How dare they only give away this specific model for free

      • +14

It is not exactly ”give away for free”. They receive $100 from NSW government for the voucher.

        • -7

          They?

e: well yeah, I mean the product is free for you, not for wacom.

      • Their motto is;
        "Live. Dare. Create."

    • +9

      I don't understand this mentality.

Something is already offered for free and you think "Is there more?"
And goes a head and waste their time with email with no consideration for their time cost.

      Entitled people disgusts me.

  • where did you get the voucher code from?

  • Sounds interesting. What software is it compatible with… I would assume it's a product to lock into a subscription base software.

[edit: Grabbed it for my niece in kinder so she doesn't destroy computers.]

    • +4

Just in case you didn't already figure it out, it's compatible with anything. It's basically just a mouse but with pressure sensitivity for drawing. No subscription or anything required :)

      • Great to know thanks.

    • -1

Most of the orderable products are tax deductable so I think this is the best solution until it's no longer offered outside of services i.e. classes.

    • +1

It'll work with most of the Adobe Creative Suite… which is free for NSW Gov school kids too.

      • How do you get it free?

      • Is there a criteria to get it "free"?

        • +1

Yes, be enrolled in a nsw gvt school.
          https://sites.google.com/education.nsw.gov.au/adobe-students

          Also gets free office 365

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Tried my niece who is in Kindergarden and access denied.

            • @Sheng: You'll need edu extension on your email.
              Example. [email protected]

              • @huntingforbargainz: Public school email provided via gmail. So it has [email protected] . As I believe I either need to request access from their teacher or kindergardener by default don't have access.

Also my alumni email doesn't work either for GO8

                • @Sheng:

                  So it has [email protected]

                  No, it's @education.nsw.gov.au

                  • @Lord Fart Bucket: Yeah just noticed that small detail. No accessible than now? I just tried using the extension "@det.nsw.edu.au" and it links to the DET portal and still no access. Seems like I do need to request access.

                    • @Sheng: @det.nsw.edu.au is for DoE staff.

                      • @Lord Fart Bucket: I still get directed to the DET portal when you login with name.surnameXX and password with either extensions I use. You are meant to be using @education.nsw.gov.au and when I finish detail from the redirected DET login I get met with this

                        • @Sheng: Yes, the DET portal is for both staff and schoolkids: http://portal.det.nsw.edu.au

In this portal, login should be firstname.surnameXX (no need for @education.nsw.gov.au) and the password provided. After login, for staff it goes to the staff portal, students get redirected to their own portal.

If the password doesn't work, contact the school.

                          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Login details work… but I get redirected to this page. If I go to onthehub… it is a discounted subscriptions and not free - which you said is for all NSW student. It is free so I need to contact her teacher to see if they can do something.

  • great find op

edit: before i hit order, anyone else got thoughts on how to use the creative vouchers?

  • +1

Just curious with lockdown and stuff does the Active Kids voucher allow you to get any products?

    • +1

Products: Not that I've seen. But you can definitely use it for many activities that are still running online during lockdown.
e.g. Scouts, online dance classes, Tennis lessons, etc.

      • Virtual tennis lessons? Provided by Sega?

    • yes

  • +3

Wish Victoria has something like this.

    • +10

Much too busy with 874th Monash freeway upgrade of the year

    • +9

No. You just get a decent premier that is willing to lockdown a city properly.

    • +3

The idea of those vouchers is to let kids explore something new, in hope they will like it. Unfortunately it seems it is used mostly it two ways:
      - To pay for lessons by those who already attend them (it is $100 of course, but not so big deal comparing to $2-3k spent per a year)
      - or on way overpriced stuff from dollar shops, sold by companies mentioned in this post, only because "it is free"
      Nothing to be jealous of…

  • +9

This is the first time OzB has ever shown me that having kids isn't just a needless expense with no incentives

    • +10

having kids pays off as soon as they get an .edu email address

      • +1

        this is peak ozbargain

  • Thank you op. Not knowing this I would’ve wasted the voucher this year again.

  • +1

Imagining the next generation of MS Paint diagrams in the forums 💥 🚗

  • +2

I’m guessing you need an actual kid to get this

  • Lend me your kid(s)

  • +1

Think deal will still be valid in 5 and half years if I get busy now?

  • Got one a couple of months ago using creative kids, a good distraction after home learning to do some online drawing for fun.

Wish NSW had a "clever kids" style voucher that would be coding/raspberry pi/robotics/engineering, or else invested in public schools instead of these vote bribes, then maybe the population would be smart enough not to be in lockdown by now!

    • +2

      They offer some of those

      What activities are included?

      Creative industries

      Architecture
      Coding
      Industrial design
      Game design
      Augmented/virtual reality
      Graphic design
      Fashion design
      Radio
      Robotics

You can filter and search providers https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/find-creative-kid…

    • +2

Wish NSW had a "clever kids" style voucher that would be coding/raspberry pi/robotics/engineering

Some STEM activities for your next creative kids voucher…

      • Thanks Lacerta.

She wants to make a console using a pi (don't know if an arduino would do that?), as she enjoyed the online coding and using something called scratch (?) to map and direct things like drone flights etc. I have no idea but I don't mind her tinkering with a pi Its just not currently on the CK vouchers. Usually its a $20 circuit board and some classes that would be free on youtube anyway.

        • Ardunino can't because it's just a simple board for learning electronics. Pi can be used as a console because it's actually a computer. But it will also need a SD card, case, gamepad(s), keyboard, mouse, HDMI cable and power supply (optional). With all the accessories included, it will cost close to $100 or over for the older 3B+ version.

  • Could you pls share the unlisted YouTube video ?

Great post and find by the way.

  • +1

I have one of these. A bit small, but it does the job very well.

    • I have an old asus tablet with wacom pen, is this going to be any better or will the kids be better off just using that?

      • I never had Asus tablet so I can't compare the two items for you, but the Wacom Intuos is pretty good and reliable. Additional information, without the lockdown the cost of it is about $85.

  • Any advantage of this over an OG iPad Pro 9.7 with Apple Pencil and Procreate?

    • +4

      Not really.

The only few pros of a graphics drawing would be texture and having a cursor.
And price if you didn't already have an iPad compatible with Apple Pencil. (Apple Pencil being the best stylus even if Wacom had made alternatives).
Availability of programs compatible (Linux, Windows, MacOS), I think this model is also compatible with Android, but Android is limited by it's apps.

      Cons:
There's a learning curve with these tablets due to the visuals not being in direct contact with where you draw, (can be learnt).

      PSA
People that do buy, please make sure you go in the driver settings after installing, in Pen Mapping check "force proportions", this makes sure that the active area is in the same ratio as your display. You can test by tracing around a bottle cap and if the output is an oval then the ratio is off.

Is it legit? Might be a scammer to collect personal information.

  • I have a medium. I have to say the software on this is crap and buggy. For a child I would go for a cheap brand like $25 and use the voucher for something actually useful like classes.

    • Software? Do you mean the drivers? Or are you using the included drawing software?
I ask because this tablet works with anything; paint tool sai, clip studio, photoshop, krita, blender, etc. I know they sometimes struggle with 1:1 mapping and sometimes have pressure issues but i think the latter is a windows only issue.

      • -1

The drivers losing settings, going crazy with ghost clicks, cursor jumps and things like that. It affects no brands as well but I was surprised when it also affected this premium brand. To search on YouTube on wacom issues

        • Yeah, the windows driver is incredibly bad. Funnily enough, Linux doesnt have this problem, the driver is way better and just works in my experience. Not sure about macos.

    • +3

I had similar issues with a different tablet so I just ended up using open source drivers instead.

  • +1

    Thanks. Claimed just then.

  • +1

    time to play osu lololol

  • Update: Got shipping details sent just now.

  • Just received mine! Great offer, thanks Wacom.

  • Free software is your choice of Corel Painter Essentials 6

Can't find that software on their website.

Software on offer is Corel Painter Essentials 8, and its a 90 day trial !

    https://imgur.com/a/iybuVDe

How is a free software limited by a 90 day trial ?

    • You have to claim it in the Wacom driver software iirc

  • can someone please confirm if the software is only a 90 day trial?

and how do we access the drawing class?

    • +1

If the software is only a trial (not sure, havent checked) you could use krita. Its free open source drawing software.

      • This looks good too. Thanks.

    • +1

From what I can see the software is 90 day trial, I thought it was full version too. Disappointed.

      The drawing class;

You should of got an email with Subject "You Wacom Creative Kids Resources await"
Links to unlisted youtube video (30 min), the video is for Painter Essentials. No sure if I am suppose to give out the link, only <600 views.

Just download the trial version to try before committing. 16 day trial, can save the images.

While at it try Clip Art Paint trial, that looks okay too but seems to have a simular license deal, both seems to be "online sign on to use" software which sucks. Cannot save the file.

I just found this software MediBang Paint., I am about to install it. Looks good for Manga and it is free too (I think). There is one called Jump Paint on the same site.

Edit: I just installed MediBang Paint and Jump Paint, both look good. It does appear to be free, but it also has "cloud" options which could need a login which I would think would be free, maybe it has resources that is not free. But the paint part so far looks as good, for drawing it looks easier to use that the other two mentioned.
Edit2: Works better if you have a login, I just logged in with my Google account.

The pen tablet is pretty cool too. I am sure my kids would like it too :)

      https://medibangpaint.com/en/
      There are tutorials there too.

If you are into cartoon and manga drawing, this is really nice.

      • Edit3:
The software is free, additional materials can be free or purchased and it appears you maybe able sell materials too.

    • see my post a above

  • thanks legends, great offer! cheers

  • got mine a few weeks ago and its great!

  • Think I'll owe my sister after this one…

  • Thanks op. Ended up ordering the Intuos S before voucher expires.

  • Thanks op. Got 2 for my kids.
