Phishing isn't a new scam. It's the same shit with a slightly different look.

More power to OP for having the courtesy to warn others of this scam

    Thanks. Good to know.

We just did a spring winter clean last w/e & my husband suggested selling some of the items on facebook marketplace & gumtree. My thoughts are from reading all of the scummy scams on here is that no one has time for all that could be involved with that so Vinnies is the way to go.

Join your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook, people will come and collect your unwanted stuff from your front door step. Saves you a drive to drop stuff off at vinnies.

      • Ahhh - also good to know. Thank you!

Maybe give Facebook marketplace a go for selling unwanted items . I have been selling for years on there and i don't get any scams on there

      • You must be the fb marketplace unicorn 😉

I think his suggestion is due to lockdown boredom & novelty will wear off quickly if he gets more than one dreaded low ball offer or time wasters.

      • Just to add, I've been on the marketplace for a long time. Pretty much for low value items. Stuff that I would either bring to the op shop, or even stuff that I would just bin. Many listings I've had were for <$5 or for free.

Yes, I've had quite a few low ballers for some of the items that were a bit more valuable, but by and large, my experiences have been positive. Especially for the items that would have gone to the tip anyway. At least this way, I didn't have to haul them myself, and also, something that I might not have use for but is still in good nick might be helpful for someone else. Kinda like the freebie pages on craigslist from way back when.

      • Beware if you start selling items of value, especially iphones or ipads, you'd be inundated by thiefs and scammers who will ask you to deliver and send you fake bank transfer receipt or even try to run away with the phone while "they're looking at it for cracks or marks".

  • That heading, "Safe Deal" 🤣

Slightly related.. but was meant to meet up with someone today as I was selling something. Now it was no harm to me as the place we were meeting I had to be there, but the mofo didn’t turn up. Messaged him asking where he was, and he said “haha, I was just messing with you. I don’t even want your item”

What sort of dumb mofo does this?!

    • I never agree to meet up somewhere or deliver to anyone because of this . I only do pick up at my house or work

Finding a genuine buyer on gumtree has become like finding a needle in a hay stack

If you've got his facebook profile, see what else you can find out about him through Google.. and then work your magic!

Or register his phone number on a million sites and don't even hint that it was you (wouldn't want him doing it back!)

Wait two months before doing it, he/she probably does it to many people
        .

    • what item was it?

      • Just some clothing

    Gumtree = cash only.

    • I have posted items on gumtree when paid with paypal . No issues so far . But for pickup i dont accept paypal only cash

      • yeh ive done bank transfer and paypal always wait for cleared funds before posting. Otherwise as above always cash on pick up otherwise.

    • I have always done cash only on gumtree and no problems.

  • Ha..just got this scam coming thru..using the name of "safe deal"(yeah right!!)..after posting item in gumtree..

  • I just posted on gumtree about 1 hr ago and within 5 minutes of posting I got 3 different people reach out to me, all through whatsapp, 2 with whatsapp business accounts, all claiming they would like to buy, but can't pick up. They want to use AusPost delivery service for payment and shipment. It just seemed too coincidental that they all reached out immediately after posting, none of them contacting me through Gumtree, all needing it to be piced up and shipped. I'd say, it's not worth the risk. Most likely a phishing scam.

    • Yes, it's a scam. First time it happened to me I was actually curious how it works so I went along with it. Led the guy to believe I was OK with the terms, he then sent me a bogus link to collect my payment. It sends you to a dodgy portal that asks for your credit card information so the funds can be credit to you (lol).

As with any scam, it's obviously targeted towards the lowest form of human intelligence, which is sad. Many people, especially boomers, would fall for this because they don't know any better.

  • Yeah seen this scammer around a few times hope no one gets him. alias by the name of Alex Mitchell using the same auspost safe scam off of gumtree. Don’t know how to report him.

    • Haha - literally had this exact person reply to my gumtree ad, I even found this post by searching that same number!

  • Glad I checked for this as a possible scam when I got several WhatsApp messages for an item I just posted on Gumtree. Thanks for everyone for sharing. The scammer is now madly trying to get me to ‘fill in a form at a link they have sent to me so the courier can come and collect my item to deliver to them in Bathurst’

  • I have just had this happen to me trying to sell a commercial oven on gumtree. She said her name was Brenda, contacted me on whatsapp after asking for my email. Phone number on whatsapp is 0422 014 255, user name on gumtree was ellagen. Tried to get me to go through australia post 'secure trade'. When I said this doesnt sound legit, she said great then i'll pay for everything. Exactly the same thing in trying to get me to fill out a legitimate looking Australia Post form from a link that ends in asking for your credit card details for 'immediate payment'. When I eventually told her she was a thief and did people often fall for this she replied with yep ahaha. Holy wow. I may have told her to go do something not very nice to herself, lol. She also thought that was funny.
It's an obvious scam to most, but I'm saddened to think that some would go ahead and give these people their details.

    • You reckon the scam is conducted in Australia? I don't leave my mobile on Gumtree. Only communicate via gumtree message to save myself the headache.

      • I doubt its here in Australia, the english is not quite right, some wording is just a little bit off. They asked me for my email address immediately which is how they got to my whatsapp, I think? I didnt put my phone number on gum tree that I know of. This is the part that confuses me I have to say.

  • Thanks to this post and my 'bells' ringing, I almost got into the same scam. Posted an ad on gumtree, within minutes of going live the seller whatsapp me and went under the name Laura Wilson, 0416041078. Straight away offered Door-to-Door delivery via Auspost. Apparently, they pay via Auspost, they confirm the order, I receive payment, they send courier blah blah blah. The link they provide takes you to a fake Auspost.guard-deal.icu etc and asks for your credit card details to pay you. Then they followup asking if you've processed as they get nervous you'll figure out it's a scam. I told them as such, never heard from them again.

  • Posted a chair on gumtree today and within the first 15 minutes got three messages from different sellers, all telling me they can't pick up but can ship with Door to Door delivery via auspost. Reported two to whatsap. Not sure if anything gets done. The third one I didn't get far enough to be prompted to go to the website as I said with the first message that I only accept bank transfer or cash on pick up. Nothing after that.
