Just realised it's 42" and not 50", but it's still a pretty nice price.

Did you realise that when you read the title of the listing?

I just realised first comment is useless.

  • is the neo plasma worth the extra $100+ over the UT30 3D model which bing lee was selling for $540?

  • How do plasma TVs measure up against LCD/LED TVs in terms of power consumption? Any other things I need to watch out for if I get a plasma TV?

    • +3

watch for the better blacks on panasonic plasmas in particular :P

power consumption use to be quite a lot more than the higher end LCD's but I was looking at them the other day and they've gotten a lot better. It's much of a much-ness as advantages for both are no longer that far ahead between the two that it really doesn't matter too much unless thin-ness is your biggest priority…
Also depends on who you are talking too. Still feel that a lot of people seem to talk crap about plasmas tv's and have no basis on these claims other than hearing it from a friend of a friend of a friend who learnt this information from a pamphlet 10 years ago.

I would pay attention to whether you prefer active or passive 3d.

      • A lot of folks keener than myself have done the calculations of equivalent size plasma vs LCD power consumption. IIRC the difference is something negligible like $30/year based on a nominal amount of viewing hours. Those discussions are all over WP & OzB.

Yep, same goes for the whole 100Hz hype, man some idiots just keep falling for that old chestnut! Some salesman told their mate that it's twice as fast as 50Hz, so it must be right 'cause sales staff:
        a. Much like Vulcans, do not lie.
        b. Again, much like our green-skinned friends use perfect logic & are thus never wrong.

Spot on! I can't stand active myself, I can see the flicker out of the corner of my eye & it drives me nuts!

Compared to my 56kg 27" CRT which runs at 220 Watts, I'd say pretty good.

      • Haha sony trinitron ftw!

  • JB had that 10% off all tv sale the other week. got the 51 inch 51d550 Samsung 3d plasma for $710.

    • people have been getting that for $640

  • model no = TH-P42ST30A

  • great tv at a great price , obviously panasonic have given clearance rights to jbhifi this season

  • is this a passive or shutter 3D. I tried some "cheper" 3d passive glasses, and they did not do anything (double images), but was quite close to the screen. is there a minimum distance you have to be?

Also is there a Good Cheep and Cheerful 3D player available somewhere ?

    • This TV is active 3d (LCD shutter glasses). I dont believe it comes with any glasses by default but you may be able to get them to throw a set in for free (although given that the RRP on a set is something close to $150 then perhaps not). Only the higher end Panasonic models seem to include glasses by default now.

If you did not see any effect from passive glasses then its likely you were standing too close and perhaps your head height was above the TV? This will generally lead to the image being doubled up with a passive system. You need to sit with your head at around the same height as the centre of the screen for best results. A passive system will result in half the vertical resolution as it uses every other scanline to create the 3d effect by hiding/revealing the lines with polarized lenses, this means one eye is seeing odd lines, and the other is seeing the even lines. Active 3d, on the other hand allows for full 1080P resolution however it can darken the picture somewhat so brightness is generally amped up a bit to allow for this.

  • I am looking for this tv now, anyone knows where can i get a deal like this. the best one i saw is at BBB which is 687. cheers
