    I am on sale 😝

    • +1

      Happy 90th!

  • +2

Lowest seems to be around $160

    • +2

You mean historically? Or are you saying it is on sale somewhere else for that price?

      • +3

Historic. I bought it for $165 Nov 2019.

Also this set is complete except the Congo one

        • +2

Historic. I bought it for $165 Nov 2019.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. Hasn’t been that low for ages!

        • +1

also missing Tin Tin in the Land of the Soviets

  • Has anyone seen this available locally in any stores?

I was hoping that Big W would get it in stock as they tend to have pretty decent discounts of the RRP.

    • +1

RRP is supposedly around $330, so not sure this is the sort of title BigW would normally carry?

      • +2

I've seen similar boxed sets like the complete Harry Pothead for example, not sure what the RRP of those were though….

  • -6

Now that I think about it, some of the Tintin illustrations were quite racist. Oh well, still good memories!

    • +10

That's why TinTin in The Congo isn't included.

    • -2

There is nothing racist in the book
Lucky my regional library stocks it

    • +2

      Another reason to buy! Thanks!

  • +6

I just read the Criticisms on Tintin in the Congo and I can see why it was removed.

    • +4

You should get your hands on a copy and read through it. It’s pretty shocking by today’s standards. Guess the world was different back then.

      • Definitely worth picking up. It comes with a warning label stating how it’s a product of its time etc

      • +3

Well, the history of it is pretty fascinating. Even at the time there were a fair few sources that considered it racist.

Remember this was only about 12 years after Leopold 2's atrocities in the Congo were brought to light.

    • -1

Wait so Congo isn’t actually full of white people doing blackface?

      • +1

Just pointing out that this isn’t what Congolese people or anyone that isn’t a white person doing blackface actually looks like

        • +2

Yeah… I'd want that maybe for completion's sake.

That said I'd not give it to any kids to read as a Tintin story.

As a historical example of racism… yeah but not as a story.

        • -2

          Its a comic book.

            • @Ryballs: Not too sure how he is a slave from that picture, it seems like an awful stereotype from that day though.

I just looked it up, Steamboat Bill was his valet and his sidekick. Steamboat was to help appeal to black Americans but instead they hated the awful stereotype and it was cut out within a couple of years.

            • @Ryballs: wait - captain marvel is male?

              • @Jimb000: There’s marvel’s captain marvel a.k.a Captain marvel (2019) and dc’s captain marvel a.k.a Shazaam (2019)

  • This is the full sized set right? Can't really tell from the images or description

    • +2

Yeah it is mate, I own it

  • +1

$7.95 postage for Booktopia and it doesn't seem to allow their current 10% discount - any way around these?

    • Good point re: shipping. Have updated the post accordingly.

      • Also enabling the Qantas FF tracker will cause Cash Rewards to disable itself. Does anyone know if reenabling CR will then cause the FF tracker to disable?

EDIT: I see you meant collect FF through Booktopia's own site, not through FF's tracker. Still keen to know the answer for buying on other sites where Qantas FF tracker works!

        • Yeah, technically you can double dip on QFF + Cashrewards at Booktopia; triple dip if you’re using a points earning CC. Makes this title around $4 more expensive vs Amazon, so only worth it if you’re specifically chasing those FF points and don’t mind waiting for stock to come in.

      • -5

Can you post it when its $29.99 as that about the right price for this ?

  • +1

    Congo is the best

    • +12

      Thanks! :-)

      • Mbote! Sango nini!

  • +3

    Should be a Tin set

    • +1

A Tintin tin box set? Sounds tinny.

  • +1

    Blistering barnacles!

    • +1

      Ten thousand thundering typhoons!

      • You Bashi Bazouk!

  • -6

    No Congo No Deal

    • +10

      Huh? Did you call?

      • There's another guy below looking for ya…

  • +3

Ok, so have found Booktopia is running a 10% off only for today offer with 07NEW1003. It was a banner at the top that bizarrely kept disappearing and occasionally switches to a "free shipping for today only" banner. The banner also doesn't seem to appear once you're signed into the account.

The 07NEW1003 code will likely invalidate cash backs as it's not a code approved by either site, and you need to pay Booktopia's $7.95 shipping, but at least you get 180 FF points (enter on your Booktopia account, not the separate QFF tracker) and it comes down to $187.91.

    • +3

@CamM you did the work on this so leave it to you to edit the post? Not sure what the ethics and protocols are around this stuff but seems unnecessary to post about the same product on the same day.

      • +1

Nice find! I’ve updated the post based on guidance from the Mods and credited you accordingly.

        • +1

All good. I never would have gone to Booktopia today and found that code if you hadn't mentioned them in your post. OzBargain tag team FTW

  • -3

    No Congo No Buy

  • +1

No deal without Tin Tin in Viet Nam.

    • Available only in T-shirt form.

      • Nope, T-shirt, poster, picture, teapot etc. etc.

  • I read a few of these (along with Asterix and Obelix) back in my innocent days. Serious question: Why is this box set so expensive? (RRP $330)

  • Should i be ordering this Set or Chasing Down an older Set ?

  • +2

Its technically not complete without the super rare Tintin in Thailand!

    • Not sure how official that book is haha!

    • Bud E. Weyser ≠ Hergé

      • No, it was Hergé beer of choice!

  • +3

Also BUPA10 code works for BUPA (Plus) members. Same 10% discount on Booktopia

    • +1

      Nice find, Thanks!

    • +1

      Cheers! Updated the post accordingly.

  • I wonder why these books are so expensive.

    • +1

Because they are in demand , same reason why a movie star is paid in millions or the Da vinci post it sized sketch sold for 12 million. Consumers create the pricing

    • Less than $10 per book. And they are a treasure for generations.

  • I got a yearning today to relive my youth and bought this boxset.

FYI today, it's $293 at booktopia Sept delivery, $202 at Amazon July delivery, bought from the latter.
