammed in there. You won't get the full capacity of the bank when charging your device as it only sold on raw capacity value, real world is about 2/3 of advertised capacity due to charging inefficiencies.

            • +1

@BargainKen: 14800mAh before taking into account the inefficiencies. I'd be really curious to see if it is 2 li-poly cells stacked ontop of each other as they're quite thin.

          • +2

@PopBargain: I wonder if the 30,000 version only has 15,000mAh in it as well…..

Maybe Romoss rep here can comment?????

            • +4

@Warlock: I would love to hear what a Romoss rep has to say about it.

              • +7

@PopBargain: I too would love to hear from Romoss about that and will be messaging them.

For transparency I'm marked as associated because I post deals on behalf of them. As most people here know already… I don't actually work at Romoss.

            • +2

@Warlock: I purchased the 26800 version Oct'ish last year. Works well. No complaints with capacity, will have to do some measured tests. Only downside, heavy

Edit: Also have the 10000mAh, no issues. Finally, an older 7800mAh, "sailing 3" model, 4-5 years old, still going strong.

      • +4

I bought one recently and my tests showed 10,500mAh. So I assumed my testing method was flawed because I thought Ramoss could be trusted. It seems not.

        • @Rogerwilco: Would you be able to open it up and confirm? It could be a fake or Ramoss pulling a dodgy.
See my comment on this subject: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10559429/redir and why you should avoid using it.

          • @Headsuplu: I don't think I could open it without pretty much destroying the case and I don't want to do that.

        • So I decided to retest mine. I took it down to 0% and recharged it to 100%. It reached 10240mAh. A very disappointing result again.

          • @Rogerwilco: How are you conducting your test?

            • @Clear: I'm just using a USB power meter in series with the charging cable.

        • +1

If there's anyone still interested I have some testing updates as well as some info from Romoss.

They sent me a photo showing that their 20000mAh power banks do indeed have 2 cells in parallel to make up a 20000mAh battery pack.

My basic tests indicate the efficiency of the power bank decreases sharply when you fast charging. The higher the output voltage and/or current will result in considerably less capacity remaining than slower charging is done. So for the convenience of fast charging you're getting less capacity from the power bank. I assume it would be a similar story with any brand power bank, not just Romoss.

My final test results are below, noting that according the equivalent capacity of the 3.7v battery pack at 5v is claimed to be around 14,800mAh.

5v/1A output was around 13,750mAh on my usb load tester.
          12v/1A around 10,400 mAh.
12/1.5A around only 5,850mAh. This one especially surprised me.

          • @Rogerwilco: This is interesting and may explain the terrible experience I had with the charger. I was always using fast charging.

Are you saying if you use the power bank to fast charge your phone you get less capacity?
Or do you mean if you use a fast charger to charge the power bank you get less capacity?

            • @edrift: I mean if you use the power bank to fast charge another device you won't get as much capacity from it compared to slow charging the same device. For example you may be able to fast charge a phone 3 times before the power bank is empty but maybe 4 times on an identical capacity phone that uses slow charging.

I don't think that fast charging the power bank will make a difference to how much capacity it has.

              • @Rogerwilco: Ok thanks. That would explain why I could only get 2 charges out of it as I was fast charging my phone

      • How do you pull it apart? Does it damage the battery pack?

Cause I have a 30k romoss and I kind of felt the same thing. That it feels more like a 20k.

      • @PopBargain: Was the powerbank purchased from Amazon?

There are reports of Amazon selling counterfeit products.

        For more see: https://defensivecomputingchecklist.com/#zoneofama

Romoss needs to implement a method to validate the authenticity of its product. For example (on some) Xiaomi products they provide a hidden unique code (that you scratch to reveal). The code is entered on their website to validate its legitimacy. To deter the code from being mass copied the website keeps a track of how many times this code has been used on the website.

Either Romoss or the distributor are doing a dodgy. Would like to hear an official statement from Romoss on how they will remedy this and what they will be doing to combat this.

Be cautious of using counterfeit powerbanks, cables and even public power outlets as they can be compromised or engineered for maliciously activity. Same principle as internet banking on a a public computer. Can you trust the computer and its devices connected to it to be safe to use?
Example video of malicious USB cable: https://t.co/3iNjLqXloW
With the tremendous amounts of cyber attacks on the rise, your security is a big concern. I would recommend looking into using USB Data Blocker's.

      • I bought one of the 30+ and thought it was lacking so i recharged it a few times to see if it needs to be broken in, still seem less than what they advertised.

Got another one, the 30+ with the lcd display, that one seems better with capacity but still think it isn’t as advertised either, and with your post, I should return them now.

        • +1

It's important to remember that if a power bank has a capacity of 10000mAh and your phone is 2000mAh then you won't get 5 recharges out of it. To put it very simply mobile devices have their battery capacity rated at 5V and power banks have theirs rated at 3.7V.

So the calculation is 3.7V x 10000 / 5 = 7400mAh. Or in the case of the 30000mAh power bank it's 22200mAh. The other part is how efficient it is at transferring that power to your device that will make it seem even less.

    • +2

Yup, bought this a year ago, and charged around 10+ times and get swelling (4mm expand) and no longer hold charges and a bit worry to keep charging, and possibly out of warranty and dump to battery recycle. Other Romoss 10000 mAh still working but not this one.

    • I had a poor experience with one of these also. I used it for a while and it was great however it bloated up when it was sitting in my drawer. Apparently they only have a 12 month warranty and it was just outside that. Best they could offer me was a 30% off coupon.

For what it's worth I have a second one of these and also a 10k variant which has also be fine.

    • I got 2 last year. One for each of my kids to use on their Switch Lites.

One works perfectly. Holds charge reasonably well and works exactly as you would expect.

The other stopped working altogether. Only noticed recently as it had not been used in a while as my other kids Switch had died.

Amazon refunded me for it no problem though as it was well within warranty.

    • I don't think it's a legit 20k ah pack.

@edrift: Is it possible it was a counterfeit or Ramoss doing a dodgy?

I commented on this issue and why you need to avoid.

      See: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10559429/redir

  • It doesn’t ship to Australia?

    • It does. Check you don't have your address set to a PO Box or parcel locker.

  • Has anyone got recommendations on a 20K power bank that suits USB-C charging for iPhone 12 & iPad Pro? I’m finding most I look up still have multiple old school USB ports and only one USB-C port. The OP device looks pretty good, but it only has one USB-C port

  • I rate it, had it for a while now, at around this price point. It lasts for ages, and I use it in my car for emergencies mostly given it's size. Safe to say, I rarely have to charge up this device. It's also taken a HUGE beating, mine looks like it went through a war zone with scratches every and has even survived a bottle bursting in my bag.

As for fast charging…it's rediculous fast on the USB-c to usb-c.

Romoss in the running for the next military breakthrough imo.

    • Yeah I bought this model 2 years ago and it hasn't skipped a beat. I don't use it that frequently but it lasts forever and fast charges my phone.

    • +1

I challenge you to actually test it properly. I guarantee it won't work as good as you think it does.

I originally thought it was great, but by chance I needed to charge my phone from flat, twice, and that's when I discovered it was only capable of doing that, nothing more.

    • A bit much saying it is the next military breakthrough…

  • +1

I have the 30000mAh edition. When it's working it's fine. The USB-C Port fast charged my Pixel phone

After around 6 months the USB C port failed.

So they swapped it over and gave me a new one

After around 6 months the USB C port failed.

    I would avoid.

  • I have the 20000mAh SW20Pro. Its pretty much dead within a week even if not used. Over the 1 year so didn't bother. Note that they did change the design of it and it has a different layout of ports, which is this version (SW20PS+). 26800 mah version still going strong. Willing to give this newer one a shot.

    • It's the luck of the draw with these power banks. I bought one of the SW20PS+ and it didn't even last 24hrs before all the ports and screen died.

  • I have 2 of the 30+ (26800mAh) ones and they charge my phone multiple times and I've had flawless usage since SEP 2020. Though it does annoy me that they sort of mislead with the 30+ model number. When they have a 30+ one that is actually rated at 30,000mAh.

  • now wondering if my previous romoss wasnt the advertised capacity

  • Don't buy this, I bought one in January and now it only charges my iphoneX once…
    This brand is much better.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/20000mAh-RAVPower-Portable-Deliver…

    • This looks good, but it only has two ports and costs $72 ($80-10% discount on webpage). Anyone else recommend this brand?

      • I've got a RAVPOWER powerbank car jump starter that actually works and consistently holds its charge even when not regularly used, so I can recommend that brand. If you're not in a hurry to buy then wait as they regularly have amazon discounts that get advertised on OzBargain.

  • I’ve had mine for ages. Works no problems, holds charge and I can charge my iPhone X at least 5 times from near flat (that’s just from memory not actual testing).

  • damn…sorry to hear about the commenter that showed his battery is 10,000mAh only…and other dodgy stories from other people
i bought the 30,000mAh one a while back and its been serving me fine … i haven't ever tested how much it holds tho but it does recharge me and my mum's phones several times… i do avoid them when deals are posted because the way their products are designed and the way they market isn't very appealling to me…

  • My 20k Romoss is basically a paperweight now.

Its useless as a power bank

  • I have a 20,000MaH one that seems to be working OK. I can charge my phone about 4 times before it's drained. But somehow the kids can make it go from 100% to 0% in a blink of an eye. I love coming back to use it and finding that it's on 0% after the kids have touched it.. really makes my day. :(
