Cheap nbn Router

Hi

Can anyone recommend a cheap NBN router for a small 2 storey house.

I will be getting an NBN 25mps plan and 2 people will be living in the property.

I have an HFC connection.

Would the following router be sufficient? - https://www.catch.com.au/product/tp-link-300mbps-wireless-n-…

Thanks!

  • Wireless N is slow as don't get it. Get Wireless AC instead.

    • OP is on 25Mbps NBN so 54mbps wireless is enough.

N is old wifi technology. It might be a small 2 storey house, but we don't know what the house is built from. We also don't know how many other houses are around and we also don't know what the OP will be using the internet for. If a lot of houses are around 2.4Ghz wifi can be really slow due to interference.

If OP can only afford N then go with N, but if OP wants to ensure they get high speed internet every where in the house go with a cheap AX wifi router. My small tiny AX wifi router can reach high speeds in my house in places that my gaming AC wifi router cannot. The AX wifi standard has changed my life.

  • TP Link product page.

It is only a router does not include modem. Check the diagrams on the product page.

What are the differences between a router and a modem?

Will I need a modem? I note I have the HFC black box.

      Thanks!

      • The HFC box is the modem and all you need is a router. How cheap are we talking? $20, $50, $100?

        • I'm aiming for around $50?

      • Modem has an additional chip. You can see at the back there is additional port that looks like the old phone jack.

  • to extend upon this forum without making a new thread as I am also looking for cheap router.

i am moving into new place in a few days that has FTTP. ive already lined up the superloop 100(free upgrade to 250 for 3 months). how do i know if i need a modem or modem/router? ive never had to do this stuff before as its my first time out of home. i have found a couple second hand on gumtree but wondering if they are appropriate.
i can get a netcomm nf18acv for a good price. will this be suitable for 2 light users in a small 1 level apartment? biggest stress would be gaming + netflix going at once. further place from the modem wouldnt even be 10meters.

    • nbn install the NTD box for FTTP and all you do is plugin a router to it. What is the price for the Netcomm NF18ACV? How much do you want to spend?

      • the NF18ACV is 35$. preferably under 100$ at the most hence why looking 2nd hand. if what I get isn't fully sufficient will resell it for something better.

        • Search for a Telstra smart modem gen 2. Ignore the word modem in the name. Overall it is a faster router than the NF18ACV.

          • @Twix: thanks. found one of those also for 35$ but much closer location. ill take your word and get the telstra one.

edit: they also have one for 40$ with 'voice backup' not sure what that is. would i need that?

@jonnys1n: Surprisingly the Telstra one has decent performance. Nah you don't need that.

  • telstra smart modems are good hardware for the money, the voip is locked to telstra on the technicolor versions, but can be unlocked with effort:
