Hey guys, any advice on what rod to buy and other essentials for a complete novice? Planning to try out fishing with my kid. Are the Kmart ones good enough or should I buy branded ones such as this? Maybe out fishing once or twice a year.

  Fish don't care about good much your requirement cost.
  If you're starting just get your cheap combo from Kmart, BCF or Anaconda.
  Afterwards you can research and find what type of fishing you enjoy and upgrade accordingly.

The K Mart ones are very good. If you intend to jetty fish then get the 6.6" combo @ $20.
I have seen the same brand model combo selling for 4x that price in other places..
