Selling Disposable Face Masks to Customers Who Show up with No Mask

Just gauging everyones opinion on selling disposable face masks to customers who show up for an appointment and don’t have a mask with them. Now I’m only talking about $1 each, just to cover costs.

COVID has been around for long enough now with face mask rules constantly coming and going and even know face masks previously were not required to be worn at my business this time around it is required. Although masks on previous restrictions weren’t needed a lot of customer would show up thinking they needed to wear a mask but did not have one with them. Like COVID didn’t start yesterday.

So do I just give them a mask for no cost or sell them a disposable mask for $1?

Re: Donate to charity option - a small perspex 'donation' box in front of the masks, avoiding any 'authorisation'. problems by not labelling anything other than that, as a sort of 'sorry' box. Put a few $1 and $2 coins to seed it, or throw a few silver ones in there if you'd be happy with that, and see how you go. You should at least get the costs of the mask back with the only potential friction point being ' you need a mask' and the presence of one easing the situation, or you could tip the whole lot in a [say] Guide dog collection box for a warm glow while still getting the point across/providing customers with a back-up option.

If, OTOH, you've a barrage of 'sovereign citizens' coming through, then they do what they like, when they like, because they're adults, right!

    Cost vs benefit mate.

Does your business rely on returning customer? Or, is it one of those place where people visit once and not come back? When you decide to charge $1, how many will be unhappy? What’s the chance of them leaving a bad review?

I am assuming COVID-19 have affected your business so every cents incurred as an expense will likely to bother you. But, you really need to ask yourself, will $0.80 extra profit from selling a mask help me in any ways? I know you are talking about the principles, but it’s not worth pursuing IMO.

  • my question is customers are paying $50 for 15mins but cant afford a $1 mask ? i mean the business could just not have them available would people still complain when turned away?

  • Sounds like a plan to anger ~half of your customers. Regardless, depending on your philosophy, here are some ideas:
    - If you are a socialist: give them out for free.
    - If you are a communist: give out mask stamps for customers to redeem elsewhere.
    - If you are a capitalist: put together a small mask assembly line in the back, and sell them for 5 cents more than your running costs.
    - If you don`t know what the hell you are doing: wear 2 masks on top of each other while talking with non-masked customers.

OP's business benefits from angry customers.

      • That is actually awesome. Piss them off more and they pay for another 15 minutes! Genius!!!

How many customers actually don't bring a mask?

Maybe you need to put on your website that mask are required.

Also add signage outside your business regarding masks.

  • Had similar experience in Chermside shopping center, so went to apple show room, got the free mask from entrance, can went back to original store…
Feel great that I got a freebie from apple

  • How much do you pay for customer acquisition and conversion? Probably a few bucks per paying customer?

How much do you pay for customer retention? A few bucks as well?

I'd look at this as a very cheap investment in customer retention and give them out at no cost to the customer.
