UPS Purchase Recommendation for Family Use

I need a UPS for my two desktop computers and Wi-Fi router in case someone shuts the power from outside or the black out.

Any good suggestions?

  • The cyberpower ones as posted by Hybroid are good. Just need to figure out how much load your computers draw, and how long you want to run them for. You'll also need to backup your NBN FTTP or FTTC box if you want internet.

Line interactive UPS technology is a happy medium between the cheap and really expensive ones.

  • in case someone shuts the power from outside

Your local electricity distributor should have a lock you can buy for your switchboard to prevent people doing this without authorisation.

As to UPS I would look for a line interactive true sine wave UPS. Some PC power supplies can be a bit fussy with simulated sine wave. I have an Eaton 5SC1000 and quite happy with it.

    • I already have bought the meter lock and registered.
I think this is the best way to prevent someone opens your meter box from outside. As far as UPS concerned, Eaton has the best value for its power and price compared with APC around $300 mark. The padlock costs$130 though. Thanks!

  • I have the one Hybroid mentions CyberPower Value 2200V. I'm quite happy with it.
Also its on sale at the moment under this sale:

    Tesla Powerwall, whole house UPS.

  • +1

    Eaton for the win!

There is a lot more to choosing a UPS than just going to the shop and buying a box with UPS written on the outside.

You need to this about the power/load, time, port/outlet count… and so on.

In general terms, I prefer to go with Eaton as a default brand.

Cyberpower is not too bad at a lower level, APC is good but like for like I prefer Eaton, Socomec is a solid product usually, and Powershield is a lesser know Australian brand with a good product.
