Email from Thornbury Records this morning:

In an effort to sell records we're discounting all vinyl by 20% until midnight tonight! (Friday). Free delivery for locals is still free, but might take a couple of days to get through them all. Hope you're all staying sane out there! Now is probably a pretty good time to pad out your record collection.

  • How well does vinyl travel when delivered? I am always worried it will break.

    • I've bought a bunch of Vinyl from Amazon USA and it's always come through okay, I would hope a store selling Vinyl has similar if not better packaging to protect it.

I've always received it in rigid cardboard postage sleeves, very solid, have received some from the UK with no problems.

    • I've purchased quite a few lately and some that have come from Amazon UK and US have been warped and come in inadequate packaging (Vinyl put straight into a paper bag…). The covers are creased and bent. I really think it depends on how it's packaged, but one was in a cardboard box and it looked as though someone had punched it over and over.

    • I've had 10 parcels or so come domestically and they've all been great. On occasion an international one has suffered a slight bend (about 3-5mm off flat) but nothing that wasn't easily corrected.

Meh. They barely have anything from any of my favourite bands. It's all weird stuff I've never heard of. And still not that cheap.

      • +5

I disagree. I think they have a decent selection of the best artists/albums at very good prices.

Some classics with Nick Cave, Can, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead etc.

They have an amazing selection of psych rock with King Gizzard, Ty Segall, Oh Sees etc.

Decent selection of post punk with Idles, King Krule etc.

Experimental rock/post rock with Swans, Lightning Bolt etc.

Surfjan Stevens, Mac Demarco, Phoebe Bridgers, The Mountain Goats

So much good music worth checking out if you haven't heard it before.

I got American Beauty (Grateful Dead) and a limited edition clear Just Another Diamond Day (Vashti Bunyan) definitely wasn't expecting them to have the latter, but I'm very happy they did.

LOL, stick to Jb Hifi for your 2DAY-FM playlists, and leave stock for us who love local aussie bands.

      • I'm into a lot of indie stuff too. I have quite a variety of genres too. I did a lot of searches, and almost nothing of it was on there.
Including australian music. I'm quite a fan of aussie music.

no Sticky Fingers, no Gang of Youths, no Eskimo Joe, no Lime Cordiale, no Jungle Giants, 1 spacey jane, but that's a ripoff, okay, they have a decently priced Methyl Ethel, no Ocean Alley, only 1 INXS, no Living End, only 1 powderfinger, no Jet, no Birds of Tokyo, no Silversun Pickups, no Icehouse, only 1 Tame Impala.

And that's only some of the aussie portion of my interests.

Triple M oldies isn't really the vibe around this (Thornbury) part of the world.

I assure you they stock a pretty decent collection of tunes at mostly excellent prices.

          • @tp0: Is it mostly newer or older stuff? And is it mostly indie focused? I assumed it was more of a general site, so it's also more aussie focused is it?

            • +1

@nuttapillar: By nature any record store selling new stock is only selling newer stuff and represses. As for the selection, it seems as aussie focused as any record store in Australia. Just a good general selection of music for people who are into music.

Not a massive amount of big, commercial names on there but there are other stores for that.

              • @tp0: Some of the bands I listed, are both australian, and recent. as in, either started recently, or are still releasing new music.

                • +3

@nuttapillar: I did see that. Between accused abusers (Sticky Fingers) and bland, radio friendly soft rock (Ocean Alley) I don't think those are the kinds of records you'll be finding in a small, Melbourne Independent record store.

As for not having more Tame Impala records I don't know. Maybe the back catalogue hasn't been repressed in a while. Happy Valley in Melbourne is where I usually go if I'm looking for some more popular stuff. They definitely have more of the bands you've mentioned.

                  • @tp0: I'm fairly new to vinyl, so I didn't realise different stores had specific focuses. I assumed they'd just sell any records.

                  • +1

@tp0: Anyway, I managed to find one thing I'll be buying - Future Weather by The War on Drugs. Not Australian though lol, but I love that band.

                  • @tp0: What's this about Sticky Fingers being abusers? If it's only an accusation, I wouldn't hold anything against them until its proven

        • +3

That's all pretty mainstream ordinary stuff. Hardly the fodder of a local indie store.

    • +2

There are 3215 products. And nothing you enjoy? Hahahaha.

  • +3

    Heaps of good records available!

I've never had issues with vinyl packaging for shipment from Record sellers.

However, the Postie put one package for 1 record under the door mat of my house as I was not around when it was delivered. I stepped on the door mat a few times before realising what was underneath… the record still appears to be OK though…

Great shop this run by terrific people. Get on this.

  • Nice!

Picked up the Jackie Shane compilation I've been eyeing off from Numero and the 50th Anniversary Trojan Story.

    Bargains with the discount.

  • Can you please add an "show in stock only" or "exclude out of stock" tick box so we can filter out what isn't in stock when browsing?

    • I don’t work for them so maybe send them an email.

      • sorry, it was late and I didn't really think about the fact that I was replying to you and not the company lol.
