  • Dupe buddy

  • I’d highly recommend unifi but after just getting the WiFi 6 LR it really blows my old stuff out of the water.

Worth the extra money (mind you it’s 3x the price) unless your wired up to put 3 units in key locations.

just bought this AP to find out that (unlike older ubiquity APs) this one does not have a web interface and setup process is really screwed unless you are willing to install their software + java (wow). and no easy way to return it. /me sad.

That's the unified system, and the same for all other pro-super systems (Aruba Instant and Meraki being the other major players).

You just run unifi controller when you need it, or you can install it on a pi to access it whenever you want. The UDM range have one built it.

I use the UDM with two APs and it's super easy to manage.

      • how to install it on a pi? I could not find any package for arm.

You can set it up from the phone app.

      • yeah, this is a good joke. The app says it is wants bluetooth but neither the app nor the AP actually uses it. Instead the AP wants to be connected to the network and when I did so - it flooded the network so hard that my phone disconnected from an old AP (reconnected quickly though) and the ssh session to the gateway from my laptop got very flaky for a minute or so.

Of course, when I tried later the "unifi network" app (in linux/docker or windows7) - it could not see the AP and show settings (ssh to the AP and doing "set-inform" did nothing - the AP did not bother sending anything according to tcpdump), I had to reset the AP to defaults and repeat the process with the app, and this of course involved "set-inform" again.

And a cherry on top - ssh to the AP was working (ubnt/ubnt) until I "adopted" it via the desktop app. Now it does not accept any password at all. Reset again? Enterprise quality.

oh. even cannot login to the AP from the phone app anymore. brilliant.

update: found how to set the password in unifi app. and even ssh key. and of course ssh-ed25519 is not supported. 2021!

        • Sounds like you had a bad time - I haven’t had or heard any similar issues like that. The docker approach isn’t the official method.

Adoption forces a trust relationship between the controller and the AP, which is a security feature to avoid literally anyone on your network from messing around with setting using the default credentials.

        • Thanks for the update. Not heard of anyone having that much trouble before so worth my bearing in mind for future advice. Cheers.

          • @zfa: for the first 15 minutes I was resetting the AP and waiting for it to show up in the network list on my phone, then I started googling what the heck :)

If you have a smartphone you can use the app without the controller

If you don't want it, I'll buy it from you for $50. :)

      • now I wonder if all APs are this way these days. looks like every single hw vendor wants to push own cloud out.

      • I almost packed it for refund or sale but then I figured how to put openwrt on it, now I quite like this piece of hardware :)

  • Save up for the WiFi 6 version, well worth it

  • Thanks op. Been looking for something to reach my shed cameras about 30 plus metres away.
Just switched to 5g hotspot on phone from 4g in router, Does anyone know if can run this AP directly from a hotspot on a phone? Thanks in advance.

Thanks bdl for quick reply. I was hoping it could but at least I know not to get this. Cheers.
