    Shame it’s not100% merino

    • True…

Unfortunatelly, it is now hard to find 100% Merino. Even Icebreaker or expensive brands are blending and still calling it "Merino shirt"…

    • +5

The blend is probably to help stop it developing holes the way merino commonly does. I've given up on merino gear after every single one I've bought getting small holes in six months or less. Very annoying for an otherwise excellent material.

      • Have you only had that happen to Kathmandu ones, or from other brands as well?

        • +2

Not the guy you asked the question of but I can speak for using Icebreaker pure merino shirts as well as Macpac shirts and underwear. Every single item had holes a plenty within the year. I'm definitely keen for a little something blended in IF it makes it stronger. I've bought myself one of these to find out.

@sleepingtiger: damn really? I bought some from the UK several years ago but packed them away and havent used them yet barring one and i noticed after a while it got a couple of holes, i figured i must have damaged it or maybe washed it wrong or something. I didnt realise this…whats the point of them then, they are so pricey too.

@lonewolf: My experience doesn't mean it's going to be the same for everyone else. I did use all the garments a lot! It's just that the longevity is not at the same level as other fabrics. What's the point of them? For me, their positive properties were worth it. Lack of smell and ability to work in different temperatures made it perfect travel wear. The underwear was also ridiculously soft and comfortable for me, so again….worth it. Wish it lasted longer, wish it was cheaper but here we are.

          • @sleepingtiger: Thanks :) I've got a few of the Kathmandu tops and one of them has the holes in it and I was a bit suspect on buying more from them and considered trying another brand.

It's a shame if it's common as the tops are great and from a functionality perspective they're really versatile.

      • You sure its not from the little bugs that eat wool? Once I started storing wool items in sealed bags over warmer weather this stopped happening. I have actually caught the little buggers in action.

        • +1

Definitely not. Have a search for "merino holes" and you'll see it's a well known problem. Apparently it's due to the short fibre length of the wool. I've had several different brands, starting with IceBreaker (massively over-priced given their lack of longevity).

          • @banana365: Just found this article where the clothing manufacturer tries to claim it's a good thing that they develop holes - https://iomerino.com/blogs/the-adventure-zone/the-hole-truth

            What an arse.

            • @banana365: I read the article. I can sort of understand the sentiment and in a way it's a pretty positive way to look at it all. With that said, I'm not really on board with it though because I don't actually want to walk around looking disheveled wearing my holey clothes like a badge of honor. Couldn't work out if the author is a part of the company though because that doesn't help the authenticity of what's he's saying if he is.

      • Yep. Same. Every long sleeved shirt gets holes in the elbows for me. Ive probs got Bony elbows, but yeah. Only the merino LS.

  • I get $20 vouchers from kathmandu occasionally which would make it the same price to buy from them directly as this deal. Sadly the last one expired a couple of weeks ago, i never even looked at the store.

  • What's the benefit of merino wool over cotton?

    • Cotton's only real benefit is that it's cheap. Merino is used for a lot of active and outdoor purposes because of its breathability and quick-drying properties (easily absorbs and evaporates moisture, making it more comfortable in sweat or rain, and prevents the wind from sucking out all of your body heat). Also doesn't hold sweat/body odour as strongly.

For every day purposes though cotton clothing will do just fine.

  • Do these stretch along the length like the Heattech ones from uniqlo?
