TPG 250/25 Mbps Upgrade Speeds Dropped to around 100

Hi everyone, recently TPG upgraded my NBN 50 plan to a 250 one and I have been more than happy with the speeds achieving 267-269 Mbps on my wifi. However, just today when I did a speed test I saw that the speeds were fluctuating from 100 to 120 Mbps instead of the consistent 267 I have been achieving for the past few months.

Is this something thats also happening with other TPG users or is it something on my end thats causing the problem. The router is new and like I mentioned before it previously was able to achieve 267 and I have not changed anything besides a few router restarts and unplug and replug of the ethernet cable from the FTTP nbn box (which shouldn't have caused the drop in speeds)

It's a shame that this happened because I was considering upgrading to faster nbn whether that be with TPG or some other ISP.

Thanks

  • Speeds are best effort, do fluctuate and maybe there was congestion today from TPG. Test your speeds tomorrow.

TPG are doing Gigabit through the 6 month upgrades. Oddly enough TPG don't sell the Gigabit and 250 plan yet. To get on Gigabit now you can swap ISP.

    • So one thing I forgot to test was connecting to my nbn via ethernet and when I tested it just then using my Orbi Mesh which is connected to the TP-Link router via ethernet I got 269 mbps. I would presume that the same thing will happen if I connected directly with my laptop (a little stressed with time to run out and get a usb c adapter).

Are there any methods I can take to try and fix my issue now that I narrowed it down to the router being the possible cause of my issue.

The router is a TP-LINK VR1600v. I know you recommended me to get an AX20 but TPG was willing to give the VR1600v for free so I wanted to test that out before buying the AX20.

Could this be a planned obsolesce/designed to fail thing haha

      • Always do tests with Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi problems. Don't worry about the USB-C adapter. Do you use TPGs landline phone service?

        • Are you talking about my home phone thats connected to the UNI-V port?

          • @HairyChickens: Yeah the home phone. Purchasing the AX20 isn't necessary if you have an Orbi. What you should do is remove the VR1600 and plugin one of the Orbi to the nbn box.

            • @Twix: The main reason why I needed a mesh is that the TP-LINK can't reach the master bedroom. I tried using the Orbi as my main router but it gets knocked down to 160-180 probably because its just a cheapo RBK12 whereas the TP-LINK could get 250 in most rooms.

So finding a fix to this issue would be nice.

              • @HairyChickens: RBK12 specs and performance is cut down. The fix is to replace the lot. Is the router plugged in next to the nbn box and is it in the garage? Is your limit still $250?

                • @Twix: No the wifi setup is in the middle of the house in the living room. My limit is still 250 but I don't want to spend it if I don't have to (I'm such a cheapo). Do you think a firmware update will do something?

                • @Twix: So still the AX20 and M5 mesh (potentially)?

                  • @HairyChickens: Yeah upgrade if the problem didn't fix itself from TPG's end or you change to Gigabit.

  • I had the same with iinet - they told me I should turn my router off and on - and that I should be doing that at least once a week……………apparently thats reasonable?

Be blessed to live closer to Andrew Filter Town. Poor folks further away even get Aussiebroadband to dribble.

    1. If you have a laptop, connect directly via ethernet to your NTD. (bypass modem so no excuses)
    2. Run speed test and see the results
    3. If they are low, then take 3 photos, morning, noon and evening if the speeds are consistent.
    4. Contact TPG customer support and send photos.

I did this with Superloop as the upload speeds are crap. So try this and you may get compensated or fixed. (I am still waiting for my resolution)
