Best Phone around $500? Motorola, Samsung or Something Else?

Hi, and apologies in advance for yet another “what phone should I get?” thread!

Long story short I have a Motorola G7 Plus that is starting to show its age. I’d like to get something new with a great screen, good camera and the best battery life possible. I don’t care about 5G so much but do like the simple android experience that Motorola gives!

So far, I’m looking at the Motorola G 5G Plus but this seems harder to find or the Samsung A52. I definitely want AU stock, not a grey import if possible!

Any help much appreciated!

  • Since Pixel 6 is coming out soon (this Spring), wouldn't Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a be on special soon?

  • I have a Moto G 5G and I love it. It's obviously not a power house but very well priced and got micro SD and 3.5mm!

  • I think you're on the right track with the options you've listed. I just went through a similar process and moved from a 4 year old Motorola G5 Plus to the Galaxy A52 two weeks ago (I paid $495 after cashback).

On my shortlist was (1) another Motorola (2) Galaxy A52 and (3) Pixel 4a. I ruled out the Motorola due to size, and the Pixel as it was single SIM - but you may be able to live with these things.

I've disabled most of the Samsung bloatware, and to be honest it's not too different to the stock android experience on the Motorola.

  • There are 2 versions of A52 (4G and 5G). Other than 5G connectivity, 5G version is faster than 4G! (But it is also $200 more!)

If you just want 4G (if you are on cheap prepaid plan, you only get 4G anyway), you can consider Moto G9 Plus @ OfficeWorks, it is on clearance for $247 (there are stocks but not many).

  • Thank you all so much for the advice and recommendations, it has really helped!
