Genuine Leather RM Williams Belt, Low Quality or Not?

I just received my Allington Outlet belts from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/635581 (only took nearly 3 weeks!!).

I ordered the 3 piece solid work belt and a drover belt.

I didn't realise but I think the work belt and the 3 piece solid hide belt are different. My work belt says 'genuine leather' while the drove belt says 'real cowhide' on the back of it. I've heard tales of genuine leather and how it is actually a low quality leather. Is this true?

Should I return the belts and wait for a 'real cowhide' one to go on sale?

  • Genuine leather is a catch-all term. It may mean it's crappy composite leather but not always.

    • R.M. Williams website says it's solid hide leather, I doubt it's cheap bonded leather.

      • That's the 3 piece solid hide belt. I didn't realise but the ones on the Allington Outlet (that I ordered anyway) was the 3 piece work belt.

I assume they are different products, and not just a naming issue.

Do you reckon it would be worth chasing it up with Allington in regards to why it's genuine leather and not solid hide or whatever?

EDIT: Okay, I just had a look at the tag on the belt and it says 1 1/4 inch 3 piece solid hide belt. So I guess Allignton for some reason is calling it something different. But the back of the belt says "32/440 RM WILLIAMS Made in Australia Genuine Leather G1".

        • They're the same belt, product code CB440 (it's in the URL for the RM Williams website listing)

          • @Cheaplikethebird: Should I be worried it's genuine leather then?

            • +1

@Pornboy69er: There's no rules around the use of the word genuine leather so all low quality bonded leathers advertise themselves as genuine leather, however this doesn't mean all leathers advertised as genuine leather are low quality bonded leather.

All of my RM belts have been solid hide and last forever

      Ditto my experience.

      • I'm gonna copy paste the same question I asked Hughesy.

Do you have one of their 3 piece solid hide belts?
The tag on mine says "CB440.41.32" and the back of the belt says genuine leather.

        • Had my 2 belts for quite a few years, so sorry can't tell you what was on the tag, no whether it was described as "3 piece solid hide ".

          • @DashCam AKA Rolts: Not an issue. I might wait to see if someone has a belt with them and can check before I send off an email, Thanks anyway

            • @Pornboy69er: Just had a look. Both of mine are marked, "real cowhide"and "436" which I presume is the model / style. I guess they could be labelled 3 piece; buckle, belt, loop - but not sure.

        • Same here. I am wearing one right now except 1 1/2 not 1/14 inch. All RMW belts are solid full grain leather, not composite. I know of their belts lasting 20 years or more with daily use, some of mine are coming on 10 years old.

          • @Cobber870: So their genuine leather isn't the same as fast fashion genuine leather?

            • @Pornboy69er: Can't comment on that as I don't have fast fashion leather.

If you are a Bunnings person the comparison I would make is full grain leather like RMW use is like hardwood timber, the composite stuff is more like chipboard or MDF.

              • @Cobber870: Makes sense. But also makes me wonder why my RMW belt is genuine leather. I think i might just keep it as xmas gifts to others. thanks for the help
