Best Sofa/Couch for $1000

My partner and I are looking to move in to a new place in a month, and are looking at furnishing options.

It’s a rental house/unit (so not our forever home), around 90sqm. Given it’s our first move, we didn’t want to spend too much on furnishing as we don’t think it’s the right time to apply the “buy once cry once” rule. We are planning on buying a forever home in the near future (sometime within the next 2 years, largely dependent on where our jobs take us), and so we think we could potentially furnish it nicer/better if we needed/wanted.

At the moment, we have on the cards a koala queen sized sofa bed + ottoman that a friend is offering to sell to us for $1100 (RRP $1800, receipt and invoice included, they paid full price) that they bought new last year in March. They haven’t used it very much and were hoping to use it as a spare/for family to stay over. But thanks to Covid, their family weren’t able to visit much and thus they have not been able to utilise it as much as they would have liked.

We don’t know much about sofas, and are of the opinion that furniture can be a minefield with price, value, quality etc. So we’re throwing it out to the Ozb experts to share some tips:

  1. What’s a good value couch at $1000 (It does not have to be a sofa bed, our friend's just so happens to be one).
  2. Is the koala sofa bed any good? (This koala thing seems to be an ageing new trend)

Thanks team!

Modular design so pick your preferred layout.

I bought a 3 seater (non-sofa bed) and have guests sleep on it frequently. It’s very comfortable as a bed.

But there is also now a sofa bed option if that is preferable.

  • +1

    Gumtree

    • Agree. Go secondhand. I put up a couch on Facebook that originally cost thousands in perfect condition. Tried to get a few dollars for it, but no takers. Had to give it away for free to make way for the new couch. Far better than what you get for $1k in a store.

  • Have the friheten from ikea and really like it. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/friheten-corner-sofa-bed-with-s…

I don’t love the feel of the fabric, but can cope with it. The grey apparently pills so not recommended but haven’t had any pilling with the beige. It can be used as a bed, but to be honest we always have the extra bit out and use it as a leg rest, it’s great. Got mine in the ‘as is’ section for $500 and enjoy not having to be precious about it since we have a toddler and a dog.

    • It looks great. I am after one where I can vacuum at the bottom with a stick or robot vacuum - height of this doesn't seem to be enough for such access.

      • Yep, not enough clearance for that. Definitely not a robot vac. Maybe a Dyson stick, but can’t confirm as I don’t have one, our ergorapido does not fit underneath. We have tiles so I just push the whole lounge back and forth to clean underneath, harder on carpet, but potentially sliders could help.

  • I got a fabric sofa pair from Focus On about four years ago - reasonably priced and still going strong.

They don’t have the exact same couch I got anymore but there’s this 3 seater for $799 currently for example.

The other couch I was considering at the time was the Jazz 3 seater at Fantastic Furniture - currently $599 and you can pick from a range of fabrics. There’s also the 3 seater chaise for $899.

  • Just remember that the koala sofa bed goes on 20% sales quite often. Not prudent paying full price, dont pay for their mistake. I've bought the same sofa bed before and found that the cushion sags at the ends when an average sized adult sits at the sides.

I eventually ended up returning mine with their 120 day trial policy. to their credit, the ordering and return process was smooth and efficient.

  • if its short term why not just rent from one of the rental services that way you get anything you want and when you move if it was not a rent/byuy deal you have nothing huge to move
