Been watching Alienware M17x laptop prices as I'm in the market. Noticed today that they're running a promotion on M17x series where 3D capability is included (glasses, high refresh 120Hz screen which normally valued just shy of $450 from memory)

Thought it was a complete freebie…

  • I noticed that yesterday as well. But they removed option for non-3d model. Which means you can't have 6990m.
Either get gtx 560m or upgrade to gtx 580.

  • Xpire - Haha free M17x or just the screen? Edited the working slightly

nicksnoobie - Any reason you prefer the 6990m? I was looking at 6990m and GTX580m and from what I remember pricing to be like they might be including what was previously a 6990m to 580m upgrade (approx $450) for free too. Same spec machine I was looking at a week ago now cheaper.

    • 6990m for non-3d model
I agreed with you on the free upgrade but I don't think gtx 560m would handle 3D gaming that well. And if you want to get gtx 580m you have to add $600. but in US only $225. also starting price is cheaper as well. So I think it's a much better value.

  • With prices starting from $2799 it would well be worth using starthere.com for % cashback.

and if I was going to buy the 3d model, I'm not gonna buy it from Dell AU.
    Dell AU, m17x 3d GTX 560m = $2799
if you want GTX580m you will be looking around $3,397.39.
I doubt 15% discount code would apply since they are offering free upgrade for 3D.

http://www.hidevolution.com/alienware-m17x-r3-3d-custom-buil… Might ended up at similar price here but you get gtx 580m
    $2149 + $171.25 shipping = $2320.25 + tax should be around $2550
About warranty I'm not 100% sure but I think you can transfer it.

  • I was looking for this gaming laptop too although I still see no practical benefit on 3D features also there are concerns regarding the side effects on your sight.

Dell also has made a big mess here and this shows that they don't understand much about computers, I guess they want to get rid of stock so they give free 3D stuff.
2x hard drives in RAID 0 which means the highest chance of lost data and so your OS will always have troubles.

    • I still see no practical benefit on 3D features

Some people buy 3D monitor/laptop just for refresh rate. Did you know that? They don't use 3D features.

I guess they want to get rid of stock so they give free 3D stuff.

or they didn't reach their profit margin or whatever you call that.

I didn't learn much about the 3D stuff other than the health side effects.

But your hidevolution link looks good although I'll wait more until prices drop to something more friendly.

Alienware, the most exorbitantly overpriced hardware on the market.

  • Misleading title.
