In Sydney for a couple of days this weekend. What to do? Cheapo things to do?

I'm heading to Sydney on Sunday for a couple of days. My partner is at a conference leaving me to bum around by myself. Any cool things to see off the beaten track? Bargain things to do? I'm determined to get this SLR camera at Big W so may have to take a trip. I'll be based around Sydney Uni.

Cool. I'll take you around if I am not stuck in the house for this weekend :(

USyd would be quite close to CBD. China Town, Darling Harbour, Fish Market, etc. Pretty sure there are lots of things to do around there. Take bus 555 which takes you around CBD for free (see this old bargain).

As of BigW, unfortunately there isn't any BigW nearby in CBD, and the closest one being at Eastgardens 10km away…

  • That would be great, thanks for the offer.

555 looks like a good tourist route.

    Other ideas:
    Zoo
    La Perouse
    Probably walk around harbour

The 555 really takes you around the CBD only. The only 'touristy' points of interest along that route would be Chinatown, Hyde Park and Circular Quay. It also comes really sporadically, rarely the every 10 minutes that is advertised. Sometimes you'll see 3 buses pile up right after each other. It probably runs to "schedule" early in the day though. Don't use it if you have to be anywhere on time!

Hmm depends on what you're into - there are a couple of markets and farmer's markets around Sydney on the weekends.

Oh yes, and Tropfest is on one of the days this weekend in the Domain (??).

If you like Harry Potter - there is a Harry Potter exhibition with props from the movies in the Powerhouse Museum with hourly entry (the morning ones seem teh most popular for some reason!).

Some other stuff to do in Sydney: http://whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/ http://www.au.timeout.com/sydney/ - these are the sites I usually subscribe to/visit to learn of stuff to do on the weekends here.

and as for the Big W - do you have a car or are willing to catch the train? Call ahead first, but when I went looking for particular old Christmas stock that was out in almost every other store I checked in Sydney, I was told by a staff member at one of the Big W's that the Campsie store usually had the most sale stock left over of every store they tried to call up looking for sale stuff for customers. and when I went, she was definitely right - they had almost a whole shelf of stuff left over, as if the sale had just started (when it hadn't!). You could give it a shot - Campsie is about 25 minutes by train away from Central station I think (I could be a bit off). Depends on how much time you want to invest in getting one, but call up to see if it's available first! Eastgardens Big W is reasonably popular though. It might be a bit in the middle of nowhere but that Westfield that it is sitting in has most of the major retailers - Woolies, Coles, Target, Kmart, Myer, Big W, if I'm not mistaken.

      I hope that helps.

  • "Bondi cliff walk" while the missus is gone?

Borrow a "child" from a friend, get the $2.5 @ Family Fun day ticket on every Sunday for travel around Sydney e.g. Train + Ferry to Manly or all the way to NewCastle!

    • OMG I have always thought about doing that!! They should just make it $2.50 for everyone like in Melbourne, rather than for adults and children travelling together. Soo not fair!

  • Head to Manly to checkout the Australian Open of Surfing? Sunday is the finals for most of the events!

  • If you are still around Sunday arvo/evening the beat place to be is tropfest @ the domain. Take a poncho :D and its free

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Bondi cliff walk sounds good. I'll be arriving Sunday late afternoon so I'll probably miss all the cool events.

I don't have a car but don't mind going on an adventure in the train. If I do get the BigW camera then I'll spend the rest of the time taking pictures.

Go to Kings Cross = winning

  • if you want off-the-beaten track, head to foodie suburbs. So look for Cabramatta (vietnamese food), Campsie (Asian - Wide Range from Korean to Chinese), Eastwood (Cantonese (good HK BBQ) & Korean), Hurstville and Ashfield (Chinese), Auburn (and surrounding areas) for Middle Eastern, Leichhardt (Italian)… and there are many others but these are what i know of.

if you want close to the city, then Leichhardt (Inner West) for your Italian, Newtown for your thai and there is Glebe with a wide range of healthy options and alternative medicines but they have 2 great Mexican Restaurants, Flying Fajitas and Baja Cantina.

For food in the city, Mamak is still great (malaysian). I'm SURE there will be HEAPS of food choices. Oh and if you're looking for exotic ice-cream (exotic as in fruits not awkward flavours) such as durian, green tea etc. head to Passionflower located at Capitol Shopping Centre.

Capitol Shopping Centre also has a few computer shops that are familiar on Ozbargain such as OnlineComputer and OrangeIT. They also have a large array of toy vending machines and decent asian restaurants.

OH and go enjoy some delicious pies at Harrys Cafe de Wheels!

  • The nearest BigWs i can think of which is the most accessible by train is Macquarie centre (get off at Macquarie uni station)

As for spending the day, my tip is to get off at milsons point and walk across the bridge, then turn down circular quay, and around to the opera house. If you have more time, cut across the city then visit darling harbour.

    • also here is a huge list of things you can do in the next few days

      • Thanks Davo! Hmmm O-Week, I'll pretend to be a poor student for a couple of days. I may be there in time to see the Tropfest. Never been to one.

ozAzn, Wow seems like Asian food is the go to meal. I have a soft spot for Mexican, so may hit those up for dinner.

This would be a great trip to wear an official OzBargain T-shirt.

        • :) i'm pretty sure tropfest will be popular, so you might need to get there early. Or if you're really lazy, just buy the paper next sunday? and you get the dvd for free :P

and if you're at the harbour bridge- don't do the bridge climb - that is completely overpriced (>100). You can go up the pylons on either side (??) for 8 bucks or so.

  • Agree Yada. I did the pylon a few years ago. I think the bridge climb is more like 200. I imagine it's pretty cool but way overpriced. May as well go skydiving.

Well. Just an update. In Sydney now. Came in late afternoon, beautiful weather, on a very easy short flight. On ozAzn's recommendation (and urbanspoon) we tried out Flying Fajita Sista in Glebe. Sorry to say, I wasn't too impressed. It wasn't bad but it was in line with Taco Bill Tex Mex. I thought that strip in Glebe was nice so may head back there for another meal. The plan was to drop the lady back then head out for an explore but as we left the restaurant it began pissing down with rain and hasn't let up. Let's hope tommrow is a bit dryer. I'm keen on exploring some random suburbs so if there is stock of the camera, I will go and explore. Otherwise, it's off to the tourist bus.

    • Speaking of skydiving - skydiving over Wollongong beach is pretty awesome.

  • Top floor Shangri-la Hotel near Circular Quay after 5pm. Best free views of Sydney, Opera House and harbour.
