  • "Capacity 1TB (1,000GB)"

Seems an error on the page specs ?

  • Cos if it really is 1TB thats a dayum good deal :D

    • It should be 500GB for this price…. also still not too bad.
Though no mention about the drive, can you imagine an expensive and luxurious Porsche but they installed a 2 Litre engine?

      • Well, the morons actually had to 'buy' the harmonic balancers for the 944 from Mitsubishi (Astron 2.6L) because they couldn't design a motor that didn't vibrate the crap out of the car…

  • +1

ooo baby porsche design… now i can say i drive a porsche.

    • +4

Not quite, but you can say you porsche your drive.

  • can you put a 1TB or 2TB 2.5" HD in this case?

  • Now showing as $139?

  • is it really by Porsche? that box is all lines and no curves, totally opposite to the cars!

    • +13

Yes, your 80-dollar, external HDD is really hand-built by Porsche in Leipzig, by two guys called Johann and Fritz, who are executed at dawn if they dare leave one bad sector in any HDD that leaves the factory.

The aluminium used in the casing is sourced from melted-down Panzer tanks piloted by some of the most skilful German tank aces of WW2.

The quick start guide is printed on an authentic reproduction, U-Boat Code Book in water-soluble ink and the HDD itself has a "Suicide Pill" .bat file in the root directory which, if executed, formats the drive and bricks it with a botched firmware update, making it impossible to use again; these features can be used to deny all knowledge if your hard drive falls into enemy hands. Or if your mother catches you hammering one out.

They even stamp the itemised serial number of production onto each HDD and give you a gold-plated key to turn it on with.

If you lose any amount of data on the drive, for whatever reason, within the duration of it's lifetime, Porsche will fly a helicopter to your premises, recover the hard drive with a 12-man search & rescue qualified unit and fly it over to Deustchland, post-haste for critical data recovery in an NBC-sealed bunker that not even a spy satellite can penetrate.

Each HDD comes with a formal letter of gratitude from Ferdinand Oliver Porsche himself, outlining his deep commitment to data integrity and USB connectivity across ze vorld.

Your Porsche Design HDD vill last… for a thousand years.

        Best. Rant.

im tempted but am just worried about the actual disk that is in the case. Lacie doenst' produce any hark disks but all these beautiful cases. Hope it's a WD inside…then i'll buy a few right away. Personally i dont like Maxtor or seagate.

  • I hope they made it in Germany.

: ) don't take any thing too seriously

  • +1

    You's missed the 1TB DESKTOP version, $98!!! http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_i…

    • Still no mention of what drive brand (model & speed) LaCe use in there external cases.

      • +3

If it was a good drive, they would advertise it…..

    • Jo3y, that is an externally powered drive, the one posted is a 'portable' USB powered, big difference.

  • If it's like any porsche car, it's probably got some real piece of crap inside…

nice looking drive with usb 3 at a reasonable price (esp for lacie and the current circumstances).

A few years ago they use to be fujitsu, others reported maxtor(horrible brand which is owned by seagate now) and seagate. i did a quick search and couldn't find what was in this one. Seems all the hype comes from the mac community.

if this was just an enclosure, it would be okay to just whip in a drive of your choice but with this you need to factor in the controller and hope that they didn't just bundle a cheap arse drive in there. judging by the website they at least cover the drive for 2 years (limited)

    • there's just four companies these days so its no big deal

      wdc, seagate, hitachi, samsung

      its all the same really

      • +1

I back WD all the way, wouldn't dream of using anything else

        • agree. I used to have one fujitsu and seagate portable drives two years ago. both of them broke down in 4 months. Now im using one WD and one Toshiba, both of them are still working perfectly. Love them.

      • Not really the same, as this is a Porsche I would expect a 7,200 rpm SATA drive but since there is no info I guess it's an old 5,400 rpm IDE drive.

  • -2

There is a chance they used old malfunctioning drives: http://eggdrop.ch/blog/2006/04/02/disassembling-an-external-…

    • a post from 2006? thats a different product all together!

      • -1

Yes from 2006 but there other articles even more recent (I just picked up one) just in case you want to spend some time.

Also why Lacie don't intentionally tell us what drive is inside?

  • +1

    500GB 2.5'' inside is seagate ST9500325AS 5400RPM
so sorry for those people for dream about 7200rpm
    it won't happen

    • So then this is a fake Porsche :)

  • and LaCie 1TB Porsche 2.5' is WD inside

    • -1

Not always, Lacie intentionally don't say what is the drive because it's always different depending on OEM manufacturer and country's distributor (don't ever think that Lacie make the thing for you).

For example if you buy the Lacie in US you would find inside a Samsung or Hitachi drive.
My main concern is that Lacie advertise this thing as being a Porsche but inside the case they install old technology and they don't tell you, I would say this is a misleading behaviour.
We had the 5200rpm some years ago, then advertising told us 7200rpm is better, then sata 1,2,3 etc. and now ssd drivers, so these 5200rpm drives they put inside are just obsolete.

If it was me, I would forget about design and buy a more reliable external drive spending less money.
Alternatively, if I need more juice, I'll buy the case and the drive separately so I can choose a even better drive.

      • porsches are old technology though!

  • So for the people who have received the drive, what is the brand of drive that is inside? Can somebody have a look.

    • @mmulv2
I have received my 1TB drives, & they are WD HDDs…..

      • is this a 2.3" or the 3.5" HDD? can you please let me know.. thanks

        • +1

          @gandhi28152
I bought the 2.5" 1TB LaCie Porsche Design P’9220, & they have WD HDDs in them

          Best Regards,
          Roberta

    • 3.5" 2TB, Seagate inside, ST2000DL 001-9VT156
