Info about VoIP

Hi All

After some info about getting a VoIP service. Currently I am with ABB using a free VoIP and thinking about jumping ship to Superloop. SL don't offer a VoIP service do they?
My wife (happy wife happy life) wants to keep a VoIP service so she can pester me when my mobile is flat. Other than that its hardly used and I don't need to keep the same number.
Been reading about getting a domestic VoIP service but just wanted to know I understand it all correctly. For her to call the VoIP from her mobile I will need a DID number correct? Looking at providers I am thinking of signing up with CrazyTel which will be $12/year + calls.
What about the hardware as I am using an Netgear Nighthawk D7000 which I do not think has a VoIP build in. If I was to buy something like Panasonic DECT Digital Cordless Phone KX-TGD324ALB and plug that into an Ethernet port on my router will that work? How hard is it to set the unit up? I imagine CrazyTel will give me a username and a password that I must program into my phone. Do I also have to setup my router with port forwarding or anything?
Currently I am using ABB cheap modem that has a VoIP port and a standard mobile handsets.

Thanks for any responses

Just get a Mynetfone voip account and then switch ISPs whenever you want without affecting your VOIP service.

    https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Plans/WhirlpoolS…

You can port your number too if you want to keep the same number.

    • Thanks. But what about CrazyTel? Arent they offering the same for $3 cheaper? Though $3 aint much gotta be a proper OzBargainer..
Actually I think mynetphone are cancelling the residential business. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3z4yryry

Actually I think mynetphone are cancelling the residential business.

Are they going to tell their customers? Or just turn it off?

        • I dont know. Perhaps you should ask Mynetphone this question.
but yer kinda said if you are a customer and only hearing about this through forum messages and not something official from mynetphone.

The netgear Nighthawk D7000 does not have a VOIP ATA installed, so a handset can't plug in (These plug into RJ-12 sockets not RJ-45(Ethernet).

People have tried using the Netcomm modem supplied by ABB to piggyback off of their new modems, but I don't think they were successful….

They do mention an available adapter tho…..

FWIW Forliet has nominated my exact equipment - Nighthawk D7000, $70 odd for the Cisco is painful. Aside from initial setup and one VOIP network failure all is well (as long as wife doesn't accidentally disconnect 240V from the Cisco) ABB was very helpful with fixes.

    • Yes I know my Nighthawk doesnt have a VoIP. It appears when looking at the manual the Panasonic Dect phone is not a VoIP phone. I believe you can buy VoIP phones that will plug into an Ethernet port and you can program them to work with a 3rd party VoIP account.
But yer maybe I will just go with the adapter though. But I was thinking of refreshing my phones if it wasn't much more.

I'm not with ABB, but I have the same setup (Netgear D7000 and Netcomm NF18ACV), and doing this successfully. I had a network cable from the LAN port on the D7000 to the WAN port of the Netcomm. In the D7000 there is a LAN option to block SIP traffic, make sure that's not enabled (I don't think it is by default but I imagine you'll have problems if you do).

I've since changed this a little bit because the D7000 is low on LAN ports so now I have everything plugged into an 8-port switch, but it's pretty much the same.

EDIT: As I'm using this purely as an ATA, I've disabled the wifi networks on the Netcomm. And once it's all hooked up I need to connect directly to it through a LAN cable to configure it (like today when I switched from my ISPs VOIP to another provider). I tried a bit of fiddling to make its admin page accessible from within the D7000's LAN, but it didn't work and this was much simpler. You could do this, or configure a special wifi AP just for access, but why add to wireless contention.

  • Cordless DECT handsets use older (telephone RJ11) connections. You will need to plug this into a VOIP ATA (Cisco SPA112 or simiular) for this to work

The alternative is get a VOIP handset (Cisco, Polycom, Yealink or simiular). Usually you'll find these in office environments without wireless/cordless abilities. The higher end models offer built in bluetooth functionality.

Currently have TPG nbn that is called forwarded to Siptalk DID. This simultaneously rings SPA112, Cisco and Polycom VOIP handsets. Elderly parents couldn't hear the cordless phones, so added a few more in more convenient places around the house.

Personally, having a VOIP ATA gives you more flexibility to run different phones. Ex lease/used VOIP handsets are available very cheaply

That's the way to go. Also you can use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grandstrea… on your mobile. Choose a provider that allows ring groups (collection of extensions) such as Siptalk or Crazy. Somebody rings your DID and all extensions in ring group ring whether they be on your Voip cordless or mobile, no matter where you are provided you have internet.

  • I am using Crazytel at home with a service I set up for work calls. I have a dedicated number and just pay for calls, no plans.

I created the account in May and deposited, with a $2 setup fee and $25 came to a total of $27. I still have $8 left, have not recharged yet.

Your Nighthawk does not have a VoIP port, so you cannot add an analog phone to it.

That Panasonic phone wont work, because it is an analog phone. Only the DECT part is Digital, which provides the cordless phones.

You can add an ATA such as this https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/networking/voip/87891-ht… which will allow you to plug in an analog phone.

Or you can buy an IP wireless phone such as https://www.thetelecomshop.com/au/grandstream-dp722-hd-mid-t…

You should not need any portfowarding as the voip devices connect to the crazytel servers for signalling.

If you have an old Android phone you can connect it to your wifi and use the crazytel app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.crazyte… It will turn it into a homephone.

    Hope that helps.
