nbn HFC outside Plant Doesn't Exist, Typical Time until Live?

I've never had NBN, nor had a phone line in my rental flat.

With lockdown and 4g connections getting unreliable considering biting the bullet on NBN.
I don't have an active landline, though do have a sad looking old copper cable that doesn't look like it will last the week.

Can anyone give any insight as to what happens next, and how long it would likely take to get NBN online?
Is it more reliable as of Aug 2021?

Cheers!

    NBN is a steaming turd.

    The answer is 5G.

      Yeah, that's the safe answer.

      The answer is 5G.

If you want COVID to go away and maybe GFC to disappear then 3G is the answer (if you believe it)

    • Maybe for poor people who don't have fibre to the home.

Call an ISP and ask them?
It depends on the technology being used in your area, if you own or rent, and stuff like that.

Is it more reliable as of Aug 2021?

More reliable than what and when?
We've had it for years and its rock solid. YMMV

      I'm renting.

NBN has been plagued by issues since inception.

So: more reliable than it was, since the beginning.

I've never had an issue at five different addresses using FTTN, FTTC, FTTP and HFC. All doing 100Mbps or more. YMMV.

You will need to get approval from your landlord if a lead in cable is required…well if you want to, some people don’t ask first.

First check what NBN technology is used at your address by entering your address on the NBN website.

If it is FTTN or FTTC, you will need to get a lead in cable installed as NBN won’t do this for you.

But if you already have a copper line there, there may be a pair that isn’t damaged and can be used.

Feel free to PM me and I can check what the back end NBN system says about your line.

The problems have primarily been political.

What happens next is you put in an order with your preferred ISP. Check your address to see what you can get. Does it say FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, FTTP, HFC?

    • +2

Best answer. Check what you have got. The sad copper cable might be FTTC.

    • Right, that shows "We are not currently taking connection orders for your premises. The ability to order at your location should recommence shortly".

But a search on exetel shows "A nbn™ service is available at your place.", but it says nothing about what 🤷‍♂️

There was HFC installation delays which have recently restarted in batches. Unfortunately there is not much you can do but wait.

      • pm me your address, i can look it up

      • You normally don't have a choice.
You get whatever is available at your address.
Its up to NBN to make the connection and provide the appropriate NBN modem.
Just make the application with Exetel and let them sort it out.
And if there is no HFC cable in your apartment then they will likely use the copper wire. (FTTC)
        Dont worry.
Maybe the terminal is a bit corroded but that's about it.
Thats easily cleaned up or replaced
Copper lasts for ever (almost) which is why its used in all wiring

    • Thanks.

      Premises technology HFC
      Premises service class 20
Premises service class description Planned to be serviced by HFC, outside plant does not exist
Premises service class reason No Land Access - e.g. due to water body
      Premises readiness Planned
Estimated ready for service date was 07 Feb 2020, currently unknown
      Rollout Region ID 2COO-67

Ok, so I don't? Why would Exetel be saying it's available?

      • +2

You're stuck on 4G until nbn sort their crap out. When HFC eventually gets installed you can get at least 100Mbps.

      • +1

        Doesn't look like it's available.

Presumably Exetel would be saying it is available because they can put an order in, just no idea when it would be able to be filled.

      • Why would Exetel be saying it's available?

Crazy idea, have you tried asking them?

  • +2

I would put in an order with an ISP that can hopefully push it along for you.

    • +1

Really can't see how that's likely.

      • Don’t do it as you are renting. Read my answer below and you will know why.

  • Is it possible to use another phone as a permanent hotspot ?

    • Can do. If the network speeds work for you.

  • I've been waiting for an NTD since Feb… still no update.
Moving house now due to it, can't have 4 people work from home constantly on shitty 4G

If you are renting and your unit is not NBN ready then don’t bother. It’s up to the Strata to organise NBN Co to have the cabling done to your building so you could sign up with an RSP. The landlord/Strata could have the unauthorised cabling(even when it was done by NBN Co) reverted to its original condition. I have been told a certain tenant within my building had to pay $3,000 once because of that! That’s why I had to wait 2 years for my Strata to get the cabling done to my building.
