Has Anyone Used Adapterhome.com? Scam?

I was looking for a charger for my Asus 120W AC Adapter Power Charger 19v PA-1121-28 and stumbled on this site.

I very quickly made a purchase, but it just didn't look right as the transaction went through (I paid with PayPal)

I'm really doubting the legitimacy of the site. Anyone have any experience?

If it is a scam, what should I do? Should I put a dispute in with PayPal this early or just wait for the ETA 8-9 days?

Thanks so much.

Edit 10/09/2021: The business sent initial tracking details on a Chinese based tracking site that suggested by mid-August it had been delivered. I didn't receive any indication of this via email or via 'missed delivery'. Made a claim through PayPal then was given Aramex tracking code that showed it was taken to the local collection point. Collected the package and it works. The sticker looks bad, so very likely a fake, but it did come. Definitely save the sorry next time and shop locally as advised below.

Website "trust" sites are garbage. They can only really check very basic things that don't prove anything. The age of a website should never be a sign of trust.

Reality in this case: OP will probably receive a product, but it's not going to be genuine.

Why? How do people even find sites like this? What is wrong with buying it locally, and having a warranty you can actually use?

Genuine power adapters for laptops (without insane pricing) are actually quite difficult to find. The market is flooded with cheap/fake adapters.

So you end up on these websites because you google around for "genuine" etc, and these sites are the only ones that show up promising results.

Note on that website they're all described as "original" - there's nothing from official manufacturers here - it's cheap stuff with fake labels on it, but it looks good and the price seems believable for a genuine product.

You're better off looking for stuff that doesn't pretend to be genuine, but that often requires extra knowledge, such as knowing the correct jack size. The good thing is that USB C is finally becoming pretty standard for charging, so you can just buy one of them instead in a lot of cases.

      • None of these are genuine though? They are generic crap, sent from China or HK, at the same price you could get a generic locally, with local warranty. It just doesn't compute.

That's what i'm saying - if you look in the Acer category, the chargers there have Acer logos on the label and ~$40 seems like a price you might pay for a genuine adapter - it looks real and most people are unaware that they're not. It's not helped by the fact that trying to actually buy an adapter from the actual manufacturer is virtually impossible - most of them don't even list them on their websites.

          • @jorf: Surely people can use their brains and realise that the website is not one that will be selling genuine adaptors? Some objects that are clickable don't even do anything. Oh well.

@brendanm: Most people are unaware that they can even use a generic adapter - they think that it's not the exact part number, it won't work. So it doesn't surprise me that people buy from these websites.

              • @jorf: Regarding the generic adapter question, is there a particular type that replaces that cable? I'm really inexperienced with this, so I really appreciate the guidance.

@Lemonzc: Nearly all laptops are 19V, so it's jack size and output wattage that matter. Wattage really only changes how fast it will charge (and there are limits, so more won't necessarily charge faster, depending on your device). So then it's a matter of working out the jack size, which can be difficult because every brand does something different and almost certainly it won't be listed anywhere, so you're down to Google to figure it out, or calipers if really want.

Best advice though is that if your device supports USB C charging, just get one of those instead (65W recommended - min is probably 45W for most devices, anything less probably won't work) - then you can buy something reputable (Anker, Comsol, Belkin etc) from almost anywhere that sells electronics.

                  • @jorf: I really appreciate the reply/advice. It's a 2014 model, so no USB C option unfortunately. Ill try and hunt down a generic cable (from a verifiable source).

I'll log this as a valuable lesson in not rushing! Fortunately I bought through PayPal.

Appreciate all the comments and constructive criticism! Means a lot.

                    Stay safe.

            • @brendanm: Remember Brendan that common sense is a punishment not a gift. Because you have to deal with all of those that don't have it.

    • It was literally the first option on Google and I just honestly bought without thinking. I'm not a professional re computer accessories, so I just stupidly didn't think heaps about it until the odd confirmation email came through.

Wouldn't even know where to start buying locally.

You'll get it, it will just be a normally generic adaptor, and will take weeks to arrive.

Wouldn't even know where to start buying locally.

        eBay
        Amazon
        JB hi-fi
        Hardly normal
Any of those computer repair shops in shopping centres
        Normal computer shop
        Officeworks

        • Well I'll certainly know for next time!

          • +1

@Lemonzc: You got some good advice above from hcca. Make sure the next laptop you buy has USB C as well, makes life easier.

            • @brendanm: Have definitely learnt my lesson. I'm definitely due a laptop upgrade - USB C all the way!

Really appreciate your speedy response and feedback.

              Look after yourself!

    • You're on a bargain website. Nobody here can seem to justify paying full price directly from the manufacturer.
