Is Origin Energy Any Good?

Thinking about moving my gas and electricity to Origin Energy - they seem to be quite a lot cheaper than ActewAGL which is who I'm with now.

Anyone with them and can share their experience so far with them?

What “experience” do you need from your electricity provider?

To me it’s all about pricing. There is nothing else to it.

Personally I use Reamped Energy. Pricing is very competitive. Use can get referral credit also from Ozbargain.

  • Was with Origin for years at old place, never had a problem with billing or supply.

    YMMV

  • Checked my Red Energy rate against Reamped Solar and Red is still 9% cheaper. I live in Sydney.

    • Just rechecked to the other ReAmped plans and the Advance plan is much cheaper than Red for me if I forgo the higher solar feed-in tariff.

  • I'm with Origin and had been for years, then I swapped and had issues with incorrect billing, spasmodic bills, so annoying I switched back to Origin. They send reminders to pay your bill, send a text to tell you they've sent the bill, send emails when they used estimated instead of actual readings, they send reminders when your contract is coming up and your discounts will stop so you know when to re-negotiate your contract. I think they are awesome.

  • I’ve been with Origin Energy for electricity for a couple of years (on two different occasions), and they are fine.

I only have two complaints about them:

    • I had a problem one time where a direct debit was not processed on the scheduled debit date, and then my bill was marked as overdue. It turned out the reason was that the amount due was below $1, and $1 is the minimum amount that can be debited through scheduled direct debits. All it took was a call with Origin Energy and they sorted that out in 15 minutes.

    • The biggest problem I’ve had with Origin Energy is that two different sales reps in the last two years promised over the phone that I would get a sign-up bonus, but the sign-up bonus did not show up on the first bill as promised. I eventually got it sorted out on both occasions after a number of phone calls and emails, but it required a bit of faffing around to get the promised bonuses.

My suggestion is that you initiate a transfer request by signing up to a new energy provider (e.g. Origin Energy), then when you get the call from ActewAGL to confirm whether you want to transfer over a new provider, see whether they are offer you some incentives (e.g. credit on the next bill, a lower usage or supply charge). Plus, if you go back to Origin Energy and say that you got a better deal from ActewAGL and are threatening to cancel the request, Origin Energy will probably sweeten the deal to get you to not cancel the transfer request! The joys of competition…

  • They're solid. No problems for a few years here.

  • They're not the cheapest, but I've always found them to be reliable and decent. If you want an analogy - they're like the Coles/Woolies of energy retailers.

  • Was with Origin, moved to Reamped. Cheaper in pricing.

Not sure about their quality control…

I rarely get the full 240V that I pay for…
