    It says out of stock?

    • +3

      Still some in store

      • -6

Yeah well you should have added that to the description.

Edit: Looks like you have added that to the description.

        • +3

          It was in the heading

      • When you first posted the deal it wasn't mentioned in either the heading nor the description.
You edited that in after I made the comment.

  • Looks like another good deal popped up in DSLR arena.

  • +1

Flickr images shot by this camera look good although we never know what post processing goes on.

    • You can always know if it has been processed in any way (but not what though) by clicking on the camera name in the image description.

  • Pity there seems to be none around in stock.

    • Depends where you are "around". Granted not massive stocks everywhere, but about 5 stores within 1/2 hour drive from "around here" have one in stock.

      • +1

        yeah deserves an anon neg…sheesh

  • Is this Body only? Boxed contents does not mention any lens included?

    • +1

PENTAX KAF2 which is 18-55mm as pictured

      • i think the canon 1100d is a better body… barely

but the pentax kit lens is better

        • +1

I believe the IS is in the Pentax camera body which makes the lenses cheaper.

        • +2

          Wrong on both counts.

The current Canon kit lens has superior resolving power. The K-x is a much better entry level body though. It has a proper grip, better dynamic range, faster continuous shooting and better high iso performance. Plus the already mentioned sensor shift stabilisation.

  • +1 for Pentax quality. Bought a K100D years ago and I still have it. Was the best value DSLR for its time and I still think they offer the best value DSLRs today.

    • I agree. Pentax is so underrated today vs. Nikon and Canon. Very good value and quality.

  • Bought KX about 2 years ago for 3 times that price (with Sigma 17-70mm lens though) and still love it. Great price for that kit if you can find it.

  • QV Vic has none or at least they couldn't find any but will look around the store.

    • Neil, was that you being served by the ratty looking guy? I was just about to ask, then a guy walked past who was already looking so I just got on board waiting for that.

      • Ha, No, I called up. Damn the power of OzBargain, looks like QV will be a scrach.

        • Ratty looking guy couldn't find it after hunting through the shelves, cabinets and out the back. He suggested that perhaps it was being repaired, or just missing.

  • QV: Out of stock :(
Friendly staff checked back of store for me though :)

    • Ha. You must have been the other person they mentioned who called. Did they say to check back later?

      • Yeah, I went in store and they looked everywhere :)
Said it might come in future but they really seemed to have no idea if it would.

  • +1

Just bought the last one in Parkmore BigW. Thanks.

    • +1

It comes with a 18-55mm lens.

      • -2

Is it "MADE IN CHINA" ???

        • +2

Lots of good quality things are made in China these days. So much manufacturing is done in the country that they have an advantage in that regard. Sure, a lot of crap gets made there as well, but just because its Made in China doesn't mean the quality is crap.

  • Forgive my noobness, but are Pentax bodies only compatible with Pentax lenses?

    • Pentax mount lenses yes - most Sigma/Tamron lenses are available in Pentax mount.

One of the advantages of going Pentax is the excellent range of old manual lenses.

    • Also you can mount other lens by using special adapters (Canon to Pentax or Nikon to Pentax or Sony to Pentax) you can find them on ebay for under $100 - Downside to using this is normally you will lose the auto focus and few other functions like aperture controls, but if you already have a good collection of other brand lenses then this option will allow you to use other lens on a Pentax body.
I have a good collection of Pentax lenses and I use them on my Sony NEX 5N with an adapter and it has produce some really good shots that I wouldnt have been able to achieve with Pentax due to its high ISO noise issues…

      • +2

I believe that isn't the case. Only mirrorless bodies can reliably make use of film/DSLR lenses designed for other cameras since they have a much shorter flange distance, which allows compatibility with the appropriate adapter.

        For that, there's this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63726

Regarding high ISO noise, I'll wager a guess you don't have the K-5 :)

        • +1

          K5 represent! :D

        • +2

It all comes down to flange focal distance - it is easy to mount an off-brand lens further from the sensor than the normal one - but not so easy to mount it closer.

M42, Olympus OM, Nikon would be possible with cheap adapters - Canon wouldn't.

One advantage of Canon is that it will take a fair range of other branded lenses through adapters. I played with this a bit, but ultimately just bought better Canon lenses…

I wrote a little article here a while back:
          http://www.digitalrev.com/article/cheap-thrills-getting-star…

        • Yes spot on :-( I'm still carrying a K20D

  • Auburn none and Bankstown none trying other stores in sydney.

Looks and feels like a really nice camera. I also bought a 1100d at the recent HN sale but I think this is a much better camera those new to DSLR like myself.

    • -2

Thanks for that. I'm guessing that we'll be able to buy either of those cameras from you on ebay soon.

  • +2

Please update the firmware if it is not the latest version. with firmware 1.0, The camera's voltmeter is more sensitive and will show low power with batteries even though there is adequate power to operate the camera.

  • None left in Werribee, Altona, or Parkmore. Apparently, people have been buying them up in the last couple of hours.

    • BigW stores have been ozbargained.

  • I quested around the Brisbane Northern Suburb area, and as stoopid85 said they're pretty much fresh out :(

If anyone knows of stores in the Brisbane area that still have stock, let me know

One left at Booval QLD when i bought one at 1400 hrs

    • Thanks, buddy

Thats a one hour drive from me. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

I really appreciate it, mate :)

For the record, I wouldn't burn you. but its understandable haha

This is truly a pilgrimage. if I drive, I have to go through the city, or I can take the train, its going to be at least an hour and a half to get there

This will be a story for the kids one day

  • Did you guys get any SD card in the camera? Mine got a 128MB inside. Maybe it was a store demo one, but for this price, OK for me.

    • Mine didn't have one inside. Oh well…

  • If anyone around Melbourne bought one and has regrets, I'll jump on board the on-sell!

  • Great Deal!!!! - Got the 2nd last one from Warringah Mall in Syd, and it is just in time for my Daughers B'Day who wanted a better cammera + I just checked at it works with my old lenses which at 35-105 and 75-300mm are a perfect match for the 18-55mm in the box! These old lenses are from a 20+yo Pentax SFXn …. now I wonder if (and how) I need to referbish these.

    • FYI - I found at that these digital cams use the APS sized sensor so for old lenses intended for 35mm film you need to multiply by 1.6 (eg my old lenses on this body are therefore: 56-168 and 120-480mm)

  • when comparing against other cameras, please be aware that this camera does not show visible auto focus points when using the view finder. Read the conclusion here for more info: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/KX/KXA.HTM

"The only potential downfall is the lack of an AF-point display overlay, … which means that no LEDs will light up in the viewfinder when you half-press the shutter button to focus. Its omission leaves me scratching my head, and threatens to color the tone of our review. Since almost every other camera on the market gives some kind of indication of what areas are in focus before I commit to a shot, this just feels like I'm using a broken camera. "

Love my k-x and will be ebaying it when the K-01 gets here. Here's a stitched pic I took last year (warning 4mb file). Used the kit lens too.

    • wow! how do u take a pic like that, did you need a tripod? it looks like it has fish eye lens? awesome pic!

      • +1

Nope. Plenty of light to be taken handheld with the 18-55mm. I think it was 3 pics stitched.

Here's one of Surfers Paradise from the Q1. This is another stitched pic of Brisbane. This is an unaltered pic of the Coloseum. Just a few more examples of what the k-x is capable of.

        • wow they are awesome pics mate, i'm guessing this is all on manual mode and you know your stuff! would you mind positing the setting details for the pictures? They weren't in the image details, any post processing?

        • Night/evening shots were done with an el-cheapo $30 tripod. ISO is locked at 100-200 usually. Exposure is just trial and error in manual mode. Shutter activation with $2 IR remote from eBay to prevent shake.

When walking around, I try to keep aperture priority at F8-F11. It seems to be the sweet spot for the 18-55 DA-L.

The only postprocessing I do is increasing colour saturation if necessary.

        • Cheers, thanks for the info Livert very helpful.

  • thanks for posting this!
managed to grab the 2nd last one from BigW kawana.
seemed like too good a deal to pass up.
girlfriend has a 3100d, and this seems as good going by snapsort…
looks like i have a new hobbie :D

  • Thanks for posting the bargain, just got myself one.
Btw the above photo by Livert looks so good. Can't wait to take photos myself.

  • Hyperdome QLD have 3 minus the one I'm buying 2 mins before close :P

  • Awesome picture Livert. I was over in Florence in November. Absolutely beautiful. I took a similar shot from Michaelangelo's Piazza on my point and shoot but doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours. Is that taken from the bell tower next to Brunelleschi's dome?

Does anyone know when Big W updates it's stock levels that show on the website? It's still the same as it was as yesterday.

    • I think they did this morning. Most stores around me are marked "out of stock". You should really ring around and find one today if you really wanna get one. Good luck

    • Yup. Taken from Giotto's tower. The Duomo climb was closed to the public that day as it was a Sunday so we were only left with the option of climbing the bell tower. No regrets as it's only a few metres shorter than the Duomo and I was rewarded with the pic. I was there in August and it was stinking hot (38 degrees when we landed in Rome).

  • Out of stock, thank you.

    • No, still available. Let's say "Limited Stock"

  • Got the last one from the Epping (VIC) store. It was strange though, I called from work and asked them to hold one (they said they had 2) and the wouldn't let me put it on hold because it was on clearance. I got home at 6:30, and called again, and this time I got a girl who put it on hold (last 1 available at that point).

Just luck of the draw I guess.

    • They should really allow people to pay for it over the phone (credit card) and pick up later, I've had similar experience with stores, some will put goods on hold and others wont.

  • HI all, those that did get one, were they black as per the BigW page or did BigW have different colours- just curious.
I wonder if JB or Harvey's would price match even though BigW's site says out of stock.

    • Mine was black. I doubt they would pricematch unless its in stock due to my past experiences, still worth a try as this camera is great. See if Big W website says low stock on the find in store and show them if they dont believe you. Might work

  • Not really out of stock. Find In Store button works a treat.
These stores may have one or two left.

  • Just snagged one in eastgardens. In NSW. Finally.

    • congrats!! You finally nailed one, Neil. :-)

      • Yep. Pretty happy. Been figuring out how it works but definitely need to study the manual a bit. The images seem to be coming out a bit dark on the viewfinder, so not sure if it's something I need to adjust in the settings. Will have to look at them on a computer to see.

  • Just wanted to say I'm really happy with this camera. Gets expensive though - already bought it another lens 55-300 from ebay (taiwan, so waiting for it to come, 1/2 -1/3 of the price ($232) that it sells for in australia (anywhere from $400 to $600) ), a camera bag from somewhere that was $43 but retails at $160, and also know the next lens I want too (1:1 macro tamron), but the cheapest one of those is about $400 and that's from Hong Kong. I think cameras are just money pits LOL!! Lots of research needed to make sure I'm buying the right thing and for the cheapest price. Really fun though. Book called Understanding Exposure seems to be the best one for explaining the theory behind how an slr works, need to figure that out before the manual becomes understandable (LOL). It's a fun and interesting journey though, so would really like to thank the original poster Blinda for alerting us to this great deal.

    • …but no +ve?

    • I'm guessing you bought the 55-300 DA L. It's cheaper due to the lack of quick-shift unlike the DA variant. Optics are the same though. I have one myself and the reach on full zoom is amazing. Don't forget to get lens hoods for your lenses too. You may also want to consider the DA 35mm F2.4 .
