Defense grid is an absolute golden classic of the TD genre. Not like the rubbish mobile crap you get these days where you can't make a tower maze and have to spam player activated powers all over the place.

    • +7

      Bloons is always good.

    • +2

I put 50 hours into the base game, it was great. I now realise there's a bunch of expansions I've never played, might jump back in if they're free or on special.

      • +2

The DLC is 5 bucks, jumped on it. There an official expansion with Glados from Portal??

        • +2

This. The DLCs add tons of maps that immensely expand the game.

Yep, You Monster features Glados from Portal. Digital passive aggressiveness at its finest.

        • +1

Thanks! I've added this to my wish list. Glados is one of my favourite game characters.

    • +1

I think I tried it once but I still prefer TDs that let you build towers anywhere on the map. Building double spirals is fun. Played GemTD quite a lot in SC2 (and to a much lesser extent, Poker Defense).

    • +1

tower defense games are pretty horrible nowdays, making a maze was half the fun
i havnt seen a tower defense game that you can make a maze for a few years now

DG is great. The sequel not so much. Many many hours of interesting fun to be had.

    • Sunk many hours into DG1 and DG2. The DLCs are a must.

Sadly I've completely played through the games and maps. What other games are similar to DG?

      • Noen I have ever found. Love these games.

    • +1

Agreed. The sequel just didn't do it for me, no idea why. But i very much enjoyed dg1, especially the narrator / ai.

I always wanted to try Verdun, and now I can try it for free!

Heard it’s the real WW1 experience - you spend most of your time in the trenches and when you stick your head out, you get shot.

    • +7

Here's hoping it's as much fun as the real thing! :D

    • +1

The multiplayer aspect was dead the last time I played it, although that was some years ago so might have sprung up since then?

It was an intense FPS shooter in a surreal setting. It ebbs and flows with defense and attack timers so have to be aggressive one minute then bunker down the next. I would still play it tbh.

      • +3

I guess making it free is a good way to get an influx of new players to revitalise it, at least temporarily.

Can’t recommend defense grid enough. Picked this up in EPIC’s 2020 Christmas giveaway and was actually playing it the other week. The only thing that’s still not clear to me is the command tower… is this only beneficial where aliens die in the radius of the tower. If this occurs, you get a bonus to your resources?

    • +3

Got it in one, but also has an added bonus of exposing stealthed units within it's radius as well iirc.

  • Nice. Epic is adding a new game and a repeat again this week. For those who may have previously missed getting it. Verdun is new but Defense Grid: The Awakening was a previous free Epic giveaway back in December 2020.

  • +4

What a time to be alive. The quantity of free content is staggering.

    • +9

Yeah… I counted my Epic library the other day. Over 160 games and I didn't pay a cent for a single one. Although I think I've only actually played 1 or 2 of them so far :P

Epic store is my gaming superannuation - I put a little bit in there each week, then one day when I'm old and not working and have a lot more free time but can't afford new games anymore, I'll start drawing down what I've saved :P

      • +2

That's assuming they're still around. Unfortunately DRM means most of these games won't work as soon as Epic disappears.

        • -2

          Epic disappears.

Yeah, that isn't going to happen bud.

          • @adamshere: because companies can't go bankrupt, taken over, change of business direction. yep no need to worry, don't even give it a second thought, don't even mention it, just hand over your money.

            • @healsdoihasdi: I remember when Steam was first becoming popular and people had the same view.

Epic is not going away. If they ever do I will Payid you 2k

        • +1

Well in that case I guess I'll lose my investment of $0. But with the amount of money they've got, and the firm grip they've got on much of the gaming industry with Unreal Engine, I doubt they'll be disappearing anytime soon.

        • A lot of the games you can play without online authentication with legendary, so basically no DRM.

  • Now I just need to remember.
I see it also runs in MAcOS. Interesting if it will run on a RX580 8GB?

  • +1

Defense grid is the best TD ever made

    • +1

Agree 10000% And the sequel. Never found anything like them. Have been looking for a TD game that lets you manipulate paths and the two DG games are the only ones.

      • I got into kingdom rush as well which is a pretty fun one with heaps of sequels.

  • Just gave Verdun a download this morning, no Aussie servers.

US, Europe or Asia only. Played two games with 260 ping in both, shots weren't registering due to the lag. I'll try the other servers out tonight but it looks like a bust for me.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Taking ages to DL/Install BTW

    • Played fine for me, I was winning rifle deathmatch games so the ping can't be too bad.

      • Post what your ping is.

  • What's French for Retreat?

  • The game doesn't work for me, always launches into a white screen which I need to open Task Manager to kill

  • +2

Verdun is a good game from what I tried, but the problem is there are no AU servers, so you are stuck with either Asia or US servers… which both are like 200 ping.
    Good fun none the less.

  • This is great. I haven't played a fps in years.
Im impressed that its running on Macos on a Ryzen processor as well as it does. 32gb ram + a rx580.

Like other guys here im getting caned, but lots of fun.

  • Cheers!
