Widescreen Monitor for Work Purpose

Looking for a wide screen monitor. Saw the LG 29 inch flat screen 75hz 5ms and Kogan 29 inch curved 100hz 5ms. Both cost $299. Will be using purely for work. Mainly excel, emails, word, content writing and bit of coding. Cannot have 2 screens due to space issues and would like to use two windows side by side at a time.

Never used a curved screen before but have read online that they are good for productivity.

Can stretch the budget upto $350 if its really worth it. Please suggest.

Thanks

  • I have the LG 29 inch flat screen 75hz, I believe mine is LG 29WK500.

It's a great screen, the ultra wide aspect is awesome. But to be honest I think it would be a bit small for work purposes (I used mine for gaming and movies).

You might find a curved screen is not the best experience with all that linear presentation common to those applications. It may irk you for awhile, before eventually your brain either gives in and turns curved lines into straight lines, or compels you to go back to a flat screen.

Just note that if you are using a wider than 27 inch screen and more than 1080p resolution, while it is great for excel and general productivity, your colleagues will hate you if you screen share a lot. This is because most people will be using a 24-27 inch screen or laptop screen and everything you screen share will look super squashed and very small. So if you need to screen share, i would recommend sharing your laptop screen while you do your work on the big screen.

I personally use the xiaomi 32 inch curve screen. It is extremely useful for doing financial modelling as you can see way more columns than usual. I find it is the minimum size if you need to look at two documents side by side. But you might have to raise the budget by $100 at least.

    • Yes, I do share my screen often with clients. Thanks for the tip! I am sure you have used a flat-screen before. Do you think there are pros of using a curved monitor?

Personally, I dont find there is much difference. Your eyes adjust after a couple of days you dont really notice the curve anymore. It probably will make a difference if you play FPS games as it is more "immersive". Work wise, size is the advantage, not the curve.

And also the curve only make sense when the screen is large enough. I feel minimum more than 30 inch. If it is curved for a small screen like 27inch you will feel you lose a bit of real estate as the side will look small. Just perception.

2x 1920 x 1080p (21-24 inch) side by side extended desktop and stretch the Excel across. Get more columns horizontally than Xiaomi. Only monitor only monitor with more horizontal space is 4K.

    • I agree you will get more columns but the bezels will be distracting as you wanna see your columns flow seamlessly. I have tried this in the office before, it just doesnt work for me.

      • I run 2x 21" FHD + laptop below it.

        I used to run 3x 22" FHD.

Work in finance. You just need to have strong mind trick. Don't let a bezel stop you.

  • I use dual 27" dell gaming monitors - perfect. A frequent deal on ozb.

    • Nice. I have a corner table so no space for 2 monitors.
