Australia Winning 2021 Tokyo Olympics Per Capita

I just did a quick back-of-head calculation and it's fairly obvious that we are leading/winning the 2021 Olympics tally on a Per Capita basis by a fair margin.

I really want to do work with some numbers here but don't really have time - so hoping someone will crunch the numbers and validate my hypothesis.

    Nah

    • Yeah nah

    • Not even close to nah. OP been smoking the pipe.

  • What numbers did you use? shows us the number sentence.

    • i learnt number sentence from my son in kindy
      1 + 1 = 2

    • Top 10 in the current tally.

  • After a 5 second look through the medal tally I'm going to guess Bermuda is in front of us by a fair way with 1 gold medal and a population of 62-64,000. NZ would also be beating us as well…

    Not quite.

San Marino is leading with 2 medals, or 1 medal per 16965 people.

Australia is 11th with 33 medals, or 1 medal per 772723 people.

Even if you did it by gold medals only, Australia is only 10th with its 14 gold, or 1 gold per 1.8 million people

Leading gold medals per capita is Bermuda with 1 gold for its population of 64000 people.

And yes, New Zealand is ahead of us on both counts being ranked 3rd and 2nd respectively.

We're definitely ahead in the top-10 tally (per capita) beating China, US, Japan, Taiwan (ROC), GB, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands.

    • Taiwan (ROC)

      Isn’t ROC Russia?

      • Yes (Russian Olympic Committee). Taiwan is "Chinese Taipei".

Just crushed the numbers and can confirm Australia has the most medals for Australasia

  • NZ

  • This is so 2000

Even so, athletics are just beginning and we don’t get many there. We’ll slip back down the ladder now.

Any way to get us to the top hey ;)

The USA media conveniently go by "medal count" rather than gold medals (like everybody else does) just so they are on top of the ladder.
That screenshot is from the New York Times, but you can find the same thing on other US sites

  • Does it matter?

Yes. I will support any positive activities. Competing at world stage is not easy and requires a lot sacrifice. They have my respect and I am damn proud that Australia can win the most medals per capita*

      • Personal achievement (for the athlete) - yep, cannot dispute that. Although most of the athletes also compete in other major competitions on a regular basis, against the majority of the same athletes.

For the country? I'm unsure how I could take any personal sense of pride or achievement in what others have done.
Maybe the government could send the whole population a certificate to acknowledge our support?

OP failed Mathletics. As an Aussie that gets you a tin can crushed and attached to an old shoelace for a medal.

  • How much does it cost per capita for each medal?

5 years ago each medal cost $11.4 million which works out to something like 50c for every person or roughly $1 for every tax paying worker.

Of the countries with a population of more than 10 million we're No. 1 per capita.
    😀

  • I thought this was a good opinion piece in the 9 newspapers on this subject:
