Which Microsoft Office Deals Are Legitimate?

My parents just got a new laptop, and insist on wanting Microsoft Office, depite the advantages of a free, cloud based alternative like Google Docs/Sheets.

Given the movement to Office365, what's the best way to get a copy of Office? It looks like you can still buy Office 2019 for a standalone which means no annual fees (they won't be fussed about the lack of updates)

But, a quick google shopping search shows a wide variety of options varying from $7 to $120.

Just wondering if anyone has done this recently and has any advice for what a good, legitimate sweet spot is?

There is the free Microsoft Office online.

    • Is this good though? It means it's all cloud-based? Can I use offline? I'm tempted to make the switch. Don't want to pay a subscription just to use the Office suite, and also don't want to have to pay for every device I work on.

I'd want MS over google too..

  • Get them to look at this instead. https://www.libreoffice.org/

    • I am all for free and libre software, but you gotta be a masochist to let your boomer parents use Libre/OpenOffice. I learned multiple times from my mistakes - just get them proper non-subscription MS Office.

    • I have been a user since StarOffice 4.x days, and much prefer LibreOffice than MS Office. However the issue is mainly with compatibility when got sent MS Office files.

Those cheap Office 365 accounts people are selling you should avoid at all costs. Recent discussion here.

  • Try Google Docs and stuff, everything auto saves in the cloud and it’s free.

    • Not good if your not constantly connected

  • in terms of proper full legitimate copy, office 2019 is your best bet, home/student copy give you Word/Excel/Powerpoint, or you can get the Home/Business copy which come with those and Outlook

cheapest I found is here, which was cheaper than scorptec/umart etc.

One thing is a dead giveaway - if that seller is selling a key for Office Pro Plus (note the Plus) then everything they sell are dodgy licenses. Plus has never been available for retail sale and is only available to Volume Licensing customers.

I got a key through that deal and its works as promised. Going to get Win 10 Pro through them for a new PC soon.

  • has anyone bought this? does it work well? https://www.cheapkeyoffer.com/office-product-key-c-67/office…
