Please Help Me Choose One of These 50" TVs

Hi, would appreciate advice on which 50" inch TV to buy. Was hoping to buy the TV now but the 3 TVs I'm interested are not included in the EOFY sale.
Does anyone know when TVs are usually discounted?

I'm replacing an old Sony Bravia TV. I was going to buy the 2020 model last Dec (Sony 49" X8000H $1195) but it was out of stock for several months.

The new model (Sony X80J $1295) has just arrived. However this review says it's a step down from 2020's Sony X800H and there are better options out there for cheaper.

May consider LG or Samsung (both $995) but don't know which brand is better. Some negative reviews of the remote from Samsung.

Anyone using these TVs currently? Thanks.

What sort of stuff do you intend to watch?

All of these TVs will get the typical "too dim for HDR" type reviews but are likely fine for general viewing with some tweaking and setup.

It's impossible for people on this forum to know what might ultimately irritate you on any TV (viewing angles, remote, menu system, slightly reddish tinge). E.g. the Samsung is a VA screen which has a smaller colour gamet and viewing angle but better contrast ratio. The LG uses an ADS panel (like IPS) and the blacks and greys might merge, but you'll have better viewing angles.

Just choose the one with the least offensive menu system, longest warranty, and best price. There's no perfect choice. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

For what I'd go the Sony over the Samsung, I really dislike the Samsung remote and menu structure and find the colors a bit cartoony. No idea on the LG tv though.

How big was the old TV?

I'd recommend going for a bigger one, at least 65 inch, and add a chromecast with google TV/nvidia shield.

  • Hi all, thanks for your replies.
Old tv size was 40 inch so this is an upgrade. It's for a small room. TV will be used mainly for general viewing.
Samsung's remote will probably be annoying so will consider either LG or Sony. Not sure if the extra $300 for Sony is justified.
The Good Guys don't stock the 50 inch Sony currently. (I've also asked for the prices of the TVs at TGG Commercial in another post).

Suggest u think carefully about size, if >2m away then goto 65" if you can somehow. If you buy smaller you may find yourself upgrading again- sooner rather than later.

+1 Sony due to the software (ironic but true), remote control, and the general level of picture and product QA, unless you have cash for an OLED, but the software and the remote will be a step down, so I would be keen to save my money and get an X80J, just from anywhere but HN for both normal and abnormal reasons.
