Gaming/Work Compact Laptop - Budget $2500

Hi all,

I'm new to this community and I'm looking to buy a new laptop.

I have an edu email account (as far as I have understood there are some discounts?) because I'm a part-time student. I also work full time and I need something compact, that can run Revit/Autocad 3D and possibly with decent battery life.

My budget is around $2000/$2500.

Thanks

What sort of gaming? Will 15" be enough?

    • I would prefer 14" if possible. I would use the laptop screen only on mobility, otherwise I would use a proper external one

    • That's on my radar, but if I can find something lighter (even if it's not so powerful) it would be better

    • In the end I went for this option!!

  • Urgent enough to pay RRP or can you wait for the next bargain?

I can wait a couple of weeks for a bargain, yes

  • Revit/Autocad 3D

How complex are your models? Why is your employer not supplying you with a fit for purpose computer?

It is extremely weird for a full time employee to be providing an essential tool.

    • My employer supply me with a proper PC, but I prefer to use mine when on mobility, if I can. The Autodesk licensing system allow me to do so, so I can avoid to bring with me my massive PC when I'm around (but this doesn't happen often). The models are pretty complex, that's why I need a decent CPU with good single core performance (Autocad and Revit doesn't do multithreading well AFAIK) and possibly a discrete graphic card

      • I think you are right. 100% single thread performance is the way to go with those two programs. I would personally go for 32GB ram.

I am surprised your boss will let you access their drawings with a private machine.

Most laptops are on back order. I have found current gen Lenovo's have a bug which make them as slow as a 10 year old PC with a hdd (I haven't seen an issue with older Lenovo's). Excluding Lenovo, I suggest buying what is in stock.

  • Hey, would have DM'd the below, u but you've turned DMs off?

If you want to save ~1k, I'm selling a new Dell 7501 with 16gb RAM, 512gb NVme and an 4gb GTX 1650 TI (if u google most have only GTX 1650). Full specs at bottom.

This is a new warranty replacement (for a dodgy Inspiron 7590 - a model I do not recommend), with ~10mths Aus warranty remaining - both extendable and transferable.

After the replacement I actually decided on getting the Lenovo Legion 5 - primarily for video editing, I was planning for a desktop, but GPU shortages made the RTX 3060 L5 a better buy.
Yet, you wont get something with specs similar to L5 in a lighter, or smaller, form factor, which is what makes the 7501 a great bang for buck choice.
The 7501 actually has one of the better designs for something this size, and they've really improved on the (myriad fail) Inspiron 7590, and given the 7501 size it's quite impressive, with much improved thermals (outlet under screen is inspired, screen raises laptop off surface) and a swish looking, more solid, magnesium body.

Here's a good rundown on this particular model, seems this particular config was sold mainly in India: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNOXRdSrONk (tip: it's English, yet at ~1.5x speed it's easier to understand, for me anyway :-P).

    Inspiron 15 7000 Series - 7501
    10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-10300H (8MB Cache, up to 4.5 GHz, 4 cores) - H series, 4.5ghz, better than most i7's
    16GB ram - additional 8gb added
512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD - can add another if u want
    15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-glare LED Backlight Non-touch Wide Viewing Angle 100%sRGB 8bit - much better panel than the 7590's
    NVIDIA® GeForce GTX® 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6 - have tested games and edited, it's a solid portable performer.
3-Cell Battery, 56WHr - very easy to upgrade to 97wh battery, few screws and yr done.

    • No, I haven't touch the DMs, not sure how to activate them though. I'm on a phone at the moment, so I may miss the option. I'll recheck on monday

      • DM me if you're interested 🙃.

        • Not interested, thanks

  • In the end, I've decided to compromise and go for the "full power" option, so I've grabbed the Lenovo deal of the Legion 5 Pro, AMD Ryzen 5800H + Geforce RTX 3070 140W, for 2480$. A sacrifice in portability, but I've read so many good reviews about this laptop, and I don't change computers often, that eventually, it got me.
