Amazon, Invoices & GST

I have posted about this before, but still appear to be none the wiser.

When ordering from Amazon, i find the experience of getting a tax invoice to be hit and miss.

So far, this appears to be with items purchased from Australian sellers and not from Amazon direct.

Sometimes a non tax invoice will be provided, today I have been informed from the seller to contact Amazon to get an invoice (as they are unable to provide), to then be told by Amazon that they cannot provide me with one, and to contact the seller again.

Should it be necessary to find out if an tax invoice will be supplied before making a purchase, and if so, how does one make contact with a seller before making a purchase?

In the same boat waiting for sellers to reply. Most of the time you can search their company name and locate their email and contact them that way.
I'm hoping that Amazon Business Account will soon come to Australia.

  • Yeah, I have found a way to contact them via Amazon (similar to how you would contact a seller on Ebay).

    What is Amazon business account?

I think there is something that is not fully legal (or maybe a grey area), when it comes to GST and certain sellers on Amazon.

I have previously purchased from multinational sellers based in Australia through Amazon Australia, to be told that a tax invoice cannot be supplied.

This would not happen with virtually any other reputable retailer or store, especially not a large one like Amazon.

Anyhow, I was told by an Australian seller (via Amazon Australia), this morning to contact Amazon to get them to issue the invoice. After 15 minutes on chat with Amazon, they said "If the item is sold by Amazon and fulfilled by Amazon AU, we are the seller of the items. And we cannot provide the order invoices".

I asked them to contact the seller to let them know that the information they provided was not correct - Amazon customer service said they cannot do that.

    • I find Amazon customer service getting from bad to worse. Many of their agents try to skirt around any issues and end the conversation quickly. I thought ebay CS was bad but Amazon is quickly catching up.

"Should it be necessary to find out if an tax invoice will be supplied before making a purchase,"
No. When I go through the process of having to request a tax invoice though, I put in extra feedback at the end (which goes to Amazon, not the seller) to tell them that it is a requirement for all sellers must provide a tax invoice in Australia for items over $82.50 (https://www.ato.gov.au/business/gst/tax-invoices/)

  • had the same problem with ebay, but generally everytime i have requested the sellers forward a tax invoice.

  • If the seller is based in Australia and not registered for GST then they would only be able to supply a normal invoice. Not a "tax invoice" that can only be used when GST is involved.
