I'm looking to get a cheap roadworthy certificate in Melbourne. Believe Car just needs no work to be done to pass RWC. Have called a number of mechanics and the standard rate is about $200 for this service.
Does anyone know of any local mechanics that will do this service for cheaper?
If the car does fail the inspection, general rule is I have 7 days to fix the problems and have it re-tested. Do mechanics charge for the re-test or is this provided with the initial price?

My understanding is that RWCs are now standardised and there is little, if any, way to get a 'cheaper' RWC done.
When I last had one done, the site identified a couple of minor things (that were valid) and fixed them on the spot (with my approval) and then issued the RWC at no extra cost.
The quote of $200 seems reasonable to me.
Pretty much this. They're also now scrutinised more heavily by the state road authority, so prices are fairly standard and even less people willing to do dodgy ones.
Where in Melbourne did you get this service from?
Mechanics pay a pretty penny for their RWC endorsement. They ain't going to risk it for half a biscuit. Although there are still dodgy ones around it's nothing like the good ol' days.
$200 is the standard price..

In Melb - see if you can find a good Wog to help you out with a service or the likes at the same time.
It's like Sydney and pink slip - see the Leb's out west and they can sort you out with a service at the same time!
You will have 14 days to have the issues rectified. You don't have to get the RWC tester to do the work NOR do you have use to anyone he suggests ("I have a guy that does windscreens…")
Generally, you do not have to pay for reinspection as they usually just checking that the work that was outstanding has been done. After 14 days, if you fail to present the vehicle for reinspection, you will have to pay for the RWC again.
Once the RWC has passed, it will remain valid for 30 days from date of issue.
