Masterbuilt Gravity Series 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker $999 (Save $300) + Delivery ($0 in-Store/ C&C) @ Barbeques Galore

A mate has recently purchased this and swears by it. I currently use a cheap pellet grill and am seriously considering this upgrade. It has the ease of a pellet grill, but with the charcoal flavour.

Great for smoking. Set and forget at whatever temperature you like.
Not ideal if you're lazy and don't ever clean it and therefore have flare ups that melt switches when you set the grill to highest temp for searing.

TLDR - Great smoker, keep it clean, no mods needed.

    • Switches have been fixed with later model I believe.

Main mods I'm looking at are the front shelf, and slide over for the rear vents

      • The new switches are metal? Thats good if so. Front shelf would be handy. Rear vents maybe, I stuffed foil in there once to restrict airflow. Then the foil fell out a few cooks later, can't say I noticed any difference.

Would definitely suggest making a mod to make the gaps in the grate that sits in the hopper smaller. Briquettes can almost fit through the gaps from factory. I did this by cutting a cake cooling rack and feeding the spokes through to block the gaps
I'm very happy with how this cooks food and the flavour you get out of it, I just wish the price was anywhere near what Americans can get this for. I had the paint in the hopper peeling off it pretty early into owning mine and that hasn't turned into any holes yet but for something that costs $1000 you'd expect more. This is very cheap in America and the price we pay here is garbage in comparison but I don't regret buying it

      • The paint is meant to peel off and the metal inside the firebox burn off to expose the "fire brick" that surrounds the hopper, according the the masterbuilt website anyway.
I didn't bother with the grate mod, use mostly lump which can't fit between the gaps

  • Was just looking at it yesterday! Would be great to hear from fellow Ozbargainers who own one…

As mentioned my mate loves it. Only problem he has found so far is the app does not run in the background on ioS. (The app is not listed in the background app refresh section) So, you will not get temp alerts unless you have the app on screen. This has been reported and I'm sure will be fixed, however it is an issue currently for iPhone users.

Plenty of custom mods available for it too: https://klotesmods.com/

  • Don't forget gift cards for an extra discount :)

    • Just put that in the OP :)

  • $500 rrp in US guess we get hit with covid tax $1299 rrp here

Yep we get bent over with grills from the States. Weber Smokfire is $800 USD ($1060 AUD) in the States, yet here it is $2k

normally pellet grills costs more because the pellet auger needs to spin the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere,
Not sure what this ones excuse is :)

      • It's gravity fed, gravity is lighter in the southern hemisphere so the BBQ's gotta work harder.

  • biggest concern is how long the electrics will last and so its overall robustness.

Also how much fuel it would possibly use. otherwise looks like a great dual use home grill/smoker for the price.

  • Had mine since September. Use it regularly, much more so than my previous Kamado style grill, because of how quick and easy it is to get going, and it's pretty much set and forget.

Definitely uses more fuel than the Kamado, but I'm ok with the trade off.

Plenty of smoke flavour, more so than I've had from any pellet grill.

Mods aren't necessary, just keep it clean. The manifold cover does help keep excess fat out though, so I use that.

Would like the next size up (800) but really don't need it - can fit a large brisket without issue on one shelf, and still have 2 shelves of space to spare, so can easily feed a large crowd.

    Overall very happy.

My friend owns both this and a Traeger pellet.

    So far:

Unimpressed with build quality. Doesn't expect it to last more than 5 years. Warranty is only 1 year.
Fire has gone out on him on a few cooks.
All the USA peeps have been paying a fair bit of money on mods to rectify build issues.
Fire can take a bit of time to get lit and up to temp.
Chews through fuel. Not cheap to run.
    Switch failures are commonly reported.
If you don't have a protected and covered area to cook, modding the vent at the rear is a near necessity.

Based on that I bought a Pellet Grill (Pit Boss) with a 5 year warranty and a smoker tube for extra smoke. Absolutely in love with it.

    • What Pit Boss did you get?

      • I bought the 850G. 1000% worth it for the broiler. It's awesome for steaks and reverse searing.

    • Thanks for the update. I've got a Traegar pro and it's not bad but I've been eyeing this for quite some time because I like the Charcoal flavor. Might wait for the next revision when they iron out all the issues.

      • Adding a smoker tube gets you pretty close.

      • I am in the same boat as you mate. I a Traeger pro 22 but the only reason why I am looking at an update is the price of pellets is insane. I used to buy a 9kg bag for $25 and sometimes with deals you can get it as low as $21. I used to have no issues setting it to high for a bbq, even if it burns through a half bag of pellets. Now, three years later and I cannot find anyone but bbqsga'rape for $40. It is only economical for a low and slow cook.

This looks to be a good option for the long run as I dont see pellet prices coming down anytime soon.
