Priority Internet for Devices, Do I Need QoS?

When I get say two people streaming YouTube, online gaming ping becomes very bad. YouTube isn't affected. Without other users, ping is excellent. Current router on HFC is Huawei hg659. I think I need a router with QoS - but not sure on that. Does QoS control quality across wifi and wired connections, and is any QoS router appropriate?

I'd like to spend up to $150 to solve the issue. But if that amount doesn't cut it, would spend a little more if it will ensure the solution works.

I'd appreciate any suggestions how to proceed. Thanks 👍

You can get an Asus RT AX55 with adaptive QOS for around $150 when on special (usual price is $170-180).

    • Thanks, I'll have a look. I hadn't heard of adaptive QoS. I'm taking it adaptive QoS is better than traditional? From the quick description I read it sounds like it should do the job.

  • what sort of internet plan are you on?

Your saying when 3 people are using it its poo, but when 1 person is using it its fine ?

    • Cheapest iiNet. I have no issues with streaming to multiple devices simultaneously that isn't gaming. Ping is very fast without other users. But with two others streaming it's gone.

      • The cheapest iinet plan is only 12/1Mbps. Check in the iinet toolbox.

        • Yep that's it. But not convinced upgrading will solve it. I know others on much faster plans who get exactly the same issue with ping when they have multiple users on their network.

@iamherenow: 12/1 is very slow to have 2x concurrent youtubers and a gamer.

a 720p video on youtube requies at minimum 2.5Mbps, so >5 of your 12 is potentially already gone. Then you won't actually get 12, that's a maximum that usually involves the TCP/IP overhead packets, so drop it by another 10%: >5 of your 10.8 is used by Youtube streaming. If they're watching a 1080 video, its up to at least 4, so >8 of your 10.8 is used.

The upstream is potentially even more restrictive - there's not a lot of pipe there to be balanced between 3 people, so when demand goes up by one it'll impact the others using a best effort protocol.

You probably want a combination of a faster plan and a decent router

@Domingo: I'm thinking YouTube on phones may be what is keeping it working. I think I'll try a better router. Then if I still have problems, go for a faster plan. Thanks.

  • The HG659 should have QoS options depending on what firmware/ISP.

    • Ok. I looked everywhere for QoS in the router settings, but couldn't find it. I saw online saying it didn't have it. But if it's based on firmware, I'll keep looking. Thanks.

      • Iinet= tpg firmware = locked

        • Pity. Thanks.

          • @iamherenow: There is a hard reset button on them.
Depends how confident you are playing with firmware.

            • @randomusername2017: Don't think I'd be popular if I stuffed it up!

Sounds like the Asus above may do the job at an ok cost, so will probably go one of them.

            • @randomusername2017: Hard reset would just revert to the original locked firmware anyway so that wouldn't really help.
