Can You Tell Me if Hot Water System Replacement Is Covered under My Contents Insurance?

Live in an apartment and the closest thing i could find without calling the insurance company is this wording on the pdf.
Fuse is burning and lighting up on fire, looking to replace the unit as soon as possible.

    Did something break it?

    If no then you'll need to pay for a replacement. Insurance won't cover things that fail as a result of normal use.

    If its a strata complex this could be a strata issue depending on the wording of your agreement.

      It is not as a result of normal use, was only replaced 3.5 yr ago

          parts for the unit such as the wiring has only 12month warranty, i think the other part of it was the wiring to the electrical element inside the HWS and that part needs to be replaced. If someone has done this recently can you please give me an estimate of cost replacement, vs $750 for whole unit replacement

            @sagrules: If its $750 for the whole unit replacement i'd go for that given your excess and premiums you'd end up paying if going through the insurer.

                I have a feeling though unless you can prove something damaged the wiring you'll have to foot the bill for shotty workmanship

                  @Drakesy: Bullshit with the no claim bonus. I had to claim twice over 2 years ago (once for each year for 2 consecutive years), each claim was around $3000 and my premium stay pretty much the same during the last 3 years.

    No, HWS is a Fixture.
    Ask AAMI (or whoever your Insurer is).

    It depends on the cause of the failure and your insurance coverage. If your hot water system was damaged by a power surge, water leaks, and so on, and if you have the right cover, the insurance company may repair or replace the system. However, if it broke due to its age, it will not be covered.

      It did not break due to age, its only about 3.5 yr old with a 12yr warranty.
      I dont have accidental cover if thats what you are alluding too, and thats mostly for motor burnout

        If it is only 3.5 years into the 12 year warranty why don't you get it replaced/repaired by the supplier under warranty?

          because the wiring only have a 12month warranty and i think they will not do that, but ive contacted them via 24/7 hotline and still waiting for call back

            @sagrules: Surely your HWS would be expected to last longer than 3.5yrs so could it be covered under ACCC ‘reasonable service life’ warranty?

    If its the wires connected to the hot water system, then perhaps you do not need to replace it.

    I think a hot water system should have a warranty longer than 12 months however. You may be able to put forward the case that it is reasonably expected a hot water system should last longer than 3.5 years.

    get power board checked first, ausgrid will do it free. I found tis out recently when my hot water went cold. Hope you are in the ausgrid area

    A water element is usually $150 installed (Brisbane pricing) the wiring should also easy to do but might need to be done by a sparky, although the switchbox should be tripping if the element was pulling too much power ?

    Wiring is just not going to magicly fail after 12months.

    You seem like a tight arse so let's presume a normal storage hotwater system.

    It's just a giant resistor that heats up the water very little can go wrong with that, yea they corrode out, thermostat might stick on. But unlikely in this case.

    You have zero electrical knowledge by the sounds of it. If wiring is on fire after 3.5years you have a hot joint or some sort of break down due to insulation failure.

    But goodness knows whats really wrong here if we go by your description fuse is burning up and wiring is on fire. Then God damm turn the main switch off and get a lecky in.

    Beats the hell out of me how you can see a fuse burning up (holder Maybee)

    Next we will see a post about your Insurance refusing your house fire claim as you were clearly aware of the issue and thought Meh I'll get a lecky in sooner or later this electrical fire won't cause any more damage.
