Now that'd make it worthwhile, 'cause theSalvos get quite expensive!

  • I see the post is for Vic and Tas, but these are all Vic stores.
Can anyone confirm that no Tas stores are participating please?

    • Both Legana and Youngtown are in Launceston - not seeing any stores listed down Hobart way though…

  • I no longer trust Salvos.

I don't see how they can be best serving those in need, when they have stores in so many areas. The purchase/upkeep on all the stores must be…….

I was in Adelaide a few week back, and there are salvo stores in adjoining areas. Some where only a couple of KM's apart. One in Darlington, Marion, and Ascot Park within 10mins on each other.

It seems to me that they are spending their donation money buying up property, instead of helping those in need.

At some point the government will be forced in to looking at their business practices. Currently, they seem to be be run more like a for-profit business.

    • How do you know they are buying property rather than renting space (eg. http://express.whereilive.com.au/news/story/devastated-at-cl…)?
Also you'd have to sell the properties (reduce the number of stores) to make a profit on land sales - not run more stores.
Second hand stock takes up space and you have to display it all to sell it (not like having one coffee table on display and 50 in a warehouse).

      • Either way, 3 stores within 2-3 KM's of each other is too much.

I've seen the same in Perth.

If every store is profitable, there's nothing wrong with them opening more and more stores. It is not about being a profit business, but an alternative source of funding. I'm sure they rely a lot on direct donations, but what are they going to do if that dries up? Many charities these days will run op shops so the cash flow is more predictable. At the end of the day, if they have more funds, they can aid more people.

Also, if they are getting tons of donations in the form of items such as luxury items, these are not items that will directly aid disaster victims etc. Rather than going to the landfill, they might as well sell it themselves.
