Good headset for the price for PCVR

    • +12

      Unsure why this was downvoted.

This is basically a Index that you can buy in AU (Same lenses, earphones, updated processing). Unfortunately lacking the knuckles, which are without question the best VR controllers currently. You can buy them seperately, but I personally don't care as a simracer.

The best argument against this is 'but the Quest 2 is $400' - which is insane value for a genuinely great quality headset, and destroys this in value. That said, it's up to you how okay you are with supporting Facebooks domination for the VR space, and pairing POV footage of you jerking off to hentai complete with iris scans. /s

      • +1

I would also let people know that there's less cameras compared to the Rift S, for anyone playing Extreme Beatsaber. This results in missed hits, etc.

      • +1

Ya, Facebook to dominate is dangerous.
For that, only choices left are Valve Index and Reverb G2. (HTC maybe ok, but they are not among my choice.)
In the end, I just go with G2 for the best resolution in VR on earth at this moment.
Watching high resolution video and playing Half Life Alyx sounds justified for its price (~A$900).

And, I dont like being monitored by Facebook / China.

      • +1

You can buy the Index in AU now. EB Games is selling them for the low, low price of ~$1900 AUD, they ship in August.

        • +1

You jest at the price but that price is still cheaper than what it would have been to import it using a forwarding company.

          • +1

@Kozhutki: Plus you get Aussie warranty. It's a good deal compared to importing, but is it really worth double the money of the competition? Maybe.

            • +1

@mackdiddy: I don't think it's worth it purely because it's not wireless. No one has time for cables with VR.

        • +1

Christ. Well, yeah, that makes this a phenomenal deal for an 'updated' Index.

      • Reverb G2 Returner Here

I returned my headset really recently, this was mainly due to how picky the headset is about lighting conditions.
If the lighting is too bright then it wont work and if its too dark it wont work. Now you say "that makes sense its using internal cameras" the Quest 2 isnt nearly as picky which means that the cameras weren't of a high enough quality sadly. I really was hoping that it would be the headset to last lmao but it fell short in many ways for general VR.

It can be good for Sim racers if your lighting is really good but just remember that drift will still be a thing since its internally tracked. There are also QA issues since me and my mates all got ours together and we had pretty different experiences when we traded lol. If you can afford it, the Index is completely worth it.

All that being said the display on this headset is crazy good. Like if u open beat saber for example you're like "holy shit that thing had details?" So if both the index and a used Vive kit / Quest 2 are off the table then go for it. You get used to the sleuth of issues with WMR and Steam interactions and learn your way to work around them.

Head to the subreddit for places to care for it.

Also worth noting that if you have a fb or insta account then theres really no need to fear the q2 since they have alot of ur data anyway. I for one dont have socials other than an ig im boutta close and a discord so yeah. Forgot where I was going with this so ill leave it here I guess? visible confusion looking at screen

        • Appreciate the information. I have read that the G2 does indeed still have plenty of issues, which is why I haven't jumped on this deal.

I think unfortunately, we're still a handful of years away from 'good' VR - iris tracking with FOVeated rendering, hardware that can run it, a locomotion system that works, games designed with VR in mind, etc. Inside out tracking as a whole isn't great unsurprisingly, and fresnel lenses need to die off as well. There's just still a lot to be done.

That said, indeed, the display itself in this is insane. I do wonder what it'd be like with lighthouses, but that's money I'm unwilling to spend to find out.

Anyone know if HP have made any improvements since the original batch?

I had a pre-order, was pretty unimpressed with the unit I received (coming from a Reverb G1, the sweet spot and FOV were both downgrades) and stopped following the news around it since then.

Would be happy to give it another go at this price if there's been changes though.

  • Have they fixed any of the issues yet?
Im considering this over my Quest2 for the higher detail on pcvr

    • Is there more to it than a change from 1832 x 1920 to 2160 x 2160? I don't know much about displays for VR.

      • +3

Awesome… but won't you need a $2,000 GPU to drive that resolution well.
Might be better to settle for a Quest2.. Actually that's not a huge resolution difference. Unless there's some other meaningful difference then Quest2 may be the better deal.

        • +2

Quest 2 is amazing, and the option to play stand alone is killer

        • It's only 32% more pixels than the Quest 2. That's why I asked if there was any difference aside from resolution.

I also lucked out and for a pc with a 3070 before prices went too far up, so I can probably run 2160 x 2160 at moderate settings in some games. Pre-recorded video is another one where your GPU isn't going to be a factor, there's some mindblowingly cool shit out there like videos of reefs and all kinds of stuff, and they really suffer on the quest 2 when you're looking at the edges of the shot. Ultimately it's not enough for me to buy a second headset, but it'll be good to know about this stuff when it's time for my next one in a couple of years.

        • I have a 5900x and 3080FE.
I only use my quest2 to play Steamvr. So better image quality and wider FOV is something im interested in, provided things like the tracking have neen sorted.

  • +1

is this still the best on the market at this price range?

not sure if i should wait till new 2022 headsets come out…

  • Get one then sell it when the new ones arrive.

Pretty happy with the Quest 2.

    • Weird that you can go backward on the resolution…
The HP G2 image are so much better that a Quest 2.

      • +3

G2 is best for simulators, Quest 2 is best for shooters/interactive games, the tracking is miles better.

  • +3

I was thinking of getting this while having or currently have a DK2, CV1, Quest 1 & 2 but hearing how small the sweetspot is on the G2 I think I'll pass. I mainly play Elite Dangerous and MFS 2020 and my eyes are darting around all the time.

The increase in resolution is appealing but I can't sacrifice the size of the sweetspot that the Quest 2 has for these games

    • +1

I've used mine mostly for E:D and it's been great, but I guess it will vary person to person

    • The thing I didn't expect was how noticeable the sweet spot boundary was, but I figured the image quality on the CV1 was comparatively so low that it was probably something I previously couldn't see.

  • +1

This is very very good for flight / car sims. Recommended. Though you may need some decent GPU horsepower depending what you are playing.

  • I've had one since launch, if you're only playing sims this is headset to get. Tracking out of the box is pretty abysmal, but if you already have or are willing to invest into lighthouse basestations you can use Vive/Index controllers without too much hassle.

  • Which is better VR for DCS?

  • It does not support RX570.

  • +1

Even better, $820 if you are new to afterpay and use the $30 referrer bonus! (I just signed up and got it, $819.99 total) Utterly mad price

Someone mentioned $600 limit in the other afterpay thread, but it doesn't matter, you just need to pay more up front (for this: $385 now, then 3 payments of $145)
