Receiving Calls from Similar Number to Mine

Anyone else receiving phone calls from numbers that are similar to that of their own?

Example.
My number: 040555123
Numbers calling me seems to be all the same except for the last 3 digits.
Example: 040555222 or 040555111 or 040555333

I simply blocked them but my wife just told me she is also receiving similar calls.

Anyone else?

  • Was your sim registered with an ID or was it pre activated? Could just be the provider trying to find sim cards that are no longer in service.

  • Known scam.
You might get texts from people saying that your called or texted them.

    • I've seen that before too, how exactly does the scam work though?

      • Basically a software that cycles numbers for the ATO or Chinese Govt scam.

  • Scammers make calls using spoofed numbers and it's just your turn.

After a couple of weeks they'll dump calling your number and move on.

They often choose numbers close to their victims so they think it's a local call from a friend/business contact etc.

There have been times when the scammers have even used the victim's own number to call them.

There's a few threads about it on Whirlpool if you're interested.

    • This happened to me recently, being called by a number one digit off mine. Was wondering what it was, I called the number back and the person said they had not called me at all and weren't sure what it could be. Thanks for the info.

This happened to me, in reverse, a couple of weeks ago. A woman had been called by my number that morning, and was returning my call, except I hadn't made any outgoing calls for days. She was very angry that I refused to admit to calling her. Her phone number was one digit away from mine.

  • Getting them multiple times a day recently. Last two digits different only.

  • Interesting. I received several robo calls today from a series of numbers similar to my own. I just blocked them. Then I got the robo call from my own number 🤯. Contacted Telstra but they’re useless. I’d feel better if I thought they had only used my number to call me… but I guess that’s not the case.

  • Merged from Weird coincidence, a prank or something more sinister?

So a couple of days ago I received a call from a number that was eerily similar to my mobile number except for the last two digits.

When I answered the call, it was a younger guy (maybe in his 20s), who said he had a missed call from my number on his phone and he was returning my call. The weird thing is I never called the guy. I told him I didn't call him and he seemed a bit annoyed and insisted that there was a missed call from me. I again told him I didn't and he asked me if I was a police officer. Which I am not, so I replied no. That was the end of the conversation.

Just to be sure, I went through my recent call logs on my phone to make sure there wasn't some glitch where it accidently dialled his number or something and there was nothing.

Has anyone had any similar experiences like this and could shed any light on it? Could it be some sort of glitch with my Telco (I'm with Telstra)? A prank? Something more sinister going around that I'm not aware of?

Common scam of late. Just ignore them. They eventually go away.

How is scammer trying to profit?

Who knows. Who cares. Just ignore them.

Just ignore it, block the number if you don't feel safe.

Pretty sure there was a forum post on here about this within the last month or so. Has happened to me and my wife in the last couple of months.
