Tried to reserve one but appears to be unavailable in Australia. Bad move.

If it becomes available in Australia, would Nintendo Switch need to catch up, especially after that marginal upgrade and price hike?
I'm personally excited for this.

      • The GPD Win Max is amazing. Best purchase I've ever made. Having my PC library available anywhere I go has been incredible.

The Steam Deck looks like it'll be a nice bit of kit too.

      • +2

I agree, and glad to see a fellow who also likes these UMPCs.

Overall, I fanboy around GPD since they were making these for ages, back when everyone made fun of it. However, I'm really not a fan of the Win Max and Win Max 2… I see them as a netbook, and not as a handheld console. And the latest GPD Win 3 has let me down, simply for the fact that the touch-keyboard is unresponsive, and they decided to stick with Intel's SoC again. The SteamDeck fixes those issues, and is basically a cheaper/better version of the AYA Neo. Also the fact that Valve is releasing this shows that the Smach-Z was a scam all along.

        For those new or interested:
GPD XD: slightly below Xbox 360 graphics
GPD XD+: slightly below WiiU graphics
        GPD Win: roughly PS3 graphics
GPD Win 2: slightly above Switch graphics
GPD Win 3: slightly below XB1 graphics
Steam Deck: slightly below PS4-pro graphics
*obviously these are merely crude comparisons, it depends on the title, optimisations, and many other factors

    • Hard drive is changable, its an M.2 2230

  • +3

I managed to pre-order one within few mins of going live last night even after tons of server crashes. Looking really forward to it as a hybrid Windows/Steam machine. I always liked this form factor and used to have a Sony Vaio UX back in the day.

Really wish Sony were doing a new PSP/Vita like this instead of PSVR2…

    • How? I thought it wasn't available in Oz? Damn, I missed out big time then

      • +1

        UK address & Steam account.

    • +1

+1 for another portable from Sony. They really did the Vita dirty on long-term support…

Recently played through FF7 Remake entirely on the Vita with the incredibly comfortable HORI grip via PS4 remote play.

  • It's so much bigger and heavier than the Switch, especially the Switch Lite, at twice the price. I don't see how it can succeed. Even if you can pirate games on it or get console ports cheaper.

    • +4

They "sold" over 100k units in an hour or so. 512GB double other 2 combined. Also that's with majority unable to reserve till Sunday due to accounts not meeting criteria. I think it'll do fine.

Not the same market as the Switch and shouldn't really be cross-shopped. You either want first party Nintendo games or you want the Steam/Windows experience.

      • The Steam Box home console sold 500k before fizzling out.

        • I think the only way for it to be moderately successful is if valve commits to it and puts out first party games optimised for it. But I suspect that if they don’t it’ll fizz out like the steam box.

          • +1

@cheng2008: I don't think Valve really needs to anything outside of giving enough incentives for the developers to optimise the games on the Deck.
Or just have more games to run on Linux. Or make Proton work better with Windows game to run well on Linux.

If this thing can run emulators well enough, I think it opens up a huge libraries of games.
I enjoyed SSX3, playing it on the go (for me, likely just in the bedroom, lying down) would be fun.

I will laugh pretty hard at the irony if emulated BOTW runs better on this than on Switch.
Yes, I am still bitter that they didn't up the internals for OLED Switch, since I was hoping to upgrade my OG Switch.

    • I don't think it is competing with the switch though. More like when everyone had a wii and also a ps4 or xbox. It's competitors are similarly weighted and like twice the price. (I own the gpd win Max and the win 3…and also threw money at the vapourware smach z). There is also the aya neo and OXP. All 1k+, so the base model is quite tempting.

    • +2

The games library is massive compared to switch, also long run cheaper as games are far cheaper, also runs current PC games which switch does not, also is a computer which switch is not, also can do anything a computer does which switch you cannot, also doesn't use stupid drift con controllers, you could download media/movies/apps etc for plane too. You can also use this for game streaming services which switch cannot.

  • +5

This attracts a completely different audience to that of the switch. Different markets, no competition for Nintendo…

    • +1

Kind of. I do think some people who were waiting for the "Switch Pro" might be going for this instead

      • The switch even pro wouldn't have let you play pc games though? And unlikely to be patchable to allow you to install home-brew apps on it (not in the short term atleast)…

    • I'm looking at getting a handheld gaming platform, one is way more versatile and cheaper in the long run, the other is a switch.

      • +1

Exactly.. the switch is limited to maybe 11 games you'd (or gen pop) really play.. the other is a full pocket pc that'll do more more just gaming.. but even then can run multiple emulators as well as ability to run AAA games…

  • i think that they should bring back the steam link instead, i think that was a lot better and i missed out on the opportunity to get it for $19

    • +1

I got 3 Links.. great item.

      • Only 1080p though

  • +1

I'm impressed by the hardware, but it's not something I'd grab at full price; or even in the first hardware iteration.

Switch Lite has been my bed-time Picross machine, and it doesn't get much use outside of that as I've got a dedicated gaming PC.

Unfortunately Jupiter doesn't release Picross games on Steam, so understandably the new Valve hardware doesn't fill the incredibly niche use I have for something portable like the Switch.

  • Super interesting, seems like good alternative to mini PCs.

To compete with the Switch it would need a user base, how many can Valve realistically produce and sell? What pricing can we expect from other companies who won't be making money from software sales? GPD Win and Aya Neo prices? The Switch has sold 85 million units and is sill going strong.

If this sells really well and 3rd party sales starts increasing on PC while decreasing on Switch, maybe Nintendo will look at it when they're releasing the Switch Pro or 2. But it's Nintendo, I have a feeling any increases in performance will simply be a result of better technology rather than competition, and the performance we'll see will reflect that.

    • +2

They are for two different target markets, people buy the Nintendo switch for it's excellent exclusive games, not just because of it's unique hardware and 3rd party addons.

Maybe Valve should start making some family friendly games..

      Super Gordon Kart?
      Gaben Fit Adventure?
The Legend of Alyx: Breath of the Combine?

      • +1

Duoforce, since they cannot count to 3.

  • This is a big wait and see for me… Valve have a history of not supporting hardware and if anything I'd be holding out for either a drastic price reduction or a version 2 model.

    • This is just a PC though, what hardware do they need support for? You could just install your own distro or windows if they drop support

  • +3

I would buy one today if available today with an Australian warranty.

Instead, I ill wait for a refresh and most likely be over it by the time they have more practical storage for AAA games and a CPU/GPU cores released the same year.

  • Never jump on a bandwagon until the third generation. If in four years or so, this reaches that, then I'll see.

Personally, I don't actually see a lot of mobile playing time. Between a PC, a console and a phone, I'm not sure when I'd find the time to actually use it.

    • +1

The original switch is the only one that can be easily hacked, which makes it the best one

  • +1

Not sure why people are comparing this to this switch, you might as well compare it to a phone. Nintendo has exclusives (zelda, pokemon, mario etc) with so much nostalgia built behind these titles that no portable console can conceivably replace it, not even if the steam deck is 100x better specced. On top of that, while it's great that you can access your steam library, the vast majority of titles on steam aren't designed with portability and tiny screens in mind, therefore I believe it will flop/won't sell well.

    • +1

Not everyone buys games based on nostalgia, some look at the cost too. Having a competetion doesn't mean it is intended to replace the other product. I'm rooting that this pushes Switch for hardware improvement and price reduction (highly unlikely).

    • +1

It's a portable gaming device, of course people are going to compare it the Switch.
While the vast majority of Nintendo fans and casual gamers won't be interested in something like the Deck, someone looking for a portable gaming device might choose the Deck over the Switch

  • Hey, just wondering can we dock it to a monitor and plug in a controller or keyboard and mouse to game on. That would be pretty cool!

    • Yes, it is dockable but the dock is sold separately.

      • +6

You’re also not forced to buy Valve’s dock. You can use any USB-C dock.

  • Just can't understand who this is marketed toward.

It doesn't make much sense in a market with the new switch and x-cloud gaming.

    • Windows portable with inbuilt controls.

  • +3

The PC gaming market is huge, and there is currently no easy way to play your PC games on the go. The Steam Deck solves that.

I managed to secure a preorder, missed the 2021 allocation but got in the Q1 2022 lot. Q2 has already sold out as well.

This is the 'Switch Pro' I've been wanting. I travel alot for work so this is perfect for me since I already own a huge library of Steam games. The fact that you can easily emulate just about anything on it without going through hoops makes this even more enticing. I can play Mario Galaxy 2 on the Steam Deck but not the Nintendo Switch is enough to tell you that the Steam Deck is alot more consumer friendly than Switch.

Icing on the cake: this is a portable PC as well. Connect to monitor, hook up mouse & keyboard and you have a working PC wherever you are.

This is obviously not marketed to those who game at home. But I'm excited to play Fallout and Forza outside of my house.

  • -2

Has the potential to be Nintendo Switch killer if they position it correctly.

    • +1

Not a fan of the switch myself, but no this doesn't have potential to be a Switch killer, even if it becomes successful. It is more expensive, caters to a different segment of the market (PC gamers) and doesn't have the same ecosystem of games developed for handhelds. My bet is this will become the next Valve abandonware, time will tell. Basically it will be a Switch killer in exactly the same way Steam Box was a playstation/xbox killer.

      • To be fair, there are more PC gamers than switch gamers, also more games on steam are on mobile/ipad so they for sure are made to work on handhelds. Also since it's just a PC, it will last exactly as long as a PC.

        • -1

Very few of those published on steam are made for handhelds at all, nor do most PC gamers care about handlhelds or console gaming for that matter. I am sure there is a market for this, just not sure it will be big enough to survive from a vendor that doesn't have much to offer in the realms of exclusivity or must have features, especially when most of the games that already support modile gaming will be easier to just use your ios or android device.

          • @gromit: Nearly all the indie games on Nintendo Switch are from PC game ports, so really not sure what you are talking about here. Are you saying that most of the games on Switch are not made for handhelds either? Keep in mind, that this is a PC too, so you can dock it to your TV and continue to play games that way, your phone can't really do that at all.

Imagine playing Diablo 3 like you do on the switch - docked to a TV with two players, but not you can play at decent graphics and even diablo 4! Except no need for the terrible Nintendo controllers, you can use xbox/ps/steam controllers! My PC is 11 years old now, can barely play games, also have a second TV with no game console, so I'm super keen, as otherwise I was going to get a switch, but I am not into the kids style games you get on switch and phones

            • @onlinepred: The indie games are not the number 1 selling point for the Switch, it is Nintendo's games ecosystem. The problem with this device their is no compelling reason for the majority of gamers as they have alternatives already. This is Valves problem, same issue they faced with Steam Machines, no real reason for gamers to choose it over other options.

              • @gromit: I don't actually know any of my friends that play Nintendo games on the switch, and for me the only reason I was going to buy one was for mobile gaming with indie games. I think that side of the market won't be big, but shouldn't be misrepresented. I mean once Switch lets me play PC games on it with my own controllers, and a decent web browser, I would consider jumping in. Not everyone is a Nintendo game fan I guess. Sales of Switch has only just beat sales of PSP, so the market is there mate

                • @onlinepred: Yes there is a market, I just don't think it is big enough to sustain it. People said the same things about Steam Machines that your saying now and people like myself were idiots for saying it was too niche a market to succeed. Most PC gamers are not indie gamers, Most switch gamers are not indie gamers. I guess we shall wait and see, I am betting this will go the way of the Steam machines with initial hype which will die off very rapidly. Happy to be proven wrong as I don't do mobile gaming anyway and have no desire for a switch or a deck.

                  • +1

@gromit: Steam machines were just computers though. Not made by valve. Also I feel like you are just making biased generalised comments, like all people who like spaghetti own switches. You need to look up the top 50 selling games on steam. Most are handheld friendly, and after the top 10 most are indie games.

Anyway this has gone on too long. Peace out mate.

                    • @onlinepred: Fair enough.perhaps you might want to check out the top 20 switch games. Seems it will come as a shock to you. You seem to be the one that is making generalised statements in thinking enough pc gamers will also want an expensive handheld.

                      • @gromit: Have to agree. This is gunning for the pc gamer crowd who wants to go mobile, and I'm not sure there's a big enough market for that. People who already have switches/ipads are going to struggle to justify this, especially when it's more expensive than either of them.

                      • @gromit: I did, literally half is Nintendo, the rest is indie. Send me the list you are looking at.

                          • -1

@gromit: Well to be fair, Minecraft and Among us have 5 million between them. Then non Nintendo games that have been ported, Octopath Traveler, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Monster Hunter Rise, Astral Chain, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, Enter the Gungeon, Fitness Boxing, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!, Thief Simulator.

Glad to see that you read the list you sent me haha.

                            • @onlinepred: You don't seem to understand what indie is if you think most of those are indie

                              • -1

@gromit: Did you read my comment? Ugh I’m out.

                                • @onlinepred: Sorry badly worded on my part. top 20 has 1 indie. many of the other so called 3rd party you listed were fully funded by Nintendo to create the games or in cases like Retro studios, Monolith are acrtually Nintendo subsideries.

  • Saw this the other day and personally I thought it sounded like Steam Duck.

  • People saying it's a Switch killer aren't being realistic, most people who play the switch in handheld mode are kids or playing for Nintendo titles, I don't think anyone buys a Switch for indi titles and like it or not the main playerbase of the Switch are happy with the Switch, it's the vocal minority that are wanting a 'switch pro'.

Personally I don't see the point, if anything my PC games I want to play on a bigger screen not a smaller one, but there will be some market for it, I just don't see it being as amazing as people think, people are bitching the switch isn't 4k, I'm surprised haven't seen the same complaints about this as it's only 720p as well and the hdd space will get eaten up very quick by steam games.

Each to their own though again I reckon will be a small market for it, but I just find it funny people saying it's a Switch killer.

    • Currently switch literally only has it's main Nintendo games, and the indie market (at severely reduced library). So if people are willing to pay that much for a device with a miniscule library of games, I'm sure people are willing to pay to be able to do all their PC gaming on the go, while having a mobile computer for media consumption for flights etc, but also for all future game streaming purposes.

      • 3985 isn't 'miniscule' imo, but compared to steam yeah sure.

But again portable is mainly used for kids, parents more likely to get a Switch for a kid for those Nintendo games as well.

Yes as I said there will be a small market for this, but it will be small, 2 hour battery life for a AAA game on a portable small screen just isn't good enough for something people claim to be a 'switch killer'.

        • Considering switch can barely play b games from 2 years ago, it's barely up to half a ps4, while this is ps4 grade. I will be using it a lot while on planes/loking after kid etc. Wanted a switch but all kids games, nothing really for adults. 2 hours for max possible graphics and AAA new games is fine for me, I'll prob be playing slightly older games, and some 2d games which are rated at 8 hours battery. Can't wait for diablo 4!!!!

          • @onlinepred: And as I said (twice, which you seem to be ignoring), it will have a small market, but it's not gonna kill the Switch.

But as you're cherry picking your argument here I'm talking to a brick wall, I'm glad it's something for you, but if you think it's a 'switch killer' you're only fooling yourself.

            • @Narull: I agree its no switch killer. Switch also had a tiny market on release. I just think it’s an epic gadget, and I fully support its openness, being able to play all Nintendo games on it too is a huge plus. Plus all streaming game services too. It’s definitely more of a future proof device. I was simply replying to your comments.

  • whats the battery life on one of these?

    • 4 hours of Portal 2 they said, so only around 2 hours of a newish game.

      • kinda sucks, so like a fps would be 2 hrs. not good enough tbh why not just buy a sub 1k gaming laptop that has better performance and can be used for more than gaming. fps (which is what i mostly play) cannot be played right with a joystick anyway.. maybe its good for like crush bandicoot or like assasins creed

        • What gaming laptop is under 800gms in a handheld?

  • +4

I'm a bit disappointed that Australia was snubbed in the pre-order. But judging by the fact that the international release has been sold out until halfway through next year I won't hold my breath.

  • Wondering if this thing will survive, it is pretty bulky and not sure it has a enough of a market to survive, especially at these premium price points.

  • As a big pc player I can only think of a handful of my 1200 steam library that I would want to play on thumb sticks. Three of which being dark souls entries, so I’m not sure it will even sell well to pre existing steam users. And this is coming from someone who bought a steam box.

  • +1

Valve has a history of abandoning their hardware products after a few years of minimal support. I'd hesitate heavily and wait for reviewers and idiots day one buyers to identify any issues and evaluate whether it's worth the cost.

I can see it being very advantageous for people with a mobile or light lifestyle that wants to play PC games, similar to how the switch was originally marketed.

    • This is the only one they are building in house though. They have complained many times about not being able to control existing hardware they did not make in house.

  • No mention of the ODROID-Go Super? I heard about it on the Linux Unplugged podcast (episode 405, for those wondering)

  • +1

Every time I try to game differently from computer, keyboard and mouse or controller, I regret it.

I should spend more time doing curls and wearing bigger glasses to appreciate the handheld market.

    • Meanwhile kids walk around with iPad pros that weight almost the same haha

      • If they already have iPad Pros then it might be a tough sell to buy another gaming machine.

        • Exactly, not really made for kids I guess, not like kids who have ipads as their gaming machine also want a gaming PC to play actual games.

  • Looks ugly, but depending on its emulating capabilities and perhaps I would consider buying one so I can play my backed up games

  • +4

I basically really want one, on a gadget level it is ridiculously appealing to me and I'd find a lot of uses for it, but it looks like a bare minimum 12 month wait to even get a sniff at one, by which time we will have Zen4 and RDNA3.. here's hoping they keep updating it so by the time I can actually get one, it'll be even better.

  • +3

it's just the best value for money for people who doesn't have a gaming pc set up. You simply cannot get anything remotely close on pc with that price. If I don't already have a gaming laptop, I'd be super interested :)

    • I'm not sure if you're referring to form factor or not but you can get a gaming PC for around the same price as the 512GB model.

$629US is about $900AU, you can get a RTX 3050 laptop.

  • +2

I just want milk that tastes like real milk

  • Am interested but not for that price.

    • Not really an issue anyway, I'll be shocked if Valve try to bring it to us here or even are competently manufacturing them to cover the US supply and demand. I'm a big Steam fan and I'd buy this but I honestly don't think it'll be worth the worry. It'll likely be $1000 plus here and available in 2-3 years. It's also 2 inches thick, wtf.

  • +1

It seems nuts to me that Microsoft hasn't jumped on this already and partnered with Valve to deliver native Gamepass on Steam.

I know the Steam Deck isn't locked to an OS, but I want to have my cake and eat it. I like the version of the Steam OS they're showing off on the Deck, and being able to play Gamepass games out of the box would be a very attractive proposition.

    • There's nothing in it for Microsoft, any steam/steam deck purchase is stealing a possible purchase of an xbox/a game from xbox game store.

  • partnered with Valve

Valve are trying their best to avoid Microsoft. Steam is anti-Game Pass. Steam OS is based on Linux.

  • All I can say is us Arch bros keep on winning. brb, fixing an aur package.

  • Damn this is a really long discussion thread on a product that's not coming to Australia
