AliExpress Australia Warehouse & GST on Items over $1000

I ordered a $1000+ item from Aliexpress today and discovered they only charge GST on sub-$1000 orders, so I didn't have to pay them the GST…

The item is being shipped from the Aussie warehouse with Aus-Post, I assume it wont be going through Customs?, so what happens about GST in cases like this?

Cheers.

UPDATE: I ended up not having to pay GST :D

  • You may get charged 10% GST + 5% customs charges payable before delivery. Based on my experience of purchasing item >$1000 from OS, with no GST charged at check out.

Since it's already in Australia, the GST is already included in the purchase price.

    • I hope that's the case, fingers crossed…

  • Yeah interesting. I wonder if it's actually coming from an Australian warehouse? Otherwise yeah GST and customs will be charged when it comes into the country.

    • Time will tell I guess… It's listed as: "Ships From: Australia", and it's "Delivered before Jul 29 or full refund", so I very much doubt they would risk shipping it from China with that 2 week delivery timeframe… Also, it comes as 2 shipments, the motor kit and the battery, each worth about $600 each…

For goods with a value over AUD1000, you will need to fill out an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges at the border.

Do you pay GST seperately when buying from Jb or TGG ? Its already included in price tag. Same case here.

    • JB & TGG collect the GST and list it on the invoice… AliExpress only collect GST on orders that are less than $1000, as per the ATO rules… It's assumed Customs will bail up anything worth $1000+ at the border…

      • Ya, but your order is coking from inside Australia. There won't be any GST for sure.

  • Under the Trade Practices Act, price quoted to general public must include GST https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/accc-warns-service-sec…. Based on your understanding, in this instance as the goods are being shipped from within Australia, the price is inclusive of GST, and it will not need to be collected separately collected on top.

  • Would that include Chinese companies though?

    • If it's being sent from their Australian Warehouse then you won't need to pay anything extra. Taxes would have already been paid for when they imported the items into the Country.
