Router help - NBN HFC

Hello, it's my first time moving out of home and I'm confused about what I need to set up internet.

I have signed up to Superloops 50Mbps/20Mbps. It's just me living here and it's a small 1 bedroom unit, however I want the speeds to be good enough for 2 people to WFH. The address is connected by HFC.

What do I need to set up internet, is it just a router? I am looking for something that is cheap but functionable (hopefully less than $150).

Thanks!

  • Just a router and nbn supply the modem.

    TP-Link Deco M5 1pk $131.82 + Post @ Wireless1.
    TP-Link Archer AX20 $151.32 + Post @ Wireless1.

    • Awesome - how are you seeing that price though, I'm seeing $169 on Wireless1?

      • Make a free account and use the code BD17 at checkout.

          Amazing, thanks!

    • Just wondering, is the M5 a modem as well as a router? It just says router here: https://www.wireless1.com.au/tp-link-deco-m5-1-pack-whole-ho…

Deco M5 is only a router. There is a Deco DSL-X20 with a VDSL2 modem and router.

  • We’re on the same (hfc) plan. Have an orbi mesh, which is overkill for you but yes, it’s just a matter of setting up the router with your chosen Ssid and psw and plugging it into the hfc “modem”. I’m sure the OZBers will recommend a router in your price pt.

  • Make sure the current tenants leave the NTD in the house or you’ll get no internet and you wrong get it for a whole due to shortages of them!!!

    • They took it but NBN is coming next week to replace it - I thought there would be huge delays as well but got an appointment through superloop pretty quickly.. either I got lucky or supply chain has started flowing again.

      • Plenty of NTDs for HFC available now. Just that NBN screwed up their scheduler app and they are trying to rectify the situations with a huge backlog to clear. The fact that you got the service scheduled so quickly gives me hope that the backlog is going to be cleared soon and finally they can restart connecting new HFC customers. I had been waiting since February.

        • Resuming at the end of July. Those who have waited the longest get priority and self-install kits will be used where possible.

@Twix: That's good to know but somehow I am expecting something to fk up again.

  • Telstra Smart Modem Gen2 is all you need, sub $50 on Facebook Marketplace.
1 bed your prob not pushing far in m2. and It'll cover it good enough.
a Mesh is silly for the size place you are after.
I'm using and was decent coverage for a 2bed apartment with modem one side of the place to the other and about 75m2 all up.
I got mine for like $25 on fb marketplace but most are asking more now.

The only reason to go with anything higher is if you intend to go for a plan 250mb or faster speeds on nbn. I'm on Gigabit and wired i get close to 950 but overwirelss its only 300-400 at distance.. so will be upgrading to AX to help with that.
