Argon ONE Case for Raspberry Pi 4 $28.50 (42% off) + Shipping @ Core Electronics

320

Heads-up, we just slashed the price on our remaining stock of Argon ONE (a case for the Raspberry Pi 4).

There is a newer version case around the corner that has full-sized HDMI connectors (as much as we personally prefer the original Mico HDMI connectors). Though everything else is much the same.

Argon One is our favourite Raspberry Pi case and loaded with features:

  • Seriously stylish (how good does it look!)
  • NUC-like design (all connectors are brought around to one side).
  • Excellent WiFi signals thanks to the plastic base
  • Brilliant passive cooling (the whole top part of the case is a heatsink)
  • Built-in fan with programmable speeds. For example, remain off+silent unless the CPU hits a crusty 80ÂșC
  • Power button with soft-shutdown
  • Accessible GPIO with colour coded pinout
  • Always on Feature - The Argon one now includes the ability to automatically power up after a power loss

Two per customer limit. Only while stock lasts (there's not much left)

  • why would you prefer the original Mico HDMI connectors?

    • Personal preference - newer SBCs are going that way. Anything smaller on SBCs often means more potential for better/newer features both now and in the future.

    • It's discounted because this is now a new revision out with HDMI ports I think.

Heya - USB to m.2/SATA support works on both ONE variants. There is an entirely different model that also supports M.2 Native, though that costs more.

        • How much will the new version cost? Is there a newer version without the m.2 board? Still prefer HDMI ports.

          • +2

@netsurfer: It'll certainly cost more. This has been, and remains, our favourite case to date. It is sad to see it go!

              • +2

@netsurfer: That's an entirely different model, not the Argon ONE or ONE V2 ;)

                • @CoreElectronics: That's not entirely accurate - it is essentially a ONE V2 with the M.2 baseplate! Either way, nice piece of gear, and if you need the power for the M.2, grab the PowerTran 5V/4A supply from core and the 2.1mm to USBC adapter (just be aware, you need a slim hdmi connector with this setup if you want to use both hdmi ports - ask me how I know …).

Also, if you are going the M.2 route, you may need to do a firmware upgrade to get full TRIM support (not sure if the new boards have sorted this issue yet). PM me if you this can't be found easily on the Rpi or Argon40 sites.

A quick side question - do you know when/if core is likely to stock the Remote for the V2?

  • Seeing as 1 per customer. Shipping kills the deal for me.

    • +2

We've up'd it to 2, just for you!

Even with shipping in the mix, it's a bargain. :) Though all good either way - we thought it worth sharing with the OzBargin community as we often do when specials come up.

For most of AU (in terms of population), single unit shipping would be $6.60 via Fastway or $6.97 via AusPost. Rates will be higher in non-metro areas.

      • Do the M2 Sata upgrades at half price as well and you might have a deal.

  • Does it support PoE HATs?

    • No, for POE HAT support, either go with the Argon Poly or the Argon Neo

      • I am looking at the picture for Argon Poly and Argon Neo and they are (probably) bad for PoE HATS because there is no way to vent the hot air.

Can anyone who's used either Argon Poly or Argon Neo with PoE HAT comment?

        • +1

My Pi3 B+ PoE Hat went naked and served for over 2 months without any problem. You can also go Argon NEO without the top cover if yours is Pi 4.

        • Argon Poly is great for active cooling as it has holes in the base plate which assist with air flow.

          • @CoreElectronics:

            holes in the base plate

Holes in the bottom plate means the airflow is still restricted with the hot air having no place to go.

I agree with @Garcia and my current rPi 4 + PoE HAT is running "naked", side and top panels removed, because the current case is not doing a good job cooling.

            • @sanmigueelbeer: Have you got something to back that claim? The holes are great for recycling air and I've run many a test with Stressberry to compare2 this and other cases. Argon Poly performs splendidly - it's not possible to get anywhere near the upper thermal limits in normal environments with this case and a POE HAT (or any active cooling system we've tested in conjunction with that case). It easily outpaces the official RPi variant for cooling.

              • @CoreElectronics:

Have you got something to back that claim?

The holes are at the bottom. Cool air comes from the bottom and the fan kicks the hot air "up" to the top cover. Unless the top cover has an opening to "vent" the hot air out, the hot air is circulating inside the case.

Like I said before, I have an rPi with PoE HAT. If I leave the side and top panels on, the fan tend to spool up very often. When I pop the side and top panels off, the fan do not start up quite as often.

Ok, still do not believe me? Then have a look at THIS, THIS or THIS.

Not running a debate with you as I am not a thermal dynamics expert. If you claim the case will/can keep the PoE HAT cool then fine.

But when (not "if") I am ready to purchase another case for an rPi + PoE HAT, I am going after the ones that are "vented" (I am very sure I am using the wrong terminology so please give me the right word for it).

EDIT: Found the Argon Poly+ Vented with Argon Mini Fan Kit. If the Argon Poly is "ideal" for rPi with PoE HAT, then why did re-design one "with air vents for cooling"?

Is that a newer Raspberry Pi 4 with full-sized HDMI connectors or a newer Argon ONE Case with full-sized HDMI connectors?

    • +1

      Case

      • Interesting… So the newer Argon ONE Case would somehow need to have a micro to full HDMI converter/adapter which would increase the overall unit size. I don't understand the unnecessary change? Because wouldn't people shy away from the newer version opting for a smaller form factor case?

        • +1

It uses an adaptor PCB inside to route the HDMI around to the back of the case. Pretty clever guys!

  • How about a deal on the Raspberry Pi 4 2/4/8GB?

    • +3

Not for a very-very long while, thanks to the silicon shortage. Perhaps in a year or two, when things return to normal.

For now, we have worked hard to ensure stock is available in Australia for a wide range of Dev Boards and SBCs.

The latest release of the Argon One case includes an Always On feature to automatically power up your Pi

Rep, can you please confirm v1 has that feature? On the photo of the actual v1 board shown, I cannot see those jumper pins being wired.

*Always on Feature - The Argon one now includes the ability to automatically power up after a power loss

I am concerned about the *

    • They sure do. This feature rolled out many productions runs ago and all of our gear supports it.

  • Always wanted one of these but couldn't quite justify the cost, so used the Neo instead. Picked one up now with some other bits, thanks!

For anyone wondering, I and many others here have used CE moment times and always had a great experience :)

    I own one, great case.

  • Is it possible to get cables to the CSI and USB C ports? I want to hook up a CSI to HDMI adaptor and use the type C port for gadgets but it doesn't look like they're accessible with this case.

  • +1

Just ordered two! I ordered 2 Pi4 from these guys about a week ago for the lab, this is perfect timing for a great case.
Last order was packed really well, secured INSIDE the box with additional packing and tape.

  • Core Electronics give great support

  • If I buy the Argon One M.2 from your website instead, is that the same as if I got an Argon One via this deal as well as the M.2 Expansion Board? The pricing is around the same so I am a little confused.

    • +1

The Argon one M.2 case is effectively the V.2 case (full size HDMI, remote sensor) with the M.2 board.

If you buy the Argon One V1.0 at discount (this deal), you get the micro HDMI, no remote sensor case with SD card base. If you add the M.2, you can switch between the SD base and the M.2 base - may or may not be useful to you. I'm tossing this option up, as I may be looking at an in memory media player which can happily load off SD.
