Engine Oil - Which Is Suitable and Good for Nissan Pulsar?

Am a noob when it comes to changing oil and engine oils and have the following 3 questions:

  1. Is Gulf Western a good engine oil? Specifically the Synx 3000 10w-40

  2. How do Repco and supercheap deem a part suitable for each car and which one is more accurate? One site says the above oil. Fits my car and the other says it doesn't but the manual says 10w-40 is fine.

  3. Is Castrol Magnatec any good (or at least better than the Gulf Western Synx 3000)? Is it true it leads to increased sludge formation and doesn't change well on oil changes?

TIA for any help :)

    Car make and model?

If you're driving anything that resembles a camry, stop reading online and buy any 10w-40.

if you're driving a V8 or engine thats running turbos and putting out 500HP at 7,000RPM maybe you're probably justified in caring more.

It's a Nissan pulsar. Yh you're right I shouldn't care as it's old and far from a high end sports car but was just curious/am learning to maintain own rubbish car before I upgrade

Where you live also has a factor as well. Min / Max temperature etc and probably more important than which brand you go with. Fully synthetic is usually better in all instances, so if you can justify the price, do it.

@Chocobros: same as mine (QG18DE engine), I just pay $80 for normal service including oil, oil filter, general checks and topping up etc. Don't worry too much about it, they are too old to be worried about.

    • Why wouldn't 5w-30 be the better choice if that's within spec?

Depends on the temps and how long old mate is driving for. If they live in a place that gets cold, or only do short drives 5w-30 would be better.

    http://www.gulfwestern.com.au/lube-desk/
Find your car and the oil manufacturer give their recommendations
    Penrite also have same system

    .

    • Thanks for this :)

Ever since castrol was acquired by BP the oils have had sludging issues. Gulf western is fine, it’s a west Australian company not an Anglo-American corporation.
Stick to nulon, penrite or gulf western for good oils and Australian owned.

For an older, standard, run of the mill Nissan Pulsar, just go in, pick the cheapest 10w40 they have on the shelf at Supercheap or Repco.

Also, you are over thinking it. If you are going to be doing your own regular oil changes, don’t worry about shit like “sludge” unless you plan on doing 100,000 km between oil changes.

    Anyway…

    1. Gulf Western is fine for a Nissan Pulsar.
    2. Always refer to the owners manual. Neither store is “more accurate” than the official factory manual
    3. Magnatec is ok, would work in your car. Better than GW? That’s subjective, as what really does “better” mean when talking about engine oils? The rest of that about “sludge” is bullshit and sounds like you’ve been reading too much marketing crap.
    • Thanks for the advice. Yup too much marketing crap. Will just get a 10w40 aus made oil and not look back

Yeah just get whatever brand is cheapest, as long as its the correct weight for the engine.

Arguably it's better to get full synthetic over semi synthetic. But if you're changing regularly it probably won't make any difference.

I use the SynX 3000 in my motorcycle as its cheap and a lot of online sources say it meet the JASO-MA standard for bikes.

just buy the Woolworth crap recycled oil the oil is worth as much as the car if you buy brand name

  • qg18de like most std. pfi low comp. nissan motors will use whatever general quality oil of the correct spec given normal city cycles

my car has the qr25de and they just eat anything, they are not a highly stressed motor so GW or Magnatec or anything of a reputable brand especually if you do the std. 10,000km service interval

I honestly dont know and dont care what it uses since it appears as a $20 item in my yearly service thing the mechanic does

    google says this:

    Recommended engine oil
    5W-30
    5W-40
    10W-30
    10W-40

    which is common as muck

  • Any oil will do

    • Avocado supposedly has a high smoke point, but apparently consumption of avocados are especially bad for the environment.
