Returning Same Item for Different Order

G'day all,

I have bought two indoor exercise trainers at the same store, the first at essentially full price and the second at a significant price difference ($400 less). I've opened one but not the second cheaper one, the shop has a generous return policy.

How likely am I able to return the unopened second cheaper as the first order? Will serials need to match the order etc?

Gonna give it a go anyway but happy to hear any experiences!

Cheers,

EDM

Indoor exercise trainers as in shoes ?

    • Nah, my bad. It's an indoor bike trainer that you attach your bicycle to do indoor workouts on.

What matters in most cases is the barcode on the packaging. Shops generally scan the barcode when processing a return and check if it is the same item listed on your receipt. If the numbers underneath the barcode on both packages are the same (they should be if they are two identical products manufactured by the same company), you should be able to return the unopened package.

Depends too if they track serial number as well

    • Cheers, I will have a look at the boxes and see if it can be done!

I think the bigger issue here is that an OzBargain member bought something at full price, which clearly goes on sale for $400 off. See yourself out OP.

    • There’s a business opportunity here for a OzFullPrice.com.au

    • Haha! I would agree but I've never seen this item on OzBargain or on sale before (it's in and out of stock all the time) and bike gear is only getting more expensive!

      • Might not have been on sale since before 2020, when exercise gear was flying off the shelves.

If anything good has come out of COVID its the amount of people that took up exercising, even if most were only doing it out of some weird spite.

I've always been on the lookout for a nice trainer at a cheaper price but COVID only made things worse. I agree the more people that ride the better, although I do hope it brings with it improved infrastructure!

It's partly the reason I'm moving indoors. The amount of inexperienced riders has put me off, had two bike riders panic and go straight for me in the past couple months - both times I ended up in hospital.

@EDM: Ouch, hope you sustained no permanent injuries.

Yeah I've seen a lot of stupid crap lately. More runners with earphones in, completely oblivious to the world running in front of people/cyclists/cars/etc. Cyclists with fancy new >$1k bikes with no bloody idea how to ride, though it was funny watching one (profanity) weaving between people quite dangerously go and eat shit because while flipping someone off he slipped and turned his front wheel all the way at speed.

@AdosHouse: Thank you, I'm luckily all good, especially given the circumstances. Have had worse crashes! Dangerous sport haha

I've seen way too many near misses recently.. I had to avoid the bike paths during lockdown it was just too busy and scary, far safer on the roads then but now the traffic is back and I'm having to make a tough choice.

  • Welcome to OzESP….

My crystal ball guesses the shops name, and also guesses their answer….

    • I don't follow.. what's your guess?

      • He's saying you didn't provide enough information.

Does your sales receipt even mention a serial number?

    • +2

      Nope….

But that's not going to stop some people from asking on OzBargain…

      • +1

I guess some people clearly have nothing better to do, eh?

      • You mean people actually have Angel and Devils provoking them into action like this?

    • +1

I don't see how this prevents them from having checks/balances in the back-end…

Atleast give us a shop's name… I know for a fact that most stuff on Decathlon is serialized, so you can't return the same item for a different receipt, while Kmart, I am pretty sure, doesn't serialize anything that is coming from their own brand so you can easily do your refund "strategy".

I'm trying to stay ambiguous and I'm just after general experiences with such a method. Thank you for your experience.

Are they on separate receipts? And are the same product?
If so, don't mention you bought it twice AT ALL (clearly).
I can't imagine it would matter if it's not something like a laptop or smartphone etc (things that have serials that are registered).
Is it a fancy one with electronics (idk what an indoor exercise trainer is..), because if you make a warranty claim, for electronic items you will most likely need to give the serial etc - and not sure if that will get messy ?

    • Appreciate the response, thank you. Yeah same product on two separate orders.
It's got electrical components to it but I'm not sure if it is a registrable product. Will see how I go, worst case I can sell the second one for more than I got it for.

      • Maybe lookup the warranty claim process for the product and if they ask you for a serial to do so.
This may not imply you can't return the other serial, but it might be an issue if you do need to do any warranty claims.

Also if the serial is important, it will probably be on the receipt itself.

    Give it a go

I've purchased a full price product in the past only to have it go on sale a week later. So I've purchased a 2nd one on sale and then returned the brand new one using the original full price receipt. Nothing wrong with this, its not as if the 2nd one was suddenly inferior and that's why it was on sale. Serial numbers on receipts is usually limited to tv's, laptops and other electronic goods.
Change of mind refund is exactly that ….. in this case you changed your mind after seeing it cheaper.

  • It depends upon the sale date and your docket date.

They are not stupid people… they are in business and are alert to scams like you are trying to pull.

People are having it tough enough, and you want to rip-off this business, and possibly cause employees the loss of their employment in the process.

    • Both items were bought within the last two weeks, and the business is a major one. I don't think they will be hurting during the current bike craze.

I will say that I thought about approaching the business in terms of receiving a partial refund for missing a sale by a few days but it's only due to a few factors that I'm able to access the price at such a discount. I didn't want to risk missing it.

  • No problem whatsoever as they are exactly the same item
You have the right to keep the cheapest one, whichever you choose

  • What trainer did you buy?

  • +1

So what happened? Did you get your 400 dollarydoos back? Or are you stuck with two trainers? I hate unresolved posts. LOL

    • I'm in lockdown at the moment… will provide an update as soon as I can.

    • I hate unresolved posts.

Thats pretty much like every post here….
